coachbeginshis47thyearspendinghisdaysdoingtheworkhesodearlyloves,Jonesisatoneofthehighestpointsinhisnearlyhalfacenturyofpreseasonmindsets.Thatdoesn’tcomeasasurpriseas
Jonesisblessedwiththereturnofnearly80returningplayers,includingadefenseinwhichalloflastyear’sstartersandreservesareback,agroupofseniorswhoisprovidingsomeremarkableleadership,andoneofthemosttalentedgroupoffirst-yearplayers.Andaddingeven

playedatthesefieldsformorethan100years.TheareastartedoutasaTextileLeaguebaseballfieldfortheRomeHilltoppers.Thegameofbaseballwasapassionamongmillworkerswhocouldmakemoremoneyplayingbaseballthanmanyworkerswhohadprofessionaljobsinthecity.Ownersunderstoodthe
gamealsoofferedparticipantspreparationforworkingatthemill.Baseballprovidedanat-mospheretoteachrespectfor
authority.Ittaughtself-con-trol,disciplineandincreasedemployeemorale.Italsoprovidedaplaceforpeopletosocializeafterwork.OnSeptember21,1925,the
parkwasrenamedfromHam-iltonFieldtoBarronStadium.ThiswastohonorWilliamF.Barronforhiscontributionto-wardsacquiringtheproperty.WilliamBarron,whose
fatherF.S.BarronfirstbottledanddistributedCoca-ColainRomein1901,wasdedicatedcompletelytotheprogressoftheregion.Between1928and1929,
thefieldwaschangedfromabaseballtoafootballpark.Thecurrentstadiumwas
completedin1967withmanyupgradescomingoverthefol-
lowingyears.BarronStadiumwasthefirst
toreceiveareslitesurface,anall-weatherrubberasphaltsurfacingforrunningtracksandothersportsareas.ItisconsideredtobeoneofthebesttrackvenuesintheSouth.OnMarch30,2001,Lee
MowryPressBoxwascomplet-ed.LeeMowry,abroadcasterwhospent40yearscoveringsportsinGreaterRome,wasaMarinewhofoughtinIwoJima.BarronStadiumunderwent
amulti-milliondollarrenova-tionintheSummerof2010,aprojectthatincludedthein-stallationofastate-of-the-artsyntheticturfsurface,renova-tionstothelockerroomandshowerfacilities,increased
seatingcapacityandtheinstallationofastate-of-the-art,BeynonSportsSurfaces,eight-lanetrackthatallowedShortertohosttrackmeetsforthefirsttimeinthehistoryofitsprogramin2012.Sincetherenovations,Short-
ertrackhashostednumerousevents;including,theRome/ShorterRelays,PeachBeltConferenceChamionship,andSouthernStatesAthleticCon-ferenceChampionship.In2013,theNationalChris-
tianCollegeAthleticAssocia-tionannouncedthatBarronwouldbethesiteoftheNCCAAVictoryBowlfootballgameandtheNCCAANationalOutdoorTrackandFieldCham-pionshipsfortthenextthreeyears.Thestadiumalsoincludes
anewly-designedpressbox,lockerroomfacilitiesfortwoteams,concessionareasonboththehomeandvisitorsides,sidecoachingboxesandtrainingrooms.

The mother who saved footballDuringtheearlyyearsoffootball,thedeathofRomenativeRichardVonAlbadeGammonduringagamebetweentheUniversityofGeorgiaandtheUniversityofVirginiain1897nearlyendedthesportinthestateafterapublicoutcrydenouncingfootballasbeingtooviolent.VonGammonenrolledatGeorgiain1896andplayedontheuniversity’sfourthteamunderthelegendarycoachGlenn“Pop”Warner,leadingtheteamtoanunbeatenrecordasaquarterback.Thenextyear,undercoachCharlesMcCarthy,inGeorgia’sthirdgameoftheseasononOct.30againstVirginiainAtlanta,Gammonwentinforatackleandafterthepileunscrambled,remainedmotionlessonthefield.
ThenextmorningatGradyHospitalinAtlanta,Gammondiedduetoasevereconcussion.Withindays,whilemanymournedhisloss,othersroseuptocallforabanonfootballinGeorgia.TheuniversitycanceledtheremainderoftheplayingseasonasabillwasrushedthroughtheGeneralAssemblytooutlawfootball.ThebillpassedandcamebeforeGov.WilliamAtkinsontobesignedintolaw.Atkinsonhadbeenaspectatoratthefatalgame.Similarbillsbanningthegamealsobegantosurfaceinotherstates.AtkinsonwasstillstrugglingwiththedecisionbeforehimwhenhereceivedalettersentbyRosalindBurnsGammon,themotherofVonGammon,tolocalrepresentatives.Partofherletterreads:‘’ ... It would be inexpressibly sad to have the cause he held so dear injured by his sacrifice. Grant me the right to request that my boy’s death should
not be used to defeat the most cherished object of his life.’’Atkinsonchosenottosignthebillintolaw,and
footballlivedoninGeorgia.Intheearly1900s,inthewakeofthedeathofVonGammonandotherplayersacrossthecountry,leatherhelmetsandclotheswithmoreprotectivepaddingweremadeapartofthegameandtherulesforplaywerechangedtomaketheplayers’safetyahigherpriority.
