or the fifth straightyear, the Most ValuablePlayer Award in both theboys and girls Shore

Basketball Coaches AssociationSenior All-Star Games will be named inhonor of the late Art Harmon, a fixture as a Shoreofficial for more than three decades.

Sponsoring the Art Harmon MVP Award at thisyear’s games will be Jersey Mike’s, whohave been consistent supporters of high schoolathletics in the Shore Conference.

This year’s games will be at 6 p.m.(girls) and 7:45 p.m. (boys) at WallTownship High School. Harmon passed away at 63 years old on Oct. 25, 2009,

after a long career in scholastic athletics. He was a 40-yearmember of the International Association of ApprovedBasketball Officials Shore Board 194, and also was amember of the Shore Soccer Officials Association for morethan 20 years. He also was a long-time secretary-treasurerof the Shore board of basketball officials even afterinjuries had prevented him from being able to officiategames.

“The game of basketball meant a lot to him, so anytimeanyone does anything to recognize him is tremendous,’’said Harmon’s son, Matt, who many Shore fans know for

his award-winning work as a broadcaster forMonmouth University and The Shore Sports

Network. “He hadn’t been reffing games for a longtime but he was still the secretary-treasurer of the

Shore board for a long time because he loved it.”

During his 36 years at Rumson-Fair Haven HighSchool, Harmon was a health and physical educationteacher who also served a stint as the school’s athleticdirector. He also was a coach in baseball, soccer, swimming and gymnastics. In the summer, he was a fixtureon the Jersey Shore as a lifeguard for more than 40 years.

“It’s been humbling in a way,’’ Matt Harmon

said. “We didn’t ask any of these people to dothese awards, so them coming to us makes iteven more special. We weren’t prodding peopleto do it. They just want to do it because theyknow what kind of man he was and howimportant he was to people.’’

Avaliant effort by St. Rose, aseesaw game that came downto the final minute on Monday

night, it was all a prelude to asimple, immutable fact: MarinaMabrey was not going to be deniedan NJSIAA Tournament ofChampions title. The Notre Dame-bound Manasquan senior capped a legendary high school

career by scoring the final 13 points of the game for the Warriors to finish with36 points along with 12 rebounds that powered a thrilling 59-55 victory overthe Purple Roses at Sun National Bank Center. In the final 20 seconds of thegame, the McDonald’s All-American and Gatorade New Jersey Player of theYear came up with a huge block on defense with herteam leading by two points and then iced the win witha pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining thatmade it a two-possession game.

That completed a 26-point second half for a playerwho finished with more than 2,500 career points andwon her second TOC title after being part of the 2012title team as a freshman that starred her older sister, current Notre Dame junior guard Michaela Mabrey.

“We accomplished our goal, so I don’t have to saywe tried our best, this and that,” Mabrey said. “We didit. We got where we wanted to get.

“My thought was that if we held her under 30, we’dbe OK, so we were off by six and we lost by four,” St.Rose coach Joe Whalen said.

Manasquan (29-4) defeated St. Rose (32-2) for thesecond time in three meetings this season and becamethe first girls public school program from the ShoreConference to win multiple TOC titles. The Warriorsalso became the only other girls public school programin state history to win more than one TOC title besidesShabazz, the team that beat them in last season’s finaland left them hungry to finish the job for their secondTOC title in program history.

“It’s amazing that we got this far, and I’m just excited how hard everyoneplayed,” said senior guard Courtney Hagaman, who had a crucial steal downthe stretch in the fourth quarter.

Mabrey was a driving force, declaring from the preseason that it was a TOCtitle or bust.

“I could put that much pressure on them because they could handle it,”Mabrey said.

“I think that obviously she had the expectation, and I don’t think it was justher,” Manasquan coach Lisa Kukoda said. “I think all of them, after losing inthis game last year, being in that we were up here talking, Shabazz waswatching us, I think that we kind of left last season with a little bit of a sourtaste in our mouth. I think everybody had that mentality, and she just reallypushed it out of everybody and was kind of the driving force behind the season.I think it raised everybody to the next level.”

Mabrey set the stage for her fourth-quarter heroics by ending the thirdquarter with a stepback 3-pointer at the buzzer that cut St. Rose’s lead to 42-40.

“I knew we needed something to get our momentum going,” she said. “Itold them that we’re going to finish this third quarter up, and we’re going toget there. We’re going to catch up to them, and then we’re going to put themaway.”

A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Stella Clark (7 points) tied the

game at 42 eight seconds into the fourth quarter, settingup a furious finish. A basket in the lane by Mabrey’syounger sister, freshman Dara Mabrey, helped theWarriors inch out to a 46-42 lead, but St. Rose seniorJess Louro, who concluded her own brilliant career with20 points and seven rebounds, buried a 3-pointer to bringit back to a one-point game.

Louro then made a steal and took it in for a lay-up togive St. Rose a 47-46 lead, which they maintained untilMabrey scored and was fouled to swing it back inManasquan’s favor at 50-49 with 3:17 to go. A 3-pointplay by Mabrey made it a two-possession game at 53-49,but once again, St. Rose was not going down without afight. Louro’s younger sister, sophomore Jen Louro, nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to a point as part of a14-point night on 5-for-6 shooting.

Manasquan responded with a pair of freethrows by Mabrey, but Jess Louro then hadthe crowd roaring when she splashed in a3-pointer from the top of the key to tie thegame at 55 with 1:20 remaining. TheWarriors quickly regrouped, executing theirensuing offensive set to get what proved tobe the game-winning lay-up by Mabrey offa dish by sophomore center Victoria Galvinon a backdoor cut with 50 seconds left inthe game.

“I think that there wasn’t that panic..andI think that’s why we were able to execute,”Kukoda said. “I think that’s that mental toughnessthat I was referring to. We were able to move on,next play and just run and execute what we wantedto.”

St. Rose had a chance to tie or take the lead, butMabrey would not let it happen. Purple Roses’senior guard Kat Phipps got separation on herdefender on a screen by Marsicano and got into thelane, but Mabrey came over on a rotation and stuckout her left arm to block her shot before corrallingthe loose ball. That led to a pair of free throws thatshe buried with 19 seconds to go that sealed thevictory. The block was a potentially risky play

because Phipps is automatic at the foul line, but Mabrey pulled it off.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it,” Mabrey said about the block. “I just saw,‘Oh I’m there, she’s about to shoot it, so my hand, I’m putting it up andhopefully I get it.”

“Luckily her instincts benefit us,” Kukoda said. “I don’t think there’s a lotof thought at times. A lot of times it’s instinct.”

After losing 69-60 to Manasquan in a Shore Conference Tournament finalthat the Warriors controlled most of the way, St. Rose came back with agameplan that sent the game down to the wire. Whalen took 6-foot freshmanElizabeth Marsicano and had her run the point at times and play on theperimeter in order to bring Galvan out of the paint to have to guard her, whichopened up driving lanes. Marsicano was outstanding on the big stage with 11points and five assists.

“We didn’t ask her, we told her,” Whalen joked about the adjustment. “Shedid a great job, and we knew she was capable of that.”

“We knew that they were going to do something,” Kukoda said. “It was justa matter of what it was going to be. It definitely threw us for a loop, and wehad to adjust. I think that we were able to, and when we D’ed it up the way thatwe wanted to and got the rotations that we needed, we got the deflections andthe steals.

“It definitely pulled Victoria out a little bit, out the paint where she’snormally comfortable. She’s not used to getting through screens – normallyshe’s helping on the screens. We definitely had to make the adjustment in the

game. I think we did a good job of it down the stretch when we needed to.”

St. Rose led 27-25 at the half thanks to nine points by Jen Louro and eightapiece by Jess Louro and Phipps. The Purple Roses held Manasquan to 11-for-32 shooting before the break, including 1-for-11 from 3-point range, withthe lone 3-pointer coming when Clark nailed one from long range with twoseconds left in the half.

The Warriors regrouped in the third quarter to keep it close, but St. Rosemaintained the lead throughout the period thanks to the play of Marsicano, who had seven points in the third. However, Manasquan stuck with it, as DaraMabrey helped hold St. Rose’s leading scorer, Phipps, scoreless in the secondhalf, and Marina Mabrey delivered one of the all-time closing fourth quartersin TOC final history to bring it home against a St. Rose team that has becomea fierce rival in recent seasons.

“It’s really dirty, it’s really nasty, it’s really emotional,” Mabrey said aboutplaying St. Rose. “It’s really the team that can stay mentally with it.”

Manasquan separated itself as one of only three Shore Conference teamsalong with St. John Vianney and Red Bank Catholic to win multiple TOC titles.Mabrey also put herself right in the discussion among the best players in ShoreConference history. After a TOC semifinal win over Franklin, she all butguaranteed a victory, and she backed it up on Monday night with one of thebest performances in a final since the TOC’s inception in 1989.

“We were going to back it up,” she said. “It was coming. I know the first halfit seemed like we were going to really not get there, but we got there. I kepttelling them, there’s 1:08 left, there’s 49 seconds left, there’s 49.8 seocnds left, and we’re going to stick with it, and we’re going to win this. I promise we’regoing to win this.”

It was another championshipseason of Shore Conferencebasketball, as the boys and girls

combined to win eight NJSIAAsectional titles and the girlsaccounted for three of the fourTournament of Championssemifinalists and both of the teamsin the TOC final. On the boys side, Christian Brothers Academy, Shore Regional

and Manasquan each won sectional championships, and Rumson-Fair Haven made history with a Shore Conference Tournament title.

The Colts took home the Non-Public South A title for the firsttime since 2009 by upsetting a St. Augustine team that only had oneloss entering the game and had not lost to a New Jersey opponentall season. Senior Jack Laffey exploded for a career-high 38 pointsand junior Pat Andree added 28 in a shooting performancefor the ages as the two combined to go 21-for-26 from thefield and 11-for-12 from 3-point range. The Colts then fellto Tournament of Champions finalist Pope John XXIII inthe Non-Public A final. During the regular season, Andreebecame the first junior in CBA history to reach 1,000 careerpoints since Colts’ all-time leading scorer Bob Roma in1974.

Shore Regional knocked off two-time defendingchampion Point Beach in Central Jersey Group I behind 28points from senior Dan Largey to capture its first NJSIAAsectional title since 1967. The Blue Devils then fell toeventual Group I champion and TOC semifinalist Paulsboroin a one-point loss in the Group I semifinals. Largey set thesingle-season school record for points and was one of two1,000-point scorers for Shore along with fellow seniorKevin Bloodgood.
