We asked our Facebook friends for their favorite charity, and the responses were overwhelming. One of the top choices was the Suncoast Hospice (thehospice.org).

“The Suncoast Hospice is one of the best in the entire nation,” Daniel Hodge of Gulfport says.. “Simply amazing people doing purposeful work in the most compassionate way possible. I can’t say enough good things about them.”

Michele Lambert D’Alessio, Seminole, a Hospice volunteer since 2008, agrees: “It has enriched my life in so many ways. I continue to have the opportuni-ty to be witness to angels receiving their wings along with sharing moments of life with those angels still among us.”

in your WorDS: tippinGWe asked our Facebook friends: When going to the local salon, what’s an appropriate amount to tip? Here are some of the responses:

Claudia Moon Zikuda: I think it depends on how good the operator is that’s working on you, & I DO think the tip makes a difference if it’s going to someone you always frequent.

Plumbing Harkness: 15% on a regular basis but more if I intend to return to that particular person in the future.

Ginger Rockey-Johnson: I always tip 30% for good service and downgrade from there to 15% for poor service.

Jackie Lynn Simpson: I googled it and found 15-20 for massage, and several other areas for tipping guidelines.

Susan Robertson: I was always told you didn’t tip the owner, if it was his shop and he was doing your hair, but I have always given 10-15%.

Cheryl Wolanin: The hair salon is where I go to get pampered and relax. Surely I want it to be a positive experience and a place where I feel confident about the results. Therefore, I ALWAYS tip my stylist at least 20% and if it is Christ-mas time, I also bring her a gift.Susan Orneck: If the owner of the salon is the stylist, I give a $10 tip for a cut and $15 for a color and cut, since usually they are the most expen-sive stylist. If I go to another stylist 20 percent.Join our chats: Facebook.com/LocalShops1com

our chaLLenGe

I n the newspapers and on the television news recently, there was talk of a University of

Florida survey that showed Florida’s consumer confidence index drop-ping.

What that means, they say, is that we’re not feeling confident in the economy, so we won’t be shopping much.

Here’s what we have to say: UGH. Enough of all the negative talk. Yes, the economy, right now, pretty much sucks. We don’t mean to trivialize the facts: Unemployment is at an all-time high, or close to it; home sales are picking up, but are still quite sluggish. But that doesn’t mean we have to just accept all gloom-and-doom and sit back, waiting for our economy to crumble even more.

We can choose to continue on a downward path, back into a reces-

sion; or we can choose to head toward a recov-ery by invest-ing in our local

busi-

nesses — investing back in our com-munities.

Many factors are out of our con-trol. But there is one thing most of us CAN do: Go shopping. Even if you have just a few dollars to spend. Here is the plan, a “pay-it-forward” sort of thing. Our challenge to you:1. Go to your favorite local, indepen-dent business and buy something for $10 (or $5 or $20 or $100). 2. Ask the business owner to promise to spend that money in the next 24 hours at another local, independent business.

The Greater Tampa Bay area has an estimated 4 million residents. If just half of us spends $10 each, that’s $20 million that will be circulating in our local economy. For this to work best, the money needs to be spent at an in-dependent shop. Think Dairy Inn or Stella’s Deli, not Five Guys; ArtPool Gallery or China Finders, not Pier One.

No, this won’t solve all our prob-lems. But it might be a quick confi-dence boost we seem to so desper-ately need.

WI ith an economic land- sscape dominated by neon corporate branding and

colossal mega chain-stores, St. Pe-tersburg’s Fourth Street is a breath of fresh air.

On this stretch of road about 8 miles long, small businesses not only survive but thrive. Maybe it’s the

sincerity of the people, the friendly “thank you, come again” punctuated by an authentic smile. Or it could be the diverse mix of independent busi-nesses, such as Three Birds tavern, a century-old farmhouse converted into a restaurant and pub. Whatever it is, it’s working. Visitors flock to Fourth Street because they know these busi-nesses know the importance of good, old-fashioned personal service.

Fourth Street Business Association, has seen Fourth Street transform from a “red light district” in the early 90s to the classy shopping and dining experience it is today. “We have seen a huge transition since the associa-tion’s establishment in August1994. The beautification project has been ongoing for many, many years,” says O’ Grady.

The results are hard to miss, with new sidewalks and landscap-ing throughout. “Having a business address on Fourth Street says a lot about the business,” O’ Grady says. “Fourth Street has a good reputa-tion. You won’t see run-down build-ings. It’s more of an upscale area.”

“We help each other,” O’Grady says. “It’s about being a giver in this community.”

One of these givers is Tanya Shar-key, whose studio, tanya Sharkey Photography, is on Fourth Street. To share her pride in the neighborhood she started a fan page on Facebook. Since its in-ception in November 2009, Friends of 4th Street St. Pete has grown to more than 1,000 members.

“Fourth Street is the corridor be-tween Tampa and St. Pete and we are surrounded by really great neigh-

borhoods,” Sharkey says. “A lot of new businesses have started taking off in the last couple of years.”

With the help of neighboring businesses, in April Sharkey hosted the second annual Fourth Street Dreams — a Taste of Fourth Street and raised $3,000 for the Children’s Dream Fund, an organization that fulfills dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Fourth Street has grown into a main thoroughfare for St. Petersburg and one that offers an eclectic shop-ping and dining stop. A sampling; nature of Art Gallery & Boutique, which represents more than 30 local artists with paintings, prints, pho-tography, jewelry, pottery and bou-tique items; Grand kitchen & Bath, Pinellas County’s largest showroom of Kraftmaid cabinetry, bath fixtures and decorative door hardware; and Bowled restaurant, voted top res-taurant for comfort food by the St. Petersburg Times.

With so many great places, Fourth Street becomes one neigh-borhood stroll that’s well worth the trip.

LocalShops1.com celebrated its second birthday Aug. 8 at the Safety Harbor Resort with the first-ever BFF and

business awards! BFF awards went to chiropractor Holly Fur-long and jewelry designer Linda evans. • Holly joined Lo-calShops1 this year and immediately jumped on board, getting to know and supporting other members. A few months ago Holly even helped write the cover story for our magazine. • We first met Linda last year, when she won the very first “Find the Lo-calShops1 Girl” contest. She told us she’d go on to win all future contests. Well, she didn’t win EVERY one, but she got plenty.
