The vision of The DownTown Westfield Corporation (DWC) is for Westfield to be a preferred destination where people want to live, work, and visit.

A New Jersey Main Street Community, DWC is dedicated to promoting Downtown Westfield as a preferred destina-

tion. DWC is committed to strengthening the downtown Special Improvement District as the center of community life.

This includes improving the District’s economic viability by supporting exist-ing businesses and encouraging the establishment of new enterprises and cultural activities that complement existing stores and services.

DWC will focus on making Downtown Westfield a safer, cleaner, and more attractive pedestrian environment, with adequate public parking in order to serve the needs of local residents and attract new shoppers and visitors from throughout the region. It is also the goal of DWC to preserve the rich architectural legacy of the downtown area.

DWC is both the management entity of the Special Improvement District as well as a nationally designated Main Street Community.

The four points of a designated Main Street community includes Design, Eco-nomic Development, Organization, and Promotions. Through their downtown revitalization efforts, Westfield was awarded the 2004 Great American Main Street Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Center and the 2010 American in Bloom awards.

Anne Weiner hAs some experience with creating the right look for her customers. The owner of Bern-stein’s has a degree in musical theater and used to be a professional singer.

“I know how to create the right look for someone; I know how to create a character — not only myself, but my whole staff,” she says. “We listen carefully to our customers. They may

come in and tell us they aren’t sure what they want, but we engage them, and they open up, and it turns out they do know what they want. Every woman, whether she’s a size 4 or 24, has a vision of what she wants.”

In business for more than 60 years, Bernstein’s carries everything, Weiner says, from lifestyle dressing such as jeans, tees, and jackets, to everyday accessories such as

scarves and belts, to custom-made eveningwear, which is what the store is known for.“That’s where we started,” says Weiner, who is the family’s third generation in the business. “We

carry everything for the ‘mother of’ — mother of the bride, mother of the groom, mother of the bar or bat mitzva.”

Weiner thoroughly enjoys the process of outfitting her customers. “We really, really love our cus-tomers. They come to us because we’re different.

They don’t come to us to find what you can find in a bridal shop or a department store. They come to us because we are about you, your needs, and your vision.”

The Bernstein’s look doesn’t end with their famous evening wear. In addition, they carry a fabulous array of casual clothes, suits, daytime dresses, and outerwear. Their accessories range from daytime handbags to funky jewelry to elegant evening pieces that are sure to dazzle.

And don’t forget to ask about “Final Fluff,” professional wedding dressers who make sure everyone looks perfect on their special day.

K9 RESORTS DAYCARE & Luxury Hotel (K9 Resorts) continues to see extraordinary growth and is pushing forward with its development plans, with a new location set to open within the next four months. A one-of-a-kind daycare and overnight boarding facility specif-

ically for dogs, brothers and founders Jason and Steven Parker, who also operate the brand’s first location,

have signed three agreements in 2012, allowing the franchise to open four to five new locations throughout its home turf of New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, on the heels of record-breaking

sales despite the recession.“When it comes to pet care, there truly isn’t anything

out there like K9 Resorts,” said Jason Parker. While New Jersey will continue to be the focus for initial expan-

sion, the brothers are offering franchise territories all the way from Boston to Northern Virginia, and have heard interest from perspective franchisees in each state within that range. With five new fran-chise agreements already signed and four more set to close before the year’s end, the Parkers are plan-ning on having a total of 20 locations by 2014.

Created in 2005 as the second pet business run by the brothers, K9 Resorts is the result of years of pet care experience. As the business expands, the brothers are looking for franchisees who love dogs, are comfortable being in front of the public, and have a passion for giving back to the community. With proven models and systems in place for success while also being the top-rated facility in New Jersey, there has never been a better time for the growth of the brand.

“Everyone we talk to about the opportunity loves the concept as much as they love their own dogs,” said Steven Parker.

As the industry’s gold standard service for pet owners eager to provide their dog with the finest boarding available, the facilities are equipped with top-of-the-line dog pampering products, including accommodations that range from private 9’ x 9’ luxury suites with premium beds to smaller, executive quarters. According to the Parkers, K9 Resorts boasts the largest cage-free accommodations in the state.

Born in Piraeus, Greece, owner George Vastardis brings a Limani sense of place, meaning “seaport” or “harbor” in Greek, to beautiful Westfield.

In every corner of Greece, Limani is where locals go early in the morning to select the freshest catches after the city’s fishing boats return to shore. In

our very own New Jersey Limani, you’ll enjoy the freshest seafood and delicious sal-ads tossed to order.

Our menu features black Angus steaks, rack of lamb, and many other mouth-watering dishes. At Limani, it’s all about the food, not to mention the

WiTh our one-year anniversary just a few weeks away, Gemmette Hair Studio would like to

thank the entire town of Westfield for its warm welcome to this beautiful area.

We have had the opportunity to meet and work with surrounding busi-

nesses as well as residents of the town and

we’ve loved every minute of it. We love

working closely with this community and

will continue to do so in the future.

We hope everyone has or will experience

our salon and our services. Since we’ve opened, we have

added a few services to our menu that we did not offer

upon opening. They include full body waxing and threading

as well as spray tanning. Threading, an ancient art in hair

removal developed in the Middle East, is known as a better

alternative to waxing because it will preserve your skin, keep-

ing the elasticity and collagen levels within your skin normal.

The only tools used to perform this service is thread and it

must be disposed of after each use making this service much

more clean than waxing. While waxing is still a great service,

threading is a chemical and electric free form of epilation that can even be used on clients that

are undergoing treatments for their skin such as Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide, Accutane, etc.

Call today to schedule your appointments. Be sure to check our website for our new fall/

winter business hours.

One Of the elements of b’nei mitzva is performing acts of kindness that “repair

the world.” At the end of many b’nei mitzva parties, guests receive a customized

fashion statement in the form of a “goody bag,” which can include a personal-

ized T-shirt, hoody, or sweatpants. Now, there’s a new, non-profit business in

Monmouth County that can take care of both the good deed and the fashionable

goody bag.

CPC Screen Printing, Inc., was formed about a year ago by

CPC Behavioral Healthcare, Inc., with initial support from

the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services. The

business employs behavioral health clients with psychiatric or

developmental disorders, including autism.

The shop’s manager, Nic Ritchie, adds, “We began by focusing on working

with local athletic leagues to produce team T-shirts, sweats, caps, and hoodies.

We’ll work with any customer to come up with a personalized, attractive design

that hits the mark!”

Each year CPC Behavioral Healthcare serves over 7,800 children, teens,

adults, and families living with autism, depression, other mental illnesses, sub-

stance abuse, or developmental disabilities that impact learning. Their counsel-

ing centers, special education schools, and small group homes in Monmouth

County give hope for recovery, and the opportunity to live happier, more pro-

ductive lives. A big part of that, as you might imagine, is meaningful employ-

ment at competitive wages.

The shop is located in Eatontown, near the Jersey Shore, and is very inter-

ested in working with congregations and their members who are interested in

creating items in goody bags for b’nei mitzva celebrations.

Call Ritchie at 732-440-4405 or visit cpcscreenprinting.com.

Drs. stanley anD scott Gersch, the father-and-son team of Gersch Orthodontics, have a 30-plus-year history of excellence treating children, teens, adults, and multiple generations of families.

They provide an enjoyable orthodontic experience in a fun, caring, modern, and comfort-able environment. Believing that early diagnosis and a non-extraction philosophy are essential,

they do serious work while always keeping visits light and fun with theme weeks, contests, and prize giveaways. They encourage patients and non-patients to visit them on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/GerschOrthodontics) and join their next contest!

Whether utilizing clear aligner therapy (Invisalign/Invisalign Teen), tra-ditional clear, or metal low-friction-self-ligating braces, or behind the teeth

(lingual) braces, they offer a wide range of cosmetic options and state-of-the-art treatments tailored to each patient’s unique needs — allowing patients to be

treated in less time, with fewer visits, and minimal discomfort. Both doctors are Invisalign and Invisalign-Teen ELITE Premier Providers, a distinction given to less than 1% of Invisalign-cer-tified doctors.

Dr. Scott Gersch, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, is noted for his research on the impact of orthodontics on a child’s psychological well-being. Dr. Stanley Gersch is past president of the NJ Association of Orthodontists and a nationally recognized Invisalign expert and Director of NYU’s Invisalign program. Both have hospital privileges, and teach, sharing their knowledge with dental students and residents.

Dr. Scott Gersch sums it up best: “Orthodontic treatment has a profound impact on a per-son’s life. Our greatest reward is seeing our patients’ confidence grow and their personalities blossom when we give them a new smile.”

Both repeatedly named “Top Orthodontists” in New Jersey Monthly by their dental col-leagues, and “Favorite Kids’ Docs” in New Jersey Family by parents in the community, Drs. Stanley and Scott Gersch are committed to creating beautiful smiles in a fun and energetic atmosphere.

With two locations in Westfield and Linden, scheduling is flexible, offering early morning, evening, and weekend hours. They provide convenient payment plans and accept most insur-ance.

Dr. Stanley Gersch concludes: “We invite patients to come in for their complimentary eval-uation and be a part of our family at Gersch Orthodontics where our goal is to create genera-tions of smiles that last a lifetime.”

The Union CoUnTy Torah Center is a Jewish educational out-reach center and synagogue serving the Union County area. The Chabad-Lubavitch philosophy is our founda-tion and inspiration. A fundamental value of Chabad is an unconditional love and non-judgmental attitude toward all Jews, regardless of affiliation, level of knowledge, or observance. This principle is the basis of all of our work.

The Torah Center’s Sunday Hebrew School is a place where children look forward to spending time. The environment is spirited and the learn-ing is enjoyable and rewarding.

Throughout the year, Jewish families from the entire region enjoy holi-day parties, programs, and hands-on learning experiences such as the Sho-far, Olive Oil, Matzah, and Torah Factories. Every week, we offer warm and welcoming Shabbat services, and every year we hold High Holiday services in a public place — always open to all.

We invite you to come and participate in our many adult education opportunities throughout the year and celebrate our Jewish tradition together with us. At the Union County Torah Center, what we try to offer most of all is warmth, friendliness, and acceptance that you will sense as soon as you walk through the door.

Greetings from Susan Harris,CEO of Wilf Campus

I am so pleased to announce the many new things that are taking place on our Campus. Wilf Campus is truly a growing, vibrant center for senior services. We are so excited to share with

the community that through funding from our Foundation at the Wilf Campus, our staff will be accompanying residents from our assisted and independent living facilities to Israel in

November 2012. This is a special tour designed for seniors living in facilities such as ours. We will visit the Wailing Wall, climb Masada, swim in the dead sea and maybe even ride a camel or

two! Our board members, staff and residents are truly living the Wilf Campus Mission through this very special trip.

We opened and are operating Wilf Transport which provides seniors with non-emergency transport services throughout our area. The program has started out small and will grow over time as our customer

base increases.

Our educational offerings have increased both for professionals in the field of aging as well as caregivers and seniors within the community. Stein Hospice has expanded to provide in-home and facility care from Hunterdon and Warren counties up through Union County and inclusive of all

counties in between. Hospice staff is working hard to educate the public as to the importance of utilizing hospice services for people who have reached that journey in their lives. Through collaborations with area synagogues and Stein Hospice, homemade chicken soup has been delivered to many who are infirm

living in our communities.

Currently, we are planning the opening of our newest agency, Wilf Senior Services at Home. With a community-based system of multiple support services, seniors will have the option to remain in their preferred home setting complete with social outlets and safety management among many

other offerings. Karen Alexander has joined our staff as the Executive Director of this new and innovative agency. Karen is the former Director of Eldercare Services for the Jewish Federation of Greater Metro West New Jersey.

And finally, we have grown so much that we have run out of space! To accommodate our growing needs, we are building a 10,000 square foot Wilf Campus Corporate and Hospice office complex on our campus that will also house a large Conference Center.

And while all these new and exciting areas of growth and expansion are occurring we also continue to provide stellar services at our Stein Assisted Living Residence which is also home to our Jaffa Gate Neighborhood for Memory Care and Our

Wilentz Senior Residence for seniors with low incomes.

Continue to look for information on all of our upcoming and ongoing plans and programs. We will have much to share and tell you about in the coming year.

From our home to yoursB’Shalom,

Susan Harris, CEO, Wilf Campus

Fulfilling the Promise Wilf Campus Residents Travel to Israel

The Wilf Campus is proud to announce our first trip to Israel. Residents and staff from our assisted and independent living facilities will be flying to Israel on November 4, 2012 through November 14, 2012 for what we hope will be the first of many trips to come. The tour is especially designed to accommodate the needs of older adults and will include, Old Jaffa, Tel Aviv, north along the Mediterranean coast to Caesarea, the Upper Galilee and Northern Golan Heights, the Sea of Galilee, Masada, Jerusalem, the Western Wall and so many more exciting tour stops. As you can imagine, our staff, residents and our Board of Trustees are all very excited about the trip!

The Foundation at The Wilf Campus is thrilled, pleased and beyond excited to be able to fund this trip for our seniors from both the Stein Assisted Living and the Wilentz Senior Residences. We expect 10 to 15 residents and 10 staff members and a few family members to participate in the trip. What a wonderful way to be living our Mission! For more information or to make a donation to The Foundation at the Wilf Campus, please contact Rina Richard at [email protected] or 732-568-1155.

Stein Hospice continues to expand its offerings of Alternative TherapiesWhat do massage, dogs, harp and yoga all have in common? All of these are part of the expanding Stein H o s p i c e C o m p l e m e n t a r y Therapy Program. Research has shown that these added therapies have the potential to reduce pain and improve physical and psychological symptoms. They also promote better sleep, boost self-esteem, hope, a

peaceful mind, and reduce anxiety and stress. All of these complementary therapies are offered to Stein Hospice patients and their families. Our nurses and social worker explain the benefit of each therapy and encourage patients to take advantage of them.

Massage Therapy provides considerable alleviation of pain and anxiety through deep relaxation. Massage addresses sleeplessness and isolation by providing soothing touch therapy adapted to each patient or caregivers’ need.

Harp therapy is a powerful tool for physical, emotional, and spiritual support. Our harp therapist uses live music to create a relaxing

environment and facilitate communication between patients and caregivers or family members. Patients nearing end-of-life experience less agitation and have an easier

time with breathing when accompanied by harp music.

Yoga is known to relieve stress, improve circulation and lower tension through calming breath and slow movements. Our yoga therapist assists with gentle exercises tailored to help people with limited mobility due to stroke, arthritis or other chronic diseases. The movement also promotes better sleep.

To kick off the trip, we have created our very own replica of the Western Wall, to which community members are invited to visit and add their prayers to the wall any time from now till November 3, 2012 from 8:30am-8pm.. Residents, family members and staff who are unable to attend will also be adding their prayers. All prayers in our “Wall” will be carried to Jerusalem and placed in the Western Wall by our travel entourage.

Complementary therapies enhance the medical and psychosocial care provided by our interdisciplinary team- the doctors, nurses, aides, chaplain/rabbi, medical social worker and trained volunteers- and adds an extra dimension of comfort for both patients and their families. The therapists visit Stein Hospice patients wherever they live- private homes, skilled nursing facilities as well as assisted living residences.

A Reading Success among Dementia Residents

Residents with Dementia are sometimes more challenging to successfully engage in recreational activities. The Martin and Edith Stein Residence has started a new program on its Jaffa Gate Memory Care Neighborhood called the Montessori

Reading Program. You might be surprised to

see residents with memory impairment reading out

l oud . Tha t ’ s r i gh t , reading out loud. It turns out not only can

they read a loud, but they ’re good at i t and

enjoying it. A new program based on the Montessor i

program for reading is now being used with Older Adults with Dementia. Reading is a skill that often remains even in the later stages of dementia, so a reading and discussion type of group is an activity residents enjoy and benefit from. Special books designed for this purpose can either be made or purchased; the books must have very large, clear print and short sentences. They must also have simple questions about what has been read, which can cue the memory. “We are very excited to offer this program three times a week and

residents are very engaged in the activity” said Jackie Kott, Recreation Director. Jackie recently attended

special training on The Montessori Program and will be incorporating many of the skills

she learned into the recreational activities for the Jaffa Gate Memory Care Residents.

DentIst aDam Feret is concerned about your teeth. He and the members of his practice target people who dread dentists, and people who might not be

able to afford quality dental work in this economy. The free exam gives people an opportunity to take Dr. Feret’s practice for a test drive.

Some people are afraid of monsters under the bed. Others are afraid of flying. But many are afraid of the dentist.

“We are health care providers,” said Dr. Feret, a dentist with a practice in Westfield for 37 years. “Our job is to help people. But because of bad experiences

and sometimes just because of the sound of our instru-ments, people get scared.

The old joke goes: Only take care of the teeth you want to keep.Once you get your permanent teeth, that’s it. You don’t get any more. “There are a lot of people who believe nothing is wrong with their

teeth unless it hurts — a lot and for a long time,” said Alice Brown, prac-tice manager for Dr. Feret and his WestfieldSmiles.com website. “They think if the pain goes away, so did the problem. That’s wrong on so many counts. Pain is a signal by the body that something is wrong. Even if the pain disappears, you need to find out what caused it.”

She continues, “The mouth has sometimes been called the gateway to the rest of your body. That means problems found in the mouth could help detect bigger problems elsewhere in your body. If you care about your health, you need to see a dentist regularly.”

Dr. Feret, who received a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange and his dental degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, has been practicing and living in Westfield since 1973.

His goal is to make a dental visit painless and effective — so he can determine the condition of your teeth and you want to come back.

“I’ve done very well in my practice and in my life,” Dr. Feret said. “I’ve tried to help people in my practice, but sometimes you need to do more. Offering some free dental services is my way of saying thank you.”

What makes Dr. Feret’s practice different?“Quality is our passion,” said Alice Brown. “Our obsession is service.”

Despite having lost her parents and six of her brothers at the age of eight in the Cambodian genocide and facing

many tribulations and considerable hardships during her early years in her homeland,

Seng never lost sight of her goal — to become a successful designer.

She mastered her craft at the age of 15 from her aunt as a couture designer.

Seng’s exceptional artistry stood out among her peers so much that she decided to open her own shop in 2009 with the launch of her personal line, the “Illiana Collection.” The line has been a successful hit. Our customers love her line. Not only are the styles flattering, but they also fit comfortably and create a luxurious look. When it comes to women looking their best, they call on Seng’s talent and trust her ability.

Seng’s respect and deference to the client makes her salon experience extraordinary. Customer service is of the utmost importance and every client is treated as the unique individual that they are. Choosing just the right outfit for that extra special event should be pleasant, relaxed, and enjoyed in a trusting atmosphere. Seng and her staff emphasize the importance of beauty, tailoring, luxury and how a woman feels in her selection.

Driven by excellence, she displays her artistic flair when she designs for any size, shape or style, embracing the woman and the special occasion in which she is celebrating.

We look forward to welcoming you to our friendly and hassle-free environment where our experienced associates will be happy to make your special event even more memorable.

A beloved and caring communitytemple emAnu-el is a Reform congregation whose members reside throughout Union County and beyond. From its beginnings in 1950, Temple Emanu-El has sought to combine progressive Jewish ideals with a continuing respect and appreciation for the timeless traditions of Judaism. Our diverse membership comprises people of all Jewish backgrounds, inter-faith families, singles, and all spiritual seekers.

Our worship is joyful, participatory, and inclusive. Our Shabbat services, Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings provide diversity of worship expe-riences from Shabbat Hallelu to Zimrat Shabbat, from Simchat Shabbat to traditional egalitarian services.

Temple Emanu-El is committed to the furtherance of the beloved, caring com-munity. Our clergy and members of our Caring Community Committee care for members and their families. We are also passionate about tikun olam, our responsibility to create a beloved and caring community outside our walls. The Social Action Committee oversees numerous opportunities to serve our neighbors. The cornerstone of Temple Emanu-El is the belief that learning Torah can transform us by helping us to learn how to live, rather than simply making a living.

We have a continual commitment to the State of Israel, and to our brothers and sisters who reside there. We have a particularly active Men’s Club and Sisterhood, Renaissance Group, Friendship Group, Second Connect, lInkS, and various affinity groups, as well as numerous other committees. We include in our mission statement the welcoming of interfaith families and we offer programs for interfaith couples. Our clergy are always available to meet privately with families and individuals.

Superior service and pricingWe are the second generation of a fam-

ily business that started in 1959. Our 5,500-square-foot showroom rep-resents 57 major manufacturers with

over 700 items on display. We are known for superior service at the lowest prices.

We can do this because we are part of the ADC co-op with $200 million worth of buying power. This is why we can sell at lower prices than all the chain stores and still have superior service.

We have a professionally trained crew to install dish-washers, gas appliances, and built-in appliances. We carry all name brands such as Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Bosch, General Electric, May-tag, Frigidaire, and Electrolux, among many others.
