Limited editions at Evalyn Dunn Gallery

R oig’s newest limited edi-tion screen prints, “New York Marathon” and

“Times Square” have just been released. The vibrant colors in his Times Square piece, pic-tured here, are truly magnificent. Unusual to most editions, Ricar-do’s consist of only twenty prints.

Roig, who grew up in West-field, created an exciting series of iconic Westfield landmarks. These limited edition screen prints are exclusive to Evalyn Dunn Gallery and have been very well received. He also has a Hoboken series that can be seen at the gallery, as well.

This spring, Ricardo was selected to be the featured artist at the Westfield Hadassah “Celebra-tion of the Arts 2014” on May 4th at the Maplewood Country Club.

D entist Adam Feret is concerned about your teeth.

He and the members of his practice target people who dread dentists, and people who might not be able to afford quality dental work in this economy. The free exam gives people an opportunity to take Dr. Feret’s practice for a test drive.

Some people are afraid of monsters under the bed. Others are afraid of flying. But many are afraid of the dentist.

“We are health care providers,” said Dr. Feret, a dentist with a practice in Westfield for 37 years. “Our job is to help people. But because of bad experiences and sometimes just because of the sound of our instru-ments, people get scared. The old joke goes: Only take care of the teeth you want to keep. Once you get your permanent teeth, that’s it. You don’t get any more.

“There are a lot of people who believe nothing is wrong with their teeth unless it hurts — a lot and for a long time,” said Alice Brown, practice manager for Dr. Feret. “They think if the pain goes away, so did the

problem. Even if the pain disappears, you need to find out what caused it.”

She continues, “The mouth has some-times been called the gateway to the rest of your body. That means problems found in the mouth could help detect bigger problems elsewhere in your body. ”

Dr. Feret, who received a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange and his dental degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, has been practicing and liv-ing in Westfield since 1973.

His goal is to make a den-tal visit painless and effective — so he can determine the condition of your teeth and you want to come back.

“I’ve done very well in my practice and in my life,”

Dr. Feret said. “I’ve tried to help people in my practice, but sometimes you need to do more. Offering some free dental services is my way of saying thank you.”

What makes Dr. Feret’s practice differ-ent?

“Quality is our passion,” said Alice Brown. “Our obsession is service.”

Celebrate Jewish Life! The wisdom, beauty, and joy of Judaism is open to all who

wish to learn and grow.

T he Union County Torah Center is a Jewish educational outreach center and synagogue serving the Union County area. The Chabad-Lubavitch philosophy is our foundation and inspiration. A fundamental value of

Chabad is an unconditional love and non-judgmental attitude toward all Jews, regardless of affiliation, level of knowledge, or observance. This principle is the basis of all of our work.

The Torah Center’s Sunday Hebrew School is a place where children look forward to spending time. The environment is spirited and the learning is enjoyable and rewarding.

Throughout the year, Jewish families from the entire region enjoy holiday parties, programs, and hands-on learning experiences such as the Shofar, Olive Oil, Matzah, and Torah Factories. Every week, we offer warm and welcoming Shabbat services, and every year we hold High Holiday services open to the public.

We invite you to come and participate in our many adult education oppor-tunities throughout the year and celebrate our Jewish tradition together with us. At the Union County Torah Center, what we try to offer most of all is warmth, friendliness, and acceptance that you will sense as soon as you walk through the door.

What is Mindfulness-BasedStress Reduction?

MINDFULNESS IS A WAY OF LEARNING to relate directly towhatever is happening in your life so that you can experience greatervitality and well-being in the present moment. Pain, whether physical

or emotional, tends to force our attentionto contract. Rather than thinking aboutwhat may lie ahead or events from thepast, give yourself the gift of learningnew skills from Jon Kabat-Zinn’s inter-nationally esteemed Mindfulness-BasedStress Reduction (MBSR) educationalprogram, the most highly scientificallyvalidated program of its kind, originallyintroduced on Bill Moyers’ “Healing andthe Mind.” MBSR offers a way of livingmore skillfully which can help you ex-pand your awareness, discover choiceswhere none were seen before and liveyour life in a more deeply satisfying way.

It teaches an approach for systematically transforming stress, whetherfrom pain, illness, or the challenges and demands of everyday life.

customers are saying. They may think they have no idea what they want, but the more you engage a woman, the more she tells you about herself. With that information, we then begin to create a vision that both the customer is happy with and the sales professional can fulfill.

In business for more than 60 years, we have the expertise to know what fabrics and colors are not only in vogue, but what looks they can achieve -- how they drape, how they move, and how colors blend together. We have samples and swatches and offer a wide array of trunk shows and events throughout the year. We carry samples from size 2 to 16, with custom sizing available in most cases.

In addition to our fabulous evening and special occasion wear, we have a large selection of sportswear, suits, daytime dresses, and fabulous accessories. Our busy lives don’t begin and end with a onetime event. Most women want to feel good about how they look every day. Even in our casual jeans and boots, it feels good to have a great sweater and belt to finish off the look. We bring you new and interesting designers that cannot be found in every department store. As the third generation owner, the one thing Anne has learned is that women want to express their individuality, and we help you do that.

At Bernstein’s, we love what we do. It gives us great joy to be a part of the journey from the first visit to the very end when you see yourself and your vision realized. It is wonderful being able to be a part of such joyous times for so many years. Our customers have come to us to find things that they couldn’t find anywhere else, and we have gone that extra mile to make them happy.

And don’t for get to ask about “The Final Fluff,” professional wedding dressers who make sure that everyone looks perfect on their special day.

So if you want to impress or dazzle or just feel fabulous, Come to Bernstein’s Fashions, we’d love to share your special day.

T he story of Amuse’s proprietors, CJ Reycraft and Julianne Hodges, is one about love: love of good food, of all things French, and of one another.

Both found their passion for food early in life. For Ms. Hodges it was a global affair, from spending time with her family’s roots in Southern France to kitchen work in Israel while on a kibbutz. Chef Rey-craft knew from his first restaurant job as a line cook that he was most at home in the kitchen.

Chef Reycraft and Ms. Hodges received classical training at The French Culinary Institute in New York City. They met while work-ing at Westfield’s Chez Catherine in 2011, and have been inseparable ever since. In his time at Chez Cather-ine, Chef Reycraft created seasonally inspired French dishes from tasting menus to dessert, that the Star Ledger called “well-focused dishes that consistently hit a mark, each presenting a visual that matches the taste,” in addition to awarding him their “Best French” award for six consecutive years.

When frequent patrons Jim and Missy Ford approached Reycraft about opening a restaurant together, he knew it was fate. Proud of their Westfield roots, they were delighted to settle into a beautiful downtown building that was a post office at the turn of the 20th century.

The team behind Amuse is inspired by the beautiful simplicity of fresh local ingredi-ents, French food and culture, seasonality, and the Westfield community.

Serving lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, Amuse is committed to supporting local growers, suppliers, and artisans to foster a strong food community in Westfield. With a menu that changes with the season, daily specials, and special wine events, there is always something new at Amuse.

(908) 280-0524Audiologist on Staff!

Why should I have my

hearing tested?

A bout 20 percent of adults in the United States, 48 million, report some degree of hearing loss. At age 65, one out of three people has some

degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss is a major public health issue that is the third most com-mon physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. Depending on the cause, it can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. Because the presence of a hearing loss is not visible, these effects may be attributed to aloofness, confusion, or personality changes.

An audiological evaluation is a test that allows the audiologist to assess how sensitive each ear is to individ-ual pitches. Word recognition testing is also an import-ant component because it gives us information as to what treatment options may be appropriate. We will also determine if the hearing loss is sensorineural (nerve dam-age) or conductive (blockage).

Like seeing your doctor or dentist annually, we rec-ommend a hearing check every 12 months if you are over 65 and have risk factors for hearing loss

If you or someone you care about is wondering whether they may have hearing loss, the first step is setting up an appointment with Zounds of Westfield’s Justin Lipp, Au.D., located at 1943 Rt. 22 West in Scotch Plains, NJ Au.D Lic #YA00079600, NJ HAD#25MG0012500. Please bring in this article for a free hearing evaluation!

A t IVF New Jersey, an integral part of the practice philosophy is to make sure that every patient’s experience is as stress-free and pleasant as possible. It’s “treatment for the whole person,” and relies on the philosophy that the

supported patient has more successful outcomes in fertility treatment. It’s not as common a philosophy

as you might think. IVF New Jer-sey patients enjoy uniquely personal care. Physicians at the practice, for instance, communicate personally and directly with their patients by phone and email. Every IVF, egg recipient and gestational patient receives a dedicated nurse through-

out the term of treatment. IVF New Jersey also boasts extensive on-site support services like acupuncture, psychological services, and peer support groups.

Patients benefit from the relationships they establish during their time at the practice. F or some people, there comes a time when the need to make end-of-life choices becomes an important focus. Choosing hospice care has become a more common option toward the end of a terminal illness.

But what should we look for when making that choice? This is where Stein Hospice comes in. When you choose Stein Hospice, you choose a dedicated team of expert, compassionate nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains who bring comforting support right to your bedside.

By choosing Stein Hospice, you become a part of “The Stein Hospice Advantage.” Our program of care provides you with an immediate response to your request for help. Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays, to admit a patient or to care for a patient on our service. Whether in your home or in a hospital, nursing, or assisted-living facility, our staff is ready to assist you. We understand how difficult this passage is and will provide understanding and assistance for the difficult journey that lies ahead.

Stein Hospice has a nurse-to-patient ratio of one nurse to every 10 patients, much lower than the national average. Your nurse will take the time to listen and get to know you and will put the needs, wishes, and preferences of your loved one and family into the forefront of your plan of care. We understand that no single care approach fits all needs. As the only nonprofit Jewish hospice in central New Jersey, we acknowledge that the observance level of each patient and family will define how we address medical decisions, patient needs, and wishes at the end of life. For those who need it, our rabbi/chaplain works closely with the patient/family to ensure that halachic and ethical questions that come up are resolved to the standard of all involved.

“The Stein Hospice Advantage” does not stop here. To ensure that our care goes above and beyond the basic hospice care of keeping the patient comfortable and the family emotionally supported, we offer complemen-tary therapies such as massage, harp, pet, and yoga for patients and family members.

We are a Jewish hospice; we understand the healing powers of chicken soup. With that, we have created “The Chicken Soup Project,” a commu-nity volunteer effort that ensures our patients and their families receive homemade chicken soup to help warm their souls during this difficult time. Other volunteers deliver many kinds of nonmedical support to the patient and family to help wrap them in the loving comfort of our “Stein Hospice Advantage.”

Stein Hospice prides itself on the bereavement support we provide for families of our patients. As long as the family needs support, we are available. Our beautiful annual memorial service serves as a testament to loved ones lost during the year. This event allows our staff and families to be together while remembering the wonderful individuals whose memories are now a blessing and whose last journey we had the honor to share with both the patient and their family.

“The Stein Hospice Advantage,” simply the best in end-of-life care and choices. Call us when end-of-life decisions need to be made; you will be glad you did.

Rudy’s Italian Restaurant Celebrates 10-Year

Anniversary at Garwood Mall

R udy’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria of Garwood is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this month.

“We are very proud to have the opportunity to serve the people of Garwood, Cranford, Westfield and all of Union County,” owner Rick Osso noted. “While the past 10 years have included many challenges, we’ve never compromised our approach to the business — serv-ing fresh, delicious Italian food made to order, offering friendly, attentive service, and treating each customer as part of our family. Thanks to our customers, we’ve been able to grow our business each year.”

Co-owner Chef Dario Fernandez adds, “Even with the changes in the economy and the increased cost of ingredients, we have not changed a single recipe or the quality of ingredients we use. Consistency is key in the restaurant business and our kitchen staff has been making the same great penne vodka, chicken Francese, and potato crusted salmon, for the past ten years.”

Rudy’s is offering the following promotions: $8 Large Cheese Pizza on Mondays (Take-out only), an $8 Martini of the Day and monthly e-coupons by signing up for the Rudy’s mailing list on the website. These promotions are not combinable with any other discounts or promotions and not valid on holidays. Specials, contests, and promotions are featured on Facebook.

New offerings include items include an expanded gluten-free menu, as well as new wines, and catering items. Signature dishes include Chef Dario’s Sunday Sauce over Riga-toni and the Francese Trio.

“We are so grateful for the support we’ve received over the past decade and we want our customers to know that we’ll continue to serve them the great Italian food that they have come to expect — dine in, take out and trays to go,” Osso added.

Global leaders in reproductive medicine right here in New Jersey

W ith IVF delivery rates above 60 percent (sart.org), the experts at Reproductive Medicine Asso-

ciates of New Jersey are leading the way by using some of the most advanced treat-ment options including extended embryo culture, trophectoderm biopsy, compre-hensive chromosome screening, single embryo transfer, and endometrial syn-chrony. These are just some of the tech-niques that RMANJ is using to redefine success for hopeful parents from New Jersey and around the world.

“In the 80’s when IVF was first used commonly in the US, success rates were much lower and the inci-dence of multiple deliveries were much higher. But now, thanks to advanced technologies like SelectCCS, we’re able to offer patients delivery rates around 60 percent but with one embryo transferred — not two or more which is still pretty common in other programs. We can

offer patients uncompromised results and with fewer potential complications” offered Dr. Shefali Shastri, one of RMANJ’s 14 expert physicians prac-

ticing across their network of seven New Jersey offices.

As the most advanced form of Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, SelectCCS improves the embryo selec-tion process by accurately determining which embryos are euploid (normal number of chromosomes) or aneuploid (imbalance of chromosomes). By only transferring those embryos determined to be euploid, patients can make better decisions about their care and improve their chances of success with IVF. “We’re consistently generating 60 percent delivery rates with one embryo which is great for mom and baby as well as for healthcare pro-viders and insurance companies,” added Dr. Shastri.

Darby Road

D arby Road is an Irish American Pub nestled in the downtown section of Scotch Plains. “Darby” opened its doors in the fall of 2012 with great success; due in part to the enthu-

siastic support from the local community. The space boasts hand-some furnishings, rich mahogany woodwork and most importantly a casual relaxed setting. It’s a great meeting place for friends and fam-ily to enjoy great food and drinks. Chef Mike Kobliska has blended together classic Irish fare to go along with traditional American com-fort food to create a truly unique dining experience. While you will always find the classic items on the menu, it is ever changing with new and innovative seasonal items. Darby Road takes pride in using the freshest ingredients to create delicious food for our guests to enjoy daily. No meal is complete without dessert! Our pastry chef Donna Miller creates vintage desserts that are baked daily with love and care.

The pub has a rotating draft selection that boasts sixteen draft beers and over sixty varieties of bottled beer to go along with a great selection of wines and spirits. With all of these choices what better to do than pass the time watching your favorite team on one of our seven flatscreen TV’s lined up across our welcoming bar. You can catch every televised soccer match, as well as all of the major American sporting events. The owners John Brandli, Michael Brennan & Joe Mortarulo look forward to being a part of the community and serving the Garden State for years come. Slàinte!

D espite having lost her parents and six of her brothers at the age of eight in the Cambo-dian genocide and facing many tribulations

and considerable hardships during her early years in her homeland, Seng never lost sight of her goal — to become a successful designer. She mastered her craft at the age of 15 from her aunt as a couture designer. Seng’s exceptional artistry stood out among her peers so much that she decided to open her own shop in 2009 with the launch of her personal line. The line has been a successful hit. Our customers love her line. Not only are the styles flattering, but they also fit com-fortably and create a luxurious look. When it comes to women looking their best, they call on Seng’s talent and trust her ability.

Seng’s respect and deference to the client makes her salon experience extraordinary. Customer service is of the utmost importance and every client is treated as the unique individual that they are. Choosing just the right outfit for that extra special event should be pleasant, relaxed, and enjoyed in a trusting atmo-sphere. Seng and her staff emphasize the importance of beauty, tailoring, luxury, and how a woman feels in their selection. Driven by excellence, she displays her artistic flair when she designs for any size, shape or style, embracing the woman and the special occasion in which she is celebrating.

S hackamaxon Country Club, the nearly century old pri-vate club located 30 minutes

from Manhattan in Union County, is gearing up for the spring season with exciting opportunities for golf membership. Voted as one of the Garden State’s top ten “Best Private Club Bargains” by the readers of Golfstyles New Jersey magazine, the venerable Shack-amaxon Country Club offers introductory, weekday introduc-tory and intermediate golf mem-berships.

Since being purchased by an affiliate of RDC Golf Group in December 2011, the club has experienced an exciting renais-sance with its golf membership nearly tripling in number and rapidly approaching full capacity. Shackamaxon’s classic, A.W. Tillinghast-designed golf course features tree-lined fairways and boasts

the architect’s first-ever “island green.” The club recently com-pleted a full bunker restoration and is currently enhancing its men’s locker room facility.

Shackamaxon’s introductory membership (open only to first time members) features full golf and social privileges with no initi-ation fees and “dues only” for the first 24 months. The club also offers a weekday introductory membership and an intermediate category that is open exclusively to those individuals under 40 years of age.

Tri-state area golfers should act now to enjoy all the benefits that Shackamaxon has to offer. In addi-tion to golf, the club features an expansive clubhouse and will soon

break ground on its resort-style pool facility (slated to open in 2015). For more information, please con-tact Director of Membership David Miniman.
