S hovlin Mattress Factory? What’s that? What happened to the old Mat-tress Factory? That’s what we’ve been hearing from some of our cus-tomers lately. The answer is: Nothing! We’re still the same business

we’ve been for the last 40 years. Why the name change, you ask? Well, we simply felt it was time to put our name out there for all to see. After all, we live in this community, and we are passionate about what we do. Roosterspin, now open in Westfield, offers New Jersey’s most succulent, crispiest and tastiest,

R oosterspin restaurant’s menu features their famous Korean fried chicken as well as unique new additions, including rice burger sliders, Korean short rib-Galbi, Kimchi fries, and freshly pressed sugarcane juice.

The 85-seat restaurant will feature its famous Korean double fried chicken and other Kore-an-inspired fare in a casual atmosphere infused with the sound of jazz from a collection of 7,000 vintage LPs.

The cornerstone of Roosterspin’s menu is the famous made-to-order Korean fried chicken. The chicken is double-fried to melt away excess fat, result-ing in a paper-thin skin that is hand-brushed with either soy-garlic or hot-and-spicy sauce. It is excep-tionally crispy outside and juicy within.

The menu will also include several dishes newly created by Executive Chef Hyun Han. They include Rice Burger Sliders, comprised of pan-toasted rice buns stuffed with spicy tuna, shrimp & calamari or ground

short rib, and Galbi LA Cut, which is marinated Korean short ribs laterally cut across the bones and barbecued, as well as Kimchi Fries. Other menu selections include Jeon (traditional Korean pancake patties), rice and noodle dishes, sushi rolls and heartier fare like rib eye steak.

The décor at Roosterspin is retro-industrial, with metal tubing and distressed wood throughout the space. Edison light bulbs lend a romantic glow, and 7,000 vintage jazz LPs a re stacked against the wall. Aside from their formidable visual appeal, they will serve as the library for a jazz DJ on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with live jazz trios performing on Friday and Saturday nights. Custom-made chairs evoking the front ends of Jeeps and stools shaped like oversized boots add a whimsical element to the space.

Roosterspin’s address is 251 North Avenue W Westfield, NJ., facing the New Jersey Tran-sit train station. The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays through Thurs-days, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

An Invitation to Learn Jon Kabat-Zinn's Powerful Methods forReducing Stress and Enhancing Overall Health and Well-being

(Please note that MBSR is an educational course and not psychotherapy. If you suspect that youhave medical or psychological issues, please pursue appropriate treatment.)

What is Mindfulness-BasedStress Reduction?

MINDFULNESS IS A WAY OF LEARNING to relate directly towhatever is happening in your life so that you can experience greatervitality and well-being in the present moment. Pain, whether physical

or emotional, tends to force our attentionto contract. Rather than thinking aboutwhat may lie ahead or events from thepast, give yourself the gift of learningnew skills from Jon Kabat-Zinn’s inter-nationally esteemed Mindfulness-BasedStress Reduction (MBSR) educationalprogram, the most highly scientificallyvalidated program of its kind, originallyintroduced on Bill Moyers’ “Healing andthe Mind.” MBSR offers a way of livingmore skillfully which can help you ex-pand your awareness, discover choiceswhere none were seen before and liveyour life in a more deeply satisfying way.

It teaches an approach for systematically transforming stress, whetherfrom pain, illness, or the challenges and demands of everyday life.

Sam Thomasson describes the day his daughter Kate was born as the happiest of his life. When Kate was a toddler she lost most of her hearing due to a sudden illness. Through the years, it became clear that the costly traditional aids that were fitted for Kate were ineffective, causing discomfort as well as affecting her speech development. Sam decided that something had to be done to improve Kate’s life. An accomplished electrical engineer who worked on products from computer chips to pace makers, Sam began poring over design specifications of the leading hearing aids. He installed an electronics lab in their home and worked nights and weekends — with Kate often at his side — to develop hearing aids that would solve issues like feedback, background noise, and poor sound quality. When Kate was sixteen, she put on the first Zounds® prototype, which immediately transformed her life. She could finally hear high pitch sounds, enjoy music, and speak more clearly. Ultimately, Sam and his team of dedicated e n g i n e e r s a m a s s e d 57 ground-breaking patents with state of the art technology that can only be found in Zounds® hearing aids.

D entist Adam Feret is concerned about your teeth.

He and the members of his practice target people who dread dentists, and people who might not be able to afford quality dental work in this economy. The free exam gives people an opportunity to take Dr. Feret’s practice for a test drive.

Some people are afraid of monsters under the bed. Others are afraid of flying. But many are afraid of the dentist.

“We are health care providers,” said Dr. Feret, a dentist with a practice in Westfield for 37 years. “Our job is to help people. But because of bad experiences and sometimes just because of the sound of our instru-ments, people get scared. The old joke goes: Only take care of the teeth you want to keep. Once you get your permanent teeth, that’s it. You don’t get any more.

“There are a lot of people who believe nothing is wrong with their teeth unless it hurts — a lot and for a long time,” said Alice Brown, practice manager for Dr. Feret. “They think if the pain goes away, so did the

problem. Even if the pain disappears, you need to find out what caused it.”

She continues, “The mouth has some-times been called the gateway to the rest of your body. That means problems found in the mouth could help detect bigger problems elsewhere in your body. ”

Dr. Feret, who received a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange and his dental degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, has been practicing and liv-ing in Westfield since 1973.

His goal is to make a den-tal visit painless and effective — so he can determine the condition of your teeth and you want to come back.

“I’ve done very well in my practice and in my life,”

Dr. Feret said. “I’ve tried to help people in my practice, but sometimes you need to do more. Offering some free dental services is my way of saying thank you.”

What makes Dr. Feret’s practice differ-ent?

“Quality is our passion,” said Alice Brown. “Our obsession is service.”

Creating the right look

A nne Weiner has some experience with creating the right look for her customers. The owner of Bernstein’s Fashions in Edison has a degree in musical theater and spent many years as a professional singer. The entire

staff understands the process of creating the right look. First, we listen carefully to what our customers are saying. They may think they have no idea what they want, but the more you engage a woman, the more she tells you about herself. With that information, we then begin to create a vision that both the customer is happy with and the sales professional can fulfill.

In business for more than 60 years, we have the expertise to know what fabrics and colors are not only in vogue, but what looks they can achieve -- how they drape, how they move, and how colors blend together. We have samples and swatches and offer a wide array of trunk shows and events throughout the year. We carry samples from size 2 to 16, with custom sizing available in most cases.

In addition to our fabulous evening and special occasion wear, we have a large selection of sportswear, suits, daytime dresses, and fabulous accessories. Our busy lives don’t begin and end with a onetime event. Most women want to feel good about how they look every day. Even in our casual jeans and boots, it feels good to have a great sweater and belt to finish off the look. We bring you new and interesting designers that cannot be found in every department store. As the third generation owner, the one thing Anne has learned is that women want to express their individuality, and we help you do that.

At Bernstein’s, we love what we do. It gives us great joy to be a part of the journey from the first visit to the very end when you see yourself and your vision realized. It is wonderful being able to be a part of such joyous times for so many years. Our customers have come to us to find things that they couldn’t find anywhere else, and we have gone that extra mile to make them happy.

And don’t for get to ask about “The Final Fluff,” professional wedding dressers who make sure that everyone looks perfect on their special day.

So if you want to impress or dazzle or just feel fabulous, Come to Bern-stein’s Fashions, we’d love to share your special day.

I f you haven’t been to Patricia & Paul Artisans of Fine Oils and Balsamics yet you are truly missing out on one of the area’s most beautiful best finds. Located at 20 Elm Street in Westfield, Patricia & Paul offers over 60 varieties of extra-virgin

olive oil and unbelievably delicious and addictive balsamics from Modena, Italy. The best part is that you are able to sample them all and learn from the knowledgeable team all prior to purchasing.

The olive oil is from around the world including Italy, Spain, Chili, Greece, and the United States. All of the extra-virgin oils are kosher, so fresh, and have been ultra-premium certified so you know they have all the health benefits inherent in olives. The balsamics have all been aged to perfection — there is a wonderful 18 year old traditional one that is so rich and smooth that it pairs well with any of the olive oils or is excellent on its own drizzled over cheese. The chocolate balsamic provides all the flavor of chocolate but none of the guilt and is delicious over strawberries and grilled fruit.

What makes Patricia & Paul so unique is that in addition to all the delicious and nutritious oils and balsamics there is a whole host of wonderful pestos, fruit spreads, French mustard, crackers, Harney teas, sea salts, dipping dishes, and Spanish pot-tery that all make for the perfect gift! Patricia & Paul and their wonderful staff will work with you to customize gifts for any occasion and will keep well within your budget. With the holidays coming up it is never too early to begin planning. If you place your gift basket order prior to November 15 you will receive a 15 percent discount. Your Jewish Senior Community of Choice

Somerset, New Jersey • WilfCampus.org (732) 568-1155 • [email protected]

People have many choices throughout their lifetimes. For some, there comes a time when the need to make end of life choices becomes an important focus. Today, choosing hospice care has become a more

common option toward the end of a terminal illness. But what should we look for when making that choice? This is where Stein Hospice comes in. When you choose Stein Hospice, you choose a dedicated team of expert, com-passionate nurses, home health aides, social workers and chaplains that bring comforting support right to your bedside.

By choosing Stein Hospice, you become a part of “The Stein Hospice Advantage”. Our program of care provides you with an immediate response to your request for help. Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays to meet and assess a new patient for admission or to care for a patient or family in crisis that is already on our service. Whether your loved one is at home, in a hospital, nursing or assisted living facility setting, our staff is ready to assist you. We understand how difficult this passage is and that most people would prefer to open their homes and intimate moments to someone they can relate to, someone that will become a friend and a compan-ion for the difficult journey that lies ahead.

Stein Hospice has a nurse to patient ratio of 1 nurse to every 10 patients, much lower than the national average. This low ratio results in attentiveness to our patients beyond the time that other hospices often can give. Your nurse will take the time to listen, to get to know you and will put the needs, wishes, and preferences of your loved one and family into the forefront of your plan of care. We also understand that one care approach does not fit all needs. As the only non-profit Jewish hospice in central New Jersey, we acknowledge that the observance level of each patient and family will define how we address medical decisions, patient needs, and wishes at the end of life. For those who need it, our rabbi/chaplain works closely with the patient/family to ensure that halachic and ethical questions that come up are resolved to the standard of all involved.

“The Stein Hospice Advantage” does not stop here. To ensure that our care goes above and beyond the basic hospice care of keeping the patient comfort-able and the family emotionally supported, we offer complementary therapies such as massage and harp, for patients and family members. Volunteers offer their time and hearts to our patients by sitting bedside to read aloud or do any number of activities, or to simply offer break time to the primary care-giver. We have volunteers who knit and crochet lap blankets and shawls that become part of our comfort care package for each new patient. We are a Jewish Hospice; we understand the healing powers of chicken soup. With that, we have created “The Chicken Soup Project”, a community volunteer effort, that ensures our patients and their families receive homemade chicken soup to help warm their souls during this difficult time. Other volunteers also deliver many kinds of non-medical support to the patient and family to help wrap them in the loving comfort of our “Stein Hospice Advantage”.

Stein Hospice prides itself on the bereavement support we provide for fam-ilies of our patients. As long as the family needs support, we are available. Our staff often attends funerals and makes Shiva visits. Our social workers follow up with the bereaved family members by phone, mail and in-person visits. Our bereavement support group meets on the second Tuesday of each month and all are invited to attend.

Lastly, our beautiful annual memorial service serves as a testament to loved ones lost during the year. This event allows our staff and families to be together while remembering the wonderful individuals whose memories are now a blessing and whose last journey we had the honor to share with both the patient and their family. “The Stein Hospice Advantage” is simply the best in end of life care and choices. Call us when end of life decisions need to be made, you will be glad that you did.

Seng’s excep-tional artistry stood out among her peers so much that she decided to open her own shop in 2009 with the launch of her personal line. The line has been a success-ful hit. Our customers love her line. Not only are the styles flattering, but they also fit comfortably and create a luxurious look. When it comes to women looking their best, they call on Seng’s talent and trust her ability.

The facilities at Camp Kinder Ring, indoor and out, allow for full uninterrupted programming day or night, rain or shine. The Health Center at camp is staffed 24/7 by a team of nurses and a doctor and is stocked with all necessary medical supplies and medications. Celebrate Jewish Life! The wisdom, beauty, and joy of Judaism is open to all who

wish to learn and grow.

T he Union County Torah Center is a Jewish educational outreach center and synagogue serving the Union County area. The Chabad-Lubavitch philosophy is our foundation and inspiration. A funda-

mental value of Chabad is an unconditional love and non-judgmental attitude toward all Jews, regardless of affiliation, level of knowledge, or observance. This principle is the basis of all of our work.

The Torah Center’s Sunday Hebrew School is a place where children look forward to spending time. The environment is spirited and the learning is enjoyable and rewarding.

Throughout the year, Jewish families from the entire region enjoy holiday parties, programs, and hands-on learning experiences such as the Shofar, Olive Oil, Matzah, and Torah Factories. Every week, we offer warm and welcoming Shabbat services, and every year we hold High Holiday services open to the public.

We invite you to come and participate in our many adult education oppor-tunities throughout the year and celebrate our Jewish tradition together with us. At the Union County Torah Center, what we try to offer most of all is warmth, friendliness, and acceptance that you will sense as soon as you walk through the door.

J oy Design has long specialized in distinctive antiques, fashionable vintage accessories, and cre-ative interiors. Yearning to work more closely with

her loved textiles and antiques, founder and long time Westfield resident, Marion Schwartz, has found the perfect marriage of the two, creating unique headwear for the confident woman. Her collection is available through her website, JoyDesignInc.com and also locally at Gallery U Boutique in Westfield.

The Joy Design, Inc. collection includes couture mil-linery, fascinators, curated, reconstructed, and enhanced vintage hats, hat and scarf ensembles, and linen head-wraps but they’ve expanded to also include headbands, combs, bridal headwear, sashes and accessories. Most are one of a kind and, and with the exception of vintage hats, all are made by hand. Some begin with one-of-a-kind vintage hats in excellent mint condition. Others are handmade couture designs or limited edition head-wraps. All are hand assembled with the finest materials and most unique adornments using balanced elements of dramatic flowers, whimsical feathers, luxurious trims, and carefully selected beads. Her designs are comfort-

able, yet daring, dressy, and dramatic!Marion comments, “Through Joy Design, I

strive to create unique headwear that is carefully balanced, bold, fanciful, and beautifully hand fin-ished. Whether utilizing traditional millinery tech-niques or embellishing vintage hats, I passionately design and create handmade headwear that is esthet-ically delicious, functionally comfortable, pleasing to the eye, and soothing to the soul.” Combin-ing textural interest with intricate details, Marion strives to achieve outstanding and flattering head-wear to beguile and charm everyone who sees you!

Whether through JoyDesignInc.com or at Gal-lery U Boutique, Marion is dedicated to bringing you an unparalleled shopping experience. even better. Please join us at TBEMC of Cran-ford and Westfield, for our Casino Night on November 15, 2014. The entire Jewish community is invited to this fun, adults-only evening, which also includes drinks and snacks plus raffle prizes.

Funds raised during Casino Night will support our plan for full building accessibility for all community members. Darby Road

D arby Road is an Irish American Pub nestled in the down-town section of Scotch Plains. “Darby” opened its doors in the fall of 2012 with great success; due in part to the enthu-

siastic support from the local community. The space boasts hand-some furnishings, rich mahogany woodwork and most importantly a casual relaxed setting. It’s a great meeting place for friends and fam-ily to enjoy great food and drinks. Chef Mike Kobliska has blended together classic Irish fare to go along with traditional American com-fort food to create a truly unique dining experience. While you will always find the classic items on the menu, it is ever changing with new and innovative seasonal items. Darby Road takes pride in using the freshest ingredients to create delicious food for our guests to enjoy daily. No meal is complete without dessert! Our pastry chef Donna Miller creates vintage desserts that are baked daily with love and care.

The pub has a rotating draft selection that boasts sixteen draft beers and over sixty varieties of bottled beer to go along with a great selection of wines and spirits. With all of these choices what better to do than pass the time watching your favorite team on one of our seven flat screen TV’s lined up across our welcoming bar. You can catch every televised soccer match, as well as all of the major American sporting events. Grand illusions, levitating women, exotic animals, beautiful dancers, escapologists, comedy magic, quick change artists, sleight of hand… the greatest magical

touring show in history is coming to the State Theatre in New Brunswick on October 17th.

Masters of Illusion: Believe the Impossible, based on the hit television show Masters of Illusion: Impossible Magic, show-cases the world’s greatest illusionists and entertainers. No camera tricks, no computer graphics — just amazing illu-sions in real time, in front of a live audience.

The five Masters of Illusion are veterans of the most pres-tigious stages of magic, from Vegas to Disney, and are recipi-ents of the most sought after awards in the business — “Stage Magician of the Year,” “Magician of the Year,” “Illusionist of the Year,” and more.

These magicians aren’t satisfied with simple sleight of hand tricks; they specialize in creating unforgettable illu-sions — everything you could possibly imagine and others that you’d never dream possible. Share this unbelievable experience with your whole family — you’ll be trying to fig-ure it out for years to come. See Masters of Illusion: Believe the Impossible on October 17, at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, before it vanishes…without a trace.
