For many of Rochester’s “health-conscious consumers,” the People’s Food Co-op is already a staple in their grocery-shopping repertoire. But despite its fresh, local produce, healthy, sustainable products and seemingly endless options at the grab-and-go deli and hot bar, the Co-op offers so much more.

“You don’t have to be a member to shop here,” Member Services Manager Brad Smith tells Shop Rochester. “That’s the biggest misperception people have about the Co-op. “For our shoppers’ convenience, PFC offers ample free parking for all of our customers.”

The Co-op is a full-service grocery store with food for every budget, offering exceptional quality organic and conventional produce and even has uncommon fruit and vegetable varieties—beyond what you might find at a grocery store. The Co-op’s in-house bakery uses real food ingredients in its custom cakes and fresh bakery items—a detail that draws appreciative customers back time and time again. The Co-op has a butcher, a variety of fresh seafood, a full service coffee bar and deli, a wellness and beauty department, and other unique items for the adventurous shopper. Cheese lovers will enjoy the sizable cheese

counter, stocked with every kind of cheese you can imagine. Lastly, shoppers can save big in the Co-op’s huge Bulk Department that carries everything from rice, beans and nuts to bulk herbs and spices.

Customers rave about the Oat-Pecan Burger and the Chicken Flatbread available in the deli, but if you’re looking for something to cook at home, stop by the meat department. “We have an impressive array of sausages made in-house,” says Meat and Seafood Manager Ethan S c h a n d e l m e i e r . “Plus, this year’s salmon is at the lowest price I’ve seen in more than six years. Both the wild King and Sockeye salmon are incredible.” And if you’re looking for a new grilling favorite, fire up the grill for the 60/40 Burger and the Short Rib Patty. “They are the future of grilling,” predicts Schandelmeier.

“We like to keep our displays fresh and simple,” Wendy Byers, owner of The Mouse gift and home decor shop tells Shop Rochester. “There are so many things in here, it’s a daily challenge. “But it’s a happy challenge,” she adds, explaining how fun it is to work side-by-side with her mom, Jeanne DeBruin, who started the store 28 years ago this month at the same location.“One of us will get an idea and then, before you know it, we’re creating a whole new display,” Wendy says. Recently they remodeled a large section of the store with many of HGTV’s ‘Fixer Upper’ looks, which coincide with the neutral palette and natural look that has always appealed to the mother-daughter team.

Their 6,000 sq. ft. shop located in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center is one of the largest family-owned local gift and home décor shops in the area. It’s the place that Rochester-area residents can visit knowing that they’ll discover something delightful and unexpected.

The Mouse has deep roots in the community, a fact that Jeanne and Wendy take seriously. For example, supporting Rochester’s Channel One food bank is their goal every ‘Mouse Monday’ when customers who bring in a food donation receive 30% off their purchases that day.

Jeanne and Wendy know a little something about having fun, too. Treats, door prizes, laughter and a big sale await customers who frequent ‘Girls Nite Out’ every Wednesday night from 4-8pm. “Everyone’s invited to drop in, even guys,” Wendy says, smiling.

Recently the pair met Don Short, star of the HGTV series ‘West End Salvage’ who shares their love of blending old and new items. They have an invitation to fill a truck from his five-story warehouse in Des Moines where his TV series is filmed, and a promise that he will drive it up to Rochester himself. “You never know what you’re going to find at The Mouse,” Wendy states.
