People are talking, and they ’ re talking about Tennessee. CNBC has ranked

Tennessee #14 in ‘ America ’ s Top States for Business 2014 ′ and Nash-

ville ’ s 2014, 4th of July fireworks show garnered national attention naming it

second only to New York ’ s. With all this chatter and enthusiasm, it ’ s no

wonder that tourism and Tennessee vacationers are on the rise and people

are packing their bags and hitting the road to work and play in Tennessee.

According to the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development ’ s 2013 re-

port, The Economic Impact of Travel on Tennessee Counties, domestic and

international travelers directly spent $16.7 billion in Tennessee during 2013, an

increase of 3.4 percent from 2012. In addition, Tennessee saw a record-

setting 96.4 million person-stays in 2013, a 4.7 percent increase over 2012.

Page 7: Shop Main Street Tennessee Holiday Catalog 2014 final

In addition, The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has recently

launched the, ‘ Made in Tennessee ’ campaign recruiting the help and sup-

port of Tennessee celebrities Dolly Parton, Keith Urban and Jack White.

How Tourism Helps Tennessee Small Businesses

The Center for Rural Affairs (http://www.cfra.org )

reported that in the past five years tourism has seen

some big changes. ‘ A growing number of travelers

are not interested in cookie cutter restaurants, lodging

and attractions. Instead, they want local food, local

attractions and connection to the lifestyles of local

people. This has lead to huge new trends – the Slow Food Movement, Au-

thentic Tourism, Geotourism, Agritourism, Heritage Tourism and more.

“ G eotourism is all about preserving local culture. Heritage tourism is getting

visitors onto the backroads looking for historic churches, quilt barns and tradi-

tional crafts. Authentic tourism attracts visitors who like to see things just the

way they are. The Slow Food Movement is getting people off the Interstate and

into small town restaurants, where local cafes serve up their own specialties. ’

As Tennessee becomes more and more popular, small businesses have the

opportunity to work together , within and with their cities; to set themselves

apart from 'Big Box ’ shopping hubs and create communities that celebrate

their uniqueness. It is through small businesses that cities will distinctively

demonstrate their individual culture, drawing tourists in who are looking out-

side the ‘ box ’ for quality experiences as well as more authentic encounters

while enjoying the greatness of Tennessee.

Your local UPS Store has been planning for peak season since August and with only a few more weekends before Christmas they are stocked and ready to ship your packages during the mad rush of the holiday season.

To insure that your packages get to their destination on time and in one piece, there are several things you can do in order to make the shipping task as hassle free as possible, including fol-lowing these ‘6 Best Practice Tips for Shipping Packages During The Holidays’.

1. BOXES. Your local UPS Store has over 60 box sizes available and special-ize in the packaging of unusual items. ‘The most unusual thing we shipped last year was a giant set of angel wings. The wings were much like the ones worn by the Victoria’s Secret models!’

2. HOURS. Most UPS Stores extend their hours in December. Some are even open on Sundays right before Christmas, and most will have extended hours on the weekend.

The best time to visit your UPS Store is non-peak hours. Lunch time is very very busy. Usually between 8 a.m-9 a.m. in the morning is slower, as well as the last hour of business around 7 pm in the evening.

3. SHIPPING OPTIONS. The UPS Store offers lots of shipping options. We offer all UPS Ground, Next Day, Second Day, and 3 Day Select options. We offer First Class, Priority and Express Mail via USPS, too. We can see all car-rier rates at once on our shipping stations. We also have a chart that gives you the deadlines for shipping to foreign countries and military locations.

4. PACKAGE IT RIGHT. Packaging is an art and a science. Do not use news-paper to wrap fragile items. Use bubble wrap to protect those precious gifts. When you fill a box with peanuts fill it up, shimmy the box back and forth, then add more peanuts.

5. COOKIES, PIES and CAKES. We specialize in shipping cookies and other sweet goodies.

Don’t trust shipping these sweet concoctions with anyone else except The UPS Store. The best way to ship cookies is to store them in a non fragile air tight container, arrange cookies tight, they should not move. Then put the air-tight container in a strong shipping box with peanuts on all six sides. Follow similar techniques with packing your pies and cakes. The UPS Stores are very familiar with dry ice and it’s properties. Dry Ice is available.

Page 11: Shop Main Street Tennessee Holiday Catalog 2014 final

6. FLOTSAM and JETSAM. Always cover old labels. DO NOT tear them off, this weakens the box. Avoid using boxes that have succumb to damp condi-tions in your garage. The UPS Store has special boxes for ipads, iphones, and laptops. These boxes were tested and approved for shipping in UPS labs. Do not put the labels on the creases of the box. The integrity of your box is very important. We will let you know if your box has integrity. If it does not have in-tegrity our team of experts will pack it for you. Anything packed by our team of experts is guaranteed. SPECIAL THANKS: These expert tips were prepared with love by Janna von Kessel, a 16 year UPS Store veteran. Holidays can be extremely fun for humans, but often are a dreadful ex-perience for pets. Help keep your pets safe by following these 7 safety tips. by Kathy Jarrell—Southern Paws Pet Sitting & Daily Dog Walking Thanksgiving 1. Don’t be a turkey on “Turkey Day”. Holiday treats, such as rich, fatty scraps, bones from pork and poultry, alcoholic beverages, chocolate and other sweets and candies can be harmful or toxic to pets. These foods have been lined to pancreatitis in pets. Signs and symptoms of an inflamed pancreas include vomiting and abdominal pain, and severe pancreatitis requires emer-gency medical care and treatment. Christmas 2. O Christmas Tree. Below it, in it. On top of it and around it. You name it and the Christmas tree poses the possibility of harm to your pets. Pine tree water can be poisonous. So it’s best to use an enclosed tree stand. If that’s not possible, be sure to cover open tree stand bases. The tree should be se-cured to the wall with strong wire or twine because a toppling tree can cause serious to curious dogs and cats, not to mention your human child, too. 3. Decorations can be dangerous. Tinsel entices canines and felines alike. Glass ornaments look like shiny fetch balls, Ornaments and hooks, twinkling lights, electrical wiring—they all pose significant danger to pets by ingestion or contact. When no one’s is around to supervise, unplug lights and any electri-cal decorations a pet has access to. Cover or tack down electrical cords. 4. Common holiday pet poisons include plants. Holiday plants that are poisonous to pets include the berries of mistletoe, holly, hibiscus, Christmas roses and the poinsettia. Keep these out of reach of your pet. 5. Sugar free doesn’t guarantee a happy ending. Xylitol, a sugar substi-tute, causes a dog’s blood sugar to drop quickly. This poisoning can be treated, but causes liver failure if not treated properly. 6. Macadamia nuts aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Dogs experience severe weakness in their back legs, appearing paralyzed after ingesting maca-damia nuts. Dogs usually recover from this condition within three days. 7. Pets and bread dough don’t mix well. When bread dough is ingested it continues to rise, causing an intestinal blockage.

This cake has quickly become one of my family's favorites, and is one of my top sellers this time of the year. It is gooey and oh so good! It literally tastes like fall in your mouth. So many people are hooked on pumpkin treats this time of the year, and don't get me wrong, pumpkin is wonderful but there is nothing like a good old fashion apple cake. And when you add cream cheese to it, you know that you have a hit on your hands. Ingredients needed for this delectable dessert are: 4 cups of chopped apples 2 cups of sugar 1/2 cup of oil 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla 2 cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 cup chopped walnuts 8 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup butter 1/3 cup caramel topping 4 1/4 C powdered sugar 1. Peel apples, I love to use my apple peeler and corer, it’s the BEST inven-tion ever created. Saves me so much time. 2. Remove cores and chop into small pieces. Then I toss them into a bowl with two cups of sugar. I lightly stir the apples pieces with the sugar so that each piece is coated and let set so that the sugar start to turn into liquid over the apples, about 1 hour. While waiting, mix dry ingredients. 3. Mix dry ingredients and apple mixture together and stir until moist. Add oil, eggs, and vanilla (walnuts are optional). 4. Pour. Pour the ingredients into a well-greased and floured Bundt pan. 5. Place in oven. Place in a preheated oven set on 350 degrees. Bake until it is firm to the touch, usually about 30 minutes.

6. Make the icing. Combine cream cheese and butter, both at room tem-perature, and mix until blended. Add the caramel topping and slowly add in your powdered sugar. Mix until smooth. 7. Pour icing. Note: It is important that you do not put this icing on the cake until the cake is completely cool. You want the icing to stay firmly on the cake when placed on it. 8. Add more nuts. (Optional) Add a few extra nuts to the top just to make it prettier. The wonderful thing about this cake is that you can also make it into muffins. Or you can make it into a 9x13 sheet cake as well. This recipe is so versatile and so yummy. I know you will enjoy it!! If you choose to say "Hey, I think this is easier just to buy it from Lori Ann", then I will be more than happy to take your order. This cake sells for $22 and I do deliver to the Sumner County, TN area.
