LESS IS MORE Fans of Scandinavian

minimalism will be in their element at Whyred’s Gothenburg store. The Swedish label’s clothing for men and women is based based on classic styles with edge, often inspired by modern art and popular music: its signature parka jackets are a perfect example of this. For spring/summer 2016, Whyred’s creative director and co-founder Roland Hjort has created a wearable collection where clean lines and boxy shapes – in the form of oversized trench coats, button-down shirts and simple dresses – are the order of the day. thWhyred, Södra Larmgatan 13, 411 16 Gothenburg, +46 (0)31 711 3000, whyred.com

WEAR IT WELL

For spring/summer 2016, Nudie Jeans is going back to its Gothenburg roots. The jean brand’s home town in spring is a rich source of inspiration, particularly its romantic palette of foggy greys and thistle greens mixed with light indigo and raven black, which are all apparent in the latest collection. The look is ‘utilitarian meets contemporary heritage’, with classic washed jeans featuring a broken-in, heavy-worn look, made to be worn with weathered chambray tops and camouflage bombers. Sustainabil-ity is at the heart of the brand’s production process, and everything is made from organic cotton and other ethically sourced materials. rdNudie Jeans, Vallgatan 15, 411 16 Gothenburg, +46 (0)31 609360, nudiejeans.com

SMALL PLEASURES

When Stockholm-based

Mini Rodini came on the

scene in 2006, it signalled a

revolution in childrenswear.

Founder Cassandra Rhodin’s

designs were playful, colourful

and creative. While the label’s

quality and ethical credentials

won over parents, the garments

themselves appealed to children

because they were fun and un-

like anything else on the market

at the time. In fact, when the

frst collection of cotton prints

debuted in Sweden, they sold

out almost immediately. Today,

the brand is carried in over 500

locations around the world,

including Selfridges in London

and Barneys in New York. th

Growing up in Stockholm,

brothers Mathias and Michael

Klingvall shared a passion for

music and a fedgling business

making speakers. Almost 30 years

later, they rekindled their interest

and launched Vain Sthlm, with its

line of in-ear headphones. Avail-

able in black, white, grey, pale

brown, they combine sleek looks

and exacting build quality to ofer

Gothenburg, now the second largest

city in Sweden, is also one of the

most culturally modern, and it

would be easy to forget the centuries

of history that have made it what it

is today. Yet the city’s past is a

constant influence on its present.

In fact, two of Gothenburg’s most

successful department stores,

Gillblads and Ströms, are not just

influenced by the city’s history,

they’re part of it.

Celebrating its 150th anniver-

sary this year, Gillblads has stood

at the same location on Korsgatan

since its founding in 1866, when it

filled a whole six floors – an

enormous space at the time – with

a wide variety of goods. In its early

days the store offered fashion along

with a range of accessories, beauty

products and interior design

objects, as well as producing its own

hats, furs, jewellery and more.

Today the focus is more firmly

on fashion, but the founding

principles remain the same:

excellent quality and service, and the

best range of products possible.

From international names including

Armani Collezioni to noteworthy

Swedish brands such as Stylein, the

range is expertly curated. ‘It has

always been important that there are

unique brands and products in the

store that are not seen everywhere,’

explains Gillblads’ owner Mikael

Olsson, whose family acquired the

store in 1983. For Olsson, there is

one crucial element that has ensured

the company’s longevity: customer

service. ‘It’s number one, no more,

no less,’ he says.

This is what keeps visitors

returning time and again. Staff

and its most loyal customers know

that they will be greeted on each visit

by a friendly face who understands

their personal needs. An in-store

tailor adds to the feeling of luxury. It

is these little details, the extras that

come as standard when you shop at

Gillblads, that set the store apart.

With 150 years of experience in

pleasing discerning clients, the team

naturally excels, and great service

will never go out of style.

Ströms may be a little younger

than Gillblads – it celebrates its

130th year in 2016 – but is still one

of the city’s oldest retail spaces, and

also something of an institution in

Gothenburg. In 1886, founder Carl

Hilmer Ström opened a small

tailoring and clothing store on

Torggatan. Over the next few

decades, it grew to become one of

the city’s largest menswear

specialists; so much so that a change

of premises became necessary, and

in 1935 Ströms found a new home,

in the six-storey building on

Kungsgatan where it can still be

found today.

For Ströms, the secret of success

has always been similar to that

embraced by Gillblads: to offer only

high-quality, modern goods, a

simple but effective approach that

continues to hold strong. Top

international names from the

luxury market, including Boss, Max

Mara Weekend, Polo Ralph Lauren

and Tommy Hilfiger, can all be

found here, as can the best local

brands, such as Björn Borg and

Tiger of Sweden.

Page 28: SHOP Gothenburg SS16

28 | FEATURES

Above: inside Ströms department store

For Ulf Rudhag, managing

director at Ströms, it is not just the

products but the service that sets

them apart. ‘We aim to have nothing

less than the best customer service in

Scandinavia,’ he states confidently.

As well as being served by expert

salespeople and a team of skilled

tailors, the department store’s best

customers are classed as VIPs and

treated to special services and events,

a host of which have been scheduled

to celebrate the anniversary this year.

Both stores, in fact, will be

inviting customers old and new to

celebrate with them in 2016. From

shopping events to new brand

launches, each is using its

anniversary to celebrate and

reinforce the great quality and

service that have carried them

through the decades. Gillblads is

renovating its entire space,

beginning with a stylish upgrade to

its well-stocked women’s

department. Ströms will hold special

events, as well as offering discounts

and even giveaways.

So what do the next 150 years

promise for these two Gothenburg

stalwarts? For Olsson, the winning

formula that Gillblads has developed

doesn’t need changing, it just needs

to adapt to the times. ‘We will

continue to strive to deliver the best

personal service … using the latest

techniques combined with a unique

assortment [of products], custom

picked for our clients.’ Rudhag

replies in similar vein: ‘Ströms will

renew itself and always be updated,

but the fundamentals will not

change.’ And neither will the

location. ‘We could hardly move

from a spot that is called ‘Ströms

corner’ by locals!’

WHEELSGothenburg’s food trucks turn lunchtimes into a gourmet experience, says Ashlee Beard

30 | E X PE R I E NCE

The take-away, or ‘gatukök’ as it’s

known in Swedish, has been a part

of Sweden’s food culture since the

early 1950s. Those seeking a quick

food fx will fnd hotdog stands

and falafel kiosks on many a street

corner. However, in a move to up

the city’s culinary game, in 2014

Gothenburg’s council ofered 10

gourmet entrepreneurs permits to

roll into town in a range of central

locations. Today the number of

trucks has more than doubled and

there is even an app, Streetkäk, to

enable customers to track each one.

This summer Götaplatsen, a

busy square in the middle of the

town and one of the most popular

of the 20-plus designated locations

citywide, will once again launch

Street Food Saturdays, a weekly

event that marries food and live

music, evoking a festival feel in the

heart of the city. Reinventing the

idea of fast food with local, seasonal

produce and a gourmet approach,

Gothenburg’s food trucks are

taking lunch to the next level.

serving up their ‘slow’ fast food

somewhere diferent every day,

from a forest clearing, perhaps,

to an ofce. All the ingredients

are local and ethically sourced.

The changing menu is inspired

by seasonal products, but

favourites such as pulled pork

or beef brisket sandwiches,

served with homemade kimchi

and garlic and chili mayonnaise,

have become staples.

Mexican-born Mayra Benítez

Poyo’s original dream was

to open a restaurant serving

ceviche – a traditional Latin

American dish made from

fresh raw fsh – but her culinary

trajectory took a more mobile

route and she instead set up shop

in a truck. Taking the traditional

Mexican recipe as her starting

point, Mayra substitutes fsh

indigenous to her native land

with locally sourced salmon and

cod for a Nordic twist, serving it

with quinoa or coconut rice and

authentic Mexican guacamole.

24: Practice Makes Perfect

Hannah

Lewis

Armani Collezioni

Stylein

Gillblads。

Carl Hilmer

Ströms

Gillblads

Mara Weekend、Polo Ralph

Tiger of Sweden

Ströms

Olsson

TRUE BLUE

With a name like Dr Denim, it’s

no surprise that the Gothenburg-

based lifestyle brand is the place

to head for high-quality and

stylish wardrobe staples in that

most endurably fashionable of

fabrics. This deceptively simple

unisex bomber jacket, for instance,

is typical of its workwear and

streetwear-inspired pieces for men

and women. A modern classic,

which will continue to look good
