While the sage Choni was walking along a road, he saw a man planting a carob tree. Choni asked him: "How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?" "Seventy years," replied the man. Choni then asked: "Are you so healthy a man that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?" The man answered: "I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting for my children." Continuity, the linking of one generation to another and a responsibility to future generations were on full display this past week at our camp’s visiting day. One woman said that she had last been on the campgrounds 38 years ago for a camp clean up day. On Friday, she returned to see her granddaughter. Another woman informed me that she had met her husband some 20 years earlier here at the JCC camp while working as a junior counselor. Her 2 daughters are now enrolled in our camp. In conversation with one of our Unit Directors, who is engaged to be married to a woman he met while working here as a counselor, I learned that all of his friends in his bridal party are people that he met at JCC camp. Finally, a young twenty year old counselor, who, this week, was given the opportunity to serve as the “Unit Director for a day,” when asked about the experience, said that she has been dreaming about becoming a Unit Director since she was six years old and that she still intended to fulfill that dream one day. There are many keys to our camp’s success but surely one of them is that the majority of our counselors began their affiliation here at JCC camp as campers themselves. And like the man who found a fruitful world and who felt a responsibility to plant a carob tree for future generations, our current counselors were nurtured by caring counselors who came before them, and now feel a responsibility to nurture the next generation of JCC campers.
