2019 ASTRO ROCKS FEST
3rd May 2019 REPORT - UPDATE
2019 PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT
1: A SPECIAL GUEST for 2019 is Winthrop Professor Andy Whiteley, who was introduced by
Professor Lyn Beazley AO after the 2018 Astro Rocks Fest. Professor Whiteley will give a
Presentation on Saturday morning 21 September, about the MicroBlitz Citizen Science Project
analysing microbes in the soil. www.microblitz.com.au
• This will include an introductory talk (30 mins) plus ISmins questions plus a viewing of
approximately 40 minutes of the film "Symphony of the Soil."
• This Presentation is the first time Astro Rocks Fest has extended into soils formed from the
rocks. While rocks represent the Abiotic (devoid of life) aspect, the inclusion of soils
represents progression ofAstro Rocks Festto encompassing the Biotic (living organisms)
aspects, which then leads to Cultural aspects. That is, the ABC of geotourism.
• Extending impact of Astro Rocks Fest further into the community, it is intended that
Microblitz Project Manager will visit Mount Magnet to engage local young citizens, prior to
Astro Rocks Fest. Soil samples taken around Mount Magnet will complete the WA project.
"WHAT IS MICROBLITZ? MicroBlitz is big. It's citizen science on a vast scale. It's a crowd - sourced
science project that spans Western Australia. It is globally significant research that will help us
understand and address the big environmental issues of our time. Climate change. Food security.
Water security. And it all starts with the tiniest of nature's building blocks - microbial DNA."
Quote from UWA brochure Microblitz DIG A LITTLE DISCOVER A LOT
Astro Rocks Fest Co-Ordinator Karen Morrissey met with Prof Andy Whiteley at UWA in March 2019 and
included teleconference with Project Manager Deborah Bowie.
2: WIRNDA BARNA ARTISTS and MEMBERS of WA INSPIRED ART QUILTERS will collaborate
to form the 2019 Astro Rocks Fest art exhibition. The quilts will be displayed along with
Wirnda Barna artwork in the WIRNDA BARNAART CENTRE. All exhibited pieces will be for
sale. The quilters will also bring small, low priced quilted items, plus greeting cards with
images of the larger quilts for sale. The Art Quilters have set up their own website,
showing quilts to be exhibited and sold.

Art Exhibition Development; At the GeoparksWA Workshop in November 2018, "Geotourism and
Geoparks: The Cultural Connections" at which (Astro Rocks Fest Co-Ordinator) Karen Morrissey was
presenting, - Pat Forster and Stella King proposed the concept of a quilt exhibition with Indigenous
connections. This in turn developed into a collaborative exhibition with Wirnda Barna artists
following further communication and a meeting in Perth between Pat Forster, quilter colleague,
Wirnda Barna/BLAC CEO Patricia Edwards and Astro Rock Fest Co-Ordinator.
It is envisaged that the quilters will further develop a relationship with the Wirnda Barna
artists and share their quilt art skills.
3: GENERAL PROGRAMMING - with Presenters travelling in to make up the event:
The International Centre Radio Astronomy Research will again oversee the Astrofest
evening. This will include amateur astronomers, Scitech, Fireballs in the Sky, Astronomy
Education Services, Richard Tonello and Astrophotography Exhibition.
ICRAR will manage the Astrophotography Exhibition. [Dr John Goldsmith has stepped
down from his role as Curator of the Exhibition, after ten years.]
ICRAR is working on a new visual presentation, to project astro images onto the squash
court wall facing the oval, with an update of research results coming from SKA and ICRAR.
This will be in place of Moon Viewing, since the moon will be rising later
CHARLIES PIZZA which provided wood fired pizzas for Meeka's Cutback Festival is
available to provide food at Astro Rocks Fest - and will need to know which events/venues
RAMELIUS and BLAC are both willing to provide bus tours to the Mine and Granites
respectively
Richard Tonello will offer a Presentation first thing on Saturday morning after Astrofest.
Fireballs in the Sky - workshop/presentation
Mines Department will support the return of very popular geology expert Michael
Wingate to make a Presentation. Michael Wingate has offered to give a Presentation on
how the age of old rocks are determined and will illustrate this with the age of the
Orbicular Granite.
Michael Wingate will give advice regarding possibility of Mines Department field mapping
geologist who has recently mapped around Mount Magnet - suggesting an interesting
geological locality and lead an excursion to it
Rock Exhibitors: Due to the unsuitability of the rocks being displayed outside (2017) and in
other locations - the Rock Exhibition will return to the ANZAC hall. Feedback from 2018
was to have the Rock Exhibits on display on both Saturday and Sunday.
Professor Ross Dowling has indicated that GeoparksWA will have a stall
There have been other enquiries regarding stalls, however this area (lack of stalls or too
many stalls for the people) remains the weakness of AstroRocks Fest and will require a
process of community (regional) engagement to create attractive, unique saleable items
PCYC have yet to reply regarding the mobile climbing wall.
