From Our Rabbi’s Study
The great count-up is on. As you read this, we Jews are in the process of counting the days, one
after another, from Pesach, our time of Liberation, to Shavuot, our
time of Revelation. This is the time of omer counting when, in remembrance of a
measure of wheat or barley that was brought as a sacrifice in ancient times – the measure was called an omer – we say each night, “Today is the such-and-such day which are so-many weeks and so-many days into [the counting of] the omer.”
So what’s this all about, and why is it so important? I’ve thought about these questions a lot recently, not only about how they affect my life but, more, how they affect us all. The Psalmist proclaims, “Teach us to number our days that we may get us a heart of wisdom (Ps. 90:12).” I can’t help but recall these words each night as I count the days of the omer. This omer-counting is reminding me that our time here is finite. We only have so much of it, and we dare not squander or waste any of it, not even one day. In my youth that never meant very much to me. It does now. There is a lot of work that I want yet to do, and I know now that I don’t have an unlimited amount of time to do it. You know, I’ve learned much these past months of my interim rabbinate to Shir Ami. I came here with the knowledge that my rabbinate here would only last for twelve months. But twelve months? That’s not a lot of time to help a congregation re-envision and create for itself a new and different future, one that will be about what likely will be a new kind of religious and congregational form and way of expression from the past, one that will also possess what it takes to remain relevant as Shir Ami faces the challenges that will inevitably lie before it in the time to come. I had a picture when I arrived here of what these twelve months would look like and what I would do within them to bring my mission to
fruition. Some of it was realistic and began to come about immediately. Some of it got changed as unforeseen situations arose. Some of it, I’m certain, will only happen in the two months remaining. And some of it, as it will turn out, will remain beyond the scope of what is accomplishable in such a short time. However that, for me, has been the great life-lesson of my interim rabbinate. The cookie monster was wrong. None of us can ever get all cookies. On the other hand, as the sage Ben Zoma taught us centuries ago, “It is not incumbent upon you to finish the work; but [at the same time] neither are you free to desist from it (Avot 2:16).” What this omer-counting period is about and what my rabbinate here is teaching me – and this is a lesson for us all – is that as far as our lives are concerned, we are all “interim.” Each day, hour, and minute are precious. And we need seize upon them all to work at the mission of our lifetime...to bring us fulfillment, to bring us happiness, and most of all to bring us, in some way, to a point where we are making the world around us a better place, not only for ourselves but for those who will come after us. May we, to paraphrase the Psalmist, gain wisdom enough to recognize that, and may our blessing be that it comes to pass.

We had a very successful congregational Seder on April 4. Thank you to all of the many people who made it such a meaningful evening. The set-up committee included Iris Frank, Art and Kim Feldstein, Ann Avilles, Rebecca Salzman, Katelyn Johnston, Nancy Siderits, Bob DeSantis, and Sandra Greenfield. Donations were made by the Dunn family, Gdula family, Paula and Harvey Goldberg, Becky Markowitz, Alan and Melody Rosenberg, Jeanne Winerip, Donna and Bob DeSantis, Art and Kim Feldstein, Women of Shir Ami, Men’s Club of Shir Ami, Discretionary funds of Cantor Elson, Rabbi Eric Goldberg and Rabbi Kosovske. These donations made it possible to keep the cost of the Seder reasonable so that everyone who wanted to attend was able to do so.
Special thanks to Ann Avilles who handpainted the Kiddush and Miriam cups, Alan Sheinberg who donated the wine, Elliott Rosenthal who prepared and donated the haroset, and Julie Hershgordon who managed our registration, phone calls, etc.
Finally, thanks to Rabbi Kosovske and Cantor Elson for conducting such a wonderful service.

As another week comes to a close, and we prepare for Shabbat, we all need to find and press our reset button. This can sometimes be difficult to do as we carry the weight of our own world around with us.
Join us Friday, May 15th for this year’s Anna Gever Music Shabbat – a Shabbat experience that explores spirituality through music, image, stories, and prayer. Music is a part of us and Sabbath for the Soul helps take the Reform Jewish liturgy into the 21st century. Ross M. Levy and the Levites take familiar melodies from our Friday night service and put them on top of an irresistible groove. Elements of soul, rock, jazz and folk music are combined into an energetic fusion that is at once spiritual, joyful and may even get your hips shaking.
Our service begins Friday evening at 7:30 PM and will help guide our congregation to a spiritual and emotional reset.
ABOUT ROSS M. LEvY: Ross has been a singer and songwriter of both Jewish and secular content since his early teens. Ross holds a degree in Judaic Studies from the University of Hartford, and worked as an educator at Temple Beth Israel in West Hartford, where he fell in love with teaching. He believes it is his job to give his students a variety of experiences, and works to make religious school fun, exciting, and most of all, relevant. In the Philadelphia area he has worked as the Director of Student Life of the Jewish Community High School of Gratz College. He has recorded two studio albums: “What Goes Up,” and “Where the Future Lies.” He has also been featured on four of the URJ Ruach Series compilation CD’s of new music, and he has performed at a number of national conferences for the URJ and NFTY, as well as for synagogues and organizations across the country. He was the winner of the Jewish American Idol competition at the CAJE conference in Burlington, vermont and is a featured artist on Jewish Rock Radio.

Whew… are we tired! The Shir Ami ELC just got back from a wonderful trip to Eretz Yisrael – The land of Israel. We flew on a plane together while singing Hatikvah and learning some fun facts about Israel. Once we got there, each classroom was set up as a city in Israel. Our teachers used so much creativity as we visited Hadassah Hospital and made our own Chagall windows, climbed Masada, joined the IDF (army), ate humus and oranges on a Kibbutz, found gems in an archeological dig, put notes in the Kotel (wall), and went to the Dead Sea for a sink or float lesson and a spa treatment. It was a fantastic experience for the children as they learned about Israel the way young children need to learn – through doing. It’s never too early to introduce children to new cultures and countries. More important for us, we want to begin to instill a love for Israel within our children that we hope will stay within them for the rest of their lives.

It was a special Sunday for Sr and Jr Shafty working to Make A
Difference. A group of 30 teens came together to create tactile boards
for the visually impaired. The boards were designed using objects
such as slinkies, beads, bells, sponges, etc. With our help, teachers
are now able to leave these boards at their students’ homes after their
learning session. All boards has a name of the creator in braille which
was typed by the young boy who visited us that day. We loved talking
to him and watching him on his braille typewriter. After our morning
mitzvah we traveled to SkyZone for an hour of fun and play!

Lunch and Learn
Two Jews, Three Opinionspresented by Rabbi Paula Goldberg
Some say Jews love to argue, to disagree, to debate. Everyone has heard “two Jews, three opinions.” What does that really mean? Do we really love argument? With whom and about what do we debate? Does argument mean we are angry? Can we argue with God? Does disagreement lead to lack of faith or increased faith? Where does this characterization come from?
If it is true that we never tire of arguing, what does that say about us? About our ability to form cohesive communities? to come to consensus about anything? come and join the discussion, sharpen your questions, discover new ones, and please -- bring your opinion!
Lunch & Learn programs are of fered on the third Thursday of each month. Each program is a self-contained course of study from 12:15 to 1:30pm.
A cold buf fet lunch is available, star ting at 11:45am. Pre-registration is not required. Shir Ami members are asked to contribute $7.00 and non-members

The Case Against Ethel and Julius Rosenberg
Presensted by Bea Streitfeld
In one of the most controversial capital punishment trials of the 20th Century,
a man and his wife (Ethel and Julius Rosenberg) were charged, tried,
convicted and executed for the crime of “conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States” at a
time when the COLD WAR was just heating up. Although their co-defendants in the trial received sentences of 15 to 30 years in prison, the Rosenbergs became the
first U.S. civilians to be executed for espionage.

YAHRZEITSOn the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is one thing we do; the Kaddish spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday evening before the yahrzeit. You are encouraged to honor your loved one with a living memorial - a contribution to one of our special Temple funds.

which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.
Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA.
