It is located in the northwest of the African continent, next to the Alboran Sea and off the coast of Granada and Almería. The city layout is arranged in a wide semicircle around the beach and the Port of Melilla, on the eastern side of the peninsula of Cape Tres Forcas, at the foot of Mount Gurugú and the mouth of the Río de Oro, 1 metre above sea level. The urban nucleus was originally a fortress built on a peninsular mound about 30 m in height.

The quality and the environment

The commitment to quality and the environment is already a reality in the port of Melilla. In this regard, we have increased efforts and adopted measures, initiatives and innovative approaches, not only to achieve strict compliance with existing legislation, but also to ensure our commitment to sustainability management much more ambitious.

For example, we have worked hard to develop and review procedures in accordance with ISO 14001:2004, and have developed outstanding initiati-ves such as the dredging of the marina funds or the creation and management of collection points for waste collection. We have also launched a pilot project to minimize noise pollution and reduce emissions of CO2 emitted by engines of ships moored in the harbor.

Pioneer in safety

In security matters we are not only one of the safest ports in the Mediterranean and Europe, but also we are pioneers in developing a plan for the protection of ships and port facilities, in compliance with R.D. 1617/2007. This is an ambitious plan that has made a significant investment in infras-tructure and security, among other initiatives and actions, including a new control center, installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras loca-ted throughout the campus port and an access control system to manage the flow of people and goods, reinforced perimeter fencing of areas to limit access to certain venues.

In addition to the huge importance the cohabitation of four cultures contributes to the present of Melilla, one must not forget the privile-ged historical situation maintained by the city, and which has made it possible to retain the important heritages bequeathed by Phoeni-cians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines and Arabs. Al of this has made Melilla a singular architectural Museum which is as diverse as it is exotic and different.

The Old Town of Melilla, or “El Pueblo”, as it is affectionately known by Melillans, and which many also know nowadays as The Citadel, encompasses the fortified enclosure whose construction began in the fifteenth century, on the rack that served as a base for the old Rusadir of Phoenicians and Romans. This monumental whole is composed of four areas separated by a moat or a narrow pass. The first three ad-vance into the sea while the fourth does so into the continent. Among the latter´s outstanding features, one should mention the Rosario and Victorias Fortresses, from where the shots of the “El Caminante” can-non were fired, which determined the present limits of Melilla.

Right in front of Las Culturas Square, in the city centre, we find the nineteenth-century Melilla composed of the small, stylish neighbou-rhoods of the San Carlos Fortresses, the San Miguel Fortress, the Ci-tadel and Mantelete. The modern city of Melilla has a very special charm. The beautiful España Square, presided over by the Assembly Palace, is the nerve centre of the city of Melilla and therefore an area of much animation .
