Romanian Shipbuilders Association – ANCONAV –, represent directly more than 95% of the Romanian

Shipbuilding production and the majority of the producers for ships equipments and accessories.

ANCONAV is a member of the Community of European Shipyards’ Associations – CESA – and recognized at

other international organizations in the field.

The Romanian shipyards supply more than 17000 direct jobs for a high skilled labour force and more than

60% of the delivered vessels is produce by a vast network of system, equipments and service providers.

Altogether, the maritime manufacturers are generating an important turnover, and the deliveries are

oriented for export in a proportion of more than98%.

For obtaining these results, the shipbuilding industry faced the problems of an economy in transition,

being obvious the necessity of restructuring of property and development of a private sector. In this aspect the

Romanian shipbuilding industry has been one of the most dynamic sector.

But for long term, to sustain this trend, means to increase the competitiveness and this to be achieved

primarily through action undertaken by the shipyards and related enterprises themselves.

The restructuring was strongly necessary for improving technologies and for this reason, modernization

and consequently he increasing of productivity, were, and are in the future, the main targets of the investments

to be achieved by the enterprises.

The financial efforts for updating technologies are done with the enterprises own possibilities, without any

help, asked from the state, even we consider as a necessity the state aid for innovation, development and export

financing, as per OECD and WTO rules.

No investment are provided for the basic facilities, i.e. for increasing capacities.

We hope for the future, to maintain and to develop our position in the worldwide shipbuilding market, in

a fair competition, for the benefit of our clients and our enterprises

Romania’s access to the Black Sea and the Danube course of more than 1000 km on the territory of Romania

contributed to the development of shipbuilding more than 160 years ago.

The history of many present shipyards began in the 19th century under the form of shipbuilding workshops:

(Brãila, Galaþi, Turnu-Severin, Giurgiu, a.s.o.).

The latest Romanian shipyards are those of Mangalia and Tulcea, built in the seventies, that period being

characterized by investments and upgrading work in all shipyards.

The long tradition of shipbuilding led to the development of a higher education system in the field aiming to

ensure highly skilled specialists, a strong research and a design database. The Shipbuilding Department of

“Lower Danube” University, the ICEPRONAV Research & Design Institute and ship designing offices are situated

mainly in Galaþi.

There are 10 main shipyards on the Black Sea Coast and along the Danube (see Table 1).

For the supply of parts and accessories used in the shipbuilding field, a large range of equipment is made in

Romania:

- Diesel-engines and diesel generating sets,

- Propellers for ships,

- Welding materials,

- Deck equipment,

- Electric pumps,.

- Electrical equipments,

- Anchors and chains, a.s.o

The shipbuilding and repair yards, the main makers of equipment and research system are well distributed along

the country / river and seacoasts (see the map here enclosed).

The diversity and the quality of our

products are the basis of a continuous and intense

collaboration with partners from Holland, Germany,

Austria and Belgium. This collaboration brought us

to an important market quota in Holland for the

imports of ships designed to the navigation on the

inland waters.

In the past 13 years we have delivered 170

ships for the western European market, starting with

two ships per year in 1992 and presently reaching to

a yearly rhythm of delivery of approximately 17 - 19

ships, fact which assures the total covering of the

production capacity of the SC Santierul Naval

Orsova SA.

Once with starting of the hull construction

for export purposes, the society modernized

continuously its work technology, investing

important amounts for purchasing machines,

installations and modern work devices and gear, the

amount designed to the main investments being of

over 4 millions EURO only in the last four years.

In the shipyard is activating a design team

on computer and there is also a technological

design workshop, able to face the latest

requirements on the market. The society is

certificated by Germanischer Lloyd with ISO 9001.

According to our marketing policy, we have

established as a main target the maintaining of the

actual market quota in the area designed for

Holland and Belgium.

As a perspective for the future years it is

intended the completion of the constructed hulls

and starting of the execution of short-sea going

vessels.

As recognition of our excellent image on

the West - European market, and of the quality

system implemented, the Society was awarded with

three prestigious international awards: the Golden

Star in Paris 2002, the Platinum Arch of Europe in

Frankfurt 2003 and the International Quality Crown

Award in London 2005.

CURRENT WORK

Starting 2003, less than one year after the

privatization, Santierul Naval Constanta SA' efforts

to claim a place among the leading international

shipyards have been rewarded: the yard has

recently signed contracts for the construction of 6

firm and 4 option vessels 41,000 dwt Product/

Chemical Tankers IMO 3 type.

The basic conceptual design has been developed by

us in co-operation with owners, oil major companies

and research institutes, while the class design and

fabrication drawings are in yard's responsibility on

the purpose of having a modern, safe and versatile

vessel.

The package of equipment, comprising mainly West-

European makers and the financing of the whole

project are handled by Santierul Naval Constanta SA

itself through its specialized departments.

Investment programs

An investment program has already been

implemented and more than US$ 8,5 million were

spent for upgrading the existing shot-blasting and

priming equipment, as well as cherry-pickers, for the

acquisition of a brand new blasting and painting

work-shop and of other tools and equipments.

Another investments are under way and more than

US$ 2,5 million will be invested in design software

for hull, piping, electrical and outfitting modules, as

well as for the implementation of a reliable resource

planning system. ERP (Enterprise Resource

Planning) is to integrate the above mentioned

software, as well as the existing systems based on

Autocad, Tribon and Primavera Enterprise

applications.

individual work stations connected in a

local network by means of optical fibre,

UTP cable and xdsl modems.

- More than 80% of the individual work

stations are equipped with Pentium IV

processors and minimum 256 MB Ram / 40

GB HDD and are connected by four

different network servers: Windows 2000-

Exchange 2000 / Windows 2003 / Linux

Debian / Novel 4.11.

- The data are stored in "doc" and "excel"

files, "fox" tables and SQL2000 database.

The IT system is using the following

applications:

- For design activities: TRIBON M2 with

The installation allows also coating of the steel

strips with

non-ferrous materials (cooper or brass).

The thermal deposit coating method used, with the

improvements made by our specialists, ensures an

uniformity

of the coating layer on both sides of the strip and

thickness

comparable with the ones obtained by electrolytic

deposit.

The manufacturing of the cold rolled steel strips

with thickness starting

from 0.06mm is done with a performant quarto

--reversible rolling mill, the

controls and the survey of the parameters being

computer assisted.

The physical and mechanical characteristics of the

strips are obtained by

thermal treatment in bell type ovens controlled by a

process computer.

The slitting lines allows us to obtain a big

dimensional range of finished

products, delivered in protective packing, resistant

to manipulation and

transport.

Using the computer assisted control and through a

severe technological

discipline we can ensure for our products the

dimensional tolerances,

smoothness and aspect imposed by the most

exigent standards.
