On Friday night, between 10.00pm and 10.30pm, the cash machine at the HSBC Bank on the corner of Central Parade was struck with such force, possibly with a hammer, that the display turned a completely different colour, rendering it unreadable to customers. Youngsters from the Shildon adventure group, 'The Pilgrim Club,' were rewarded for their efforts and achievements during 2007 by being chosen as Sedgefield Awards for Sensational Youth “Club of the Year.” The SASY Awards, held at Ferryhill Leisure Centre last Friday night, celebrate the achievements of inspirational youths in the area. Ben Maddison and Adam Churm received the award from Sedgefield Borough Councillor and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Barbara Graham. Club founder, John Cutting, went on to say, “Receiving this award has been excellent for the club members and a well-deserved recognition of their achievements." "We are very proud of the youngsters and what they have accomplished. The club can only provide the opportunities, its then up to them to make the most of them." Amongst a string of accomplishments, youngsters from the club completed a 174 mile Hadrian’s Wall Cycleway challenge from Ravensglass on the Cumbria coast to the Roman Fort at South Shields. They also started training for the 1,000 mile charity End2End cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End, taking place this coming August. 2008 is all set to be another exciting year for the club. Funding from Sedgefield Borough Council’s KOOLKA$H awards has enabled the club to renew its membership with Thornton Stewart Sailing Club, and will again be providing sailing opportunities for local youngsters. The club has also agreed a site in Hamsterley Forest with the Forestry Commission to provide a Forest School facility. Further bike rides and canoeing and kayaking opportunities are also planned. Lindsey Denham, 19 from Shildon, was also nominated for a SASY Award, but just missed out on the title of 'Young Learner of the Year' to Maxwell Metcalfe of West Cornforth. 'THE PILGRIM CLUB' ARE 'CLUB OF THE YEAR' Police have been informed and repairs are now completed. Nothing was taken from the machine, as it was impossible to gain access, however it is unknown whether the incedent was an attempted theft or simply mindless vandalism. Anyone with further information can contact Shildon Police Station on 0845 60 60 365. The Family of the late John M. Smith (Editor) would like to thank the Rev. Rupert Kalus, all Town Council staff, The Co-op Funeral Service, Everyone at the Shildon ‘Town Crier,’ ‘Ferryhill Chapter’ and the ‘Spennynews’ and all people, too numerous to mention, who sent their kind thoughts and condolences at this sad time. Christian, Charlotte, Toby and Luke. The combined winners from the SASY Awards last Friday Night ASSAULT CASE ADJOURNED The case involving a Shildon man was adjourned by local Magistrates last week in order to allow a Legal Aid application to be made on his behalf. 18 year-old Callum Jon Nixon, of Dalton Crescent in Shildon, was scheduled to appear before the South Durham Magistrates sitting at Newton Aycliffe in order to answer a charge of 'assault occasioning actual bodily harm'. It is alleged that Nixon committed the offence in Shildon on New Year's Day this year. Mr. Rory Todd, the Solicitor acting upon behalf of the Defendant, made the successful plea to the Court for the adjournment and the case will now return to the Newton Aycliffe Court on the April 30th. The 'Town Crier' would like to encourage all groups and associations in Shildon and the surrounding areas to forward us news of any events, competitions or celebrations they may be hosting or attending. SHILDON MAN TOFACE MAGISTRATES'

COURT TRIALAfter a Shildon man entered'Not Guilty' pleas to threecharges when he appearedbefore local Magistrates' lastweek, a date was duly fixedfor his trial. The Defendant, 42 year-old Clive JermaineBrennan, of Scott Street, appeared before the SouthDurham Magistrates whowere si t t ing at NewtonAycliffe.Brennan denied charges of'theft of a bag of renderring','breach of a RestrainingOrder' and 'criminal damage'.All three offences arealleged to have occurred inNewton Aycliffe, the 'theft'in mid-March this year andthe remaining two in lateJanuary. The Restraining Orderbreach allegedly occurredwhen Brennancommunicated with andwent to the home of theinjured party, the Orderbeing imposed uponBrennan in mid-June, 2006,by the South DurhamMagistrates. The alleged 'theft' chargerelates to a bag of renderring, whilst the damage, valued at£100, is said to have beencommitted to the window adoor, the property ofSedgefield Borough Council.

Mrs. Adrienne Harris ,appearing on behalf of theCrown Prosecution Service, suggested to the si t t ingMagistrates that this was acase which was suitable to bedealt with at a Magistrates'Court.Mrs. Harris added that theDefendant, Brennan, andthe injured party had beenin a somewhat volati lerelationship for some time. After the sitting Magistratesagreed to accept jurisdictionin the matter, Mr. BruceCunningham, the Solicitorappearing on behalf ofBrennan, told the Court thatthe Defendant, at his trial, intended to deny all threeallegations. The trial date was duly fixedas July 17th at the NewtonAycliffe Magistrates' Court, however the Magistratesagreed to a CaseManagement Hearing beinglisted for the June 11th.Brennan was granted anextension of hisunconditional bail until thetrial date and was told thathis attendance at the CaseManagement Hearing wouldonly be necessary if, in themeantime, he decided tochange his plea to 'Guilty' inrespect of any of the threecharges.

Dear Editor,11 Months ago I moved toShildon, where I do find thepeople very friendly. What really annoys me is,that in the time I have livedhere my garden and garagehave been broken into 3times. The latest time beingin the early hours ofSaturday 19th April. The first and second timewe had golf clubs, 2 bikesand roller blades, even ourchildrens pet guinea pigswere taken. On Saturday, we discovered

our children's sea-saw andswing with new baby seathad been taken. It was liftedover a 6ft fence.I presume it was someone'sbirthday and the theivesneeded a gift. It 's quitedist inguished. I t 's handpainted red and white witha red sea-saw and a blue andorange baby swing seat.If you can see it from yourwindow, please telephonethe Town Crier to let themknow, as my little boy hasn'tgot his present any more.
