What Are Shield Volcanoes?

• Made from course of eruption• Broad and gentle slopes• Made by fluid base lava• Flat domical shape• Lava flows from all directions• Has a central vent or groups of vents

What kind of lava are produced?

• Vent magma• Slope of Lava• Crater• Magma Chamber

Mount Kilauea

• One of the worlds largest active craters • Found on the Big Island of Hawaii • The youngest volcano in Hawaii• Current eruption January 3,1983 called Pu’u’O’o (Poo‐oo Ohh‐ohh)

• Lasted two centuries

Questions1. How many active volcanoes are there on our planet?2. How do volcanoes decrease global temperatures?3. How can some volcanoes instead of decreasing global temperatures,

increase them?• Answer 1: The exact number of active volcanoes is unknown because

volcano is a very broad term and it depends on the type of volcano. There are probably millions of volcanoes on earth.

• Answer 2: Volcanoes produce large amounts of carbon dioxide which covers the earth and prevents radiation from the sun to hit the earth creating  temperatures to drastically drop.

• Answer 3: They increase intense sunlight and trap infrared heat energy creating global warming.
