Convention badges must be worn at all times •while in the convention areas of the hotel, and to all convention events. Each person is issued one badge. Badges may not be switched from person to person. If you lose a badge, and are unable to prove proof of purchase, you will have to purchase a new badge. So please, do not lose your badge during the convention.

All event and program rooms have a limited •capacity, enforced by the Fire Marshal. Even though your badge is needed to attend all convention functions, it does not guarantee you access to every event if the room has reached it’s maximum capacity.

Your badge does not guarantee availability •of autographs and signings. There may be additional fees for autographs, and those are NOT covered by your badge.

Smoking, Food, and Beverages are not •permitted in the convention area or event rooms.

Alcoholic beverages are only permitted within •the hotel’s designated areas. Please be respectful.

Please limit rude, obnoxious, and/or offensive •behavior and language to areas where polite fans and hotel guests will not be affected.

Neither Shevacon or the hotel is responsible •for any lost, stolen, or damaged property. Or for any injuries sustained during the convention.

No “camping” in the hallways or any other area •of the hotel is allowed. Please rent a room, or you will be asked to leave the hotel. If the hotel is sold out, there may be other rooms available in the area.

Children under 10 years of age must be •accompanied by a parent at all times. We do not offer any childcare. So please be aware of the location of your children at all times.

We reserve the right to ask you to leave the •convention if any of the above rules are not

strictly followed. Please adhere to the rules above, use common sense, and a good time can be had by all.

Cameras, food, beverages, smoking, weapons, •and large packages are prohibited in the Art Show. These items may be checked at the Art Staff table when you enter the room. If the item(s) is/are valuable, please leave them in your room or care. Shevacon is not responsible for lost or forgotten items that are left in the Art Room.

Those who attend in costume, please •remember that there are public nudity laws in Virginia. Please wear appropriate clothing at all times.

Shevacon does not support the sale of illegally •reproduced items. Sellers are responsible for verifying the legality of their merchandise according to local, state, and federal laws.

The firing of projectile weapons is strictly•forbidden.

Use of weapons to threaten, annoy, or •intimidate any attendee or staff member is strictly forbidden.

Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed •at all times. There are no exception to this rule in the convention areas. The only time and unbound weapon is allowed, is for the Costume Contest, and that is for contestants ONLY.

Unsheathed weapons in the convention areas •will be confiscated and held at Registrationuntil you surrender your membership.

We do not wish to restrict replica weapons that •are part of your costumes. (swords, blasters, lightsabers, etc.) However, if you attend with the real-world replica weapon such as an M-16, Uzi, or something similar - then our Staff folks might have an issue with that and will need to inspect the replica to ensure the safety of the other convention attendees.

Basically, just use common sense and •everythingshouldbejustfine.:)

FAQ’SWhat is Shevacon?SheVaCon is a three (3) day convention that is run by fans for fans. We celebrate all things from the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror genres, as well as all things in between. It’s a convention where you can meet many wonderful and talented guest authors and artists, and even a few celebrity guests as well. In addition to our guests, we also offer many fun and interesting activities. Discussion panels, Demonstrations, Workshops, Costume Contest, Art Show, Dealers/Exhibitors room, Gaming, Fan Groups, and so much more. We consider ourselves a ‘multimedia’ convention since we cover so many different genres, and include a wide variety of activities and events for the whole family to enjoy.

SheVaCon stands for: Shenandoah Valley Convention. SheVaCon’s humble beginnings started in 1993 in Staunton, VA - but has now grown up to be the premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention in Southwestern Virginia. And we are honored to have you join us for our 20th year, and hope to see you in the coming years as we continue.

How Long Does Shevacon Run?SheVaCon runs from February 8-10, 2013. While specific rooms such as the Art Show and Dealers/Exhibitors rooms will close nightly at their speci-fied hours; select panels, screenings, and special events will continue into the evening.

Who’s the Organizer of Shevacon?SheVaCon, Inc. is the parent company of SheVaCon, and it’s volunteer Staff organize SheVaCon each and every year.

Who Needs A Badge/Pass?Any and all attendee’s eight (8) years of age or older. There are 3-Day badges for Adults & Children (8-12), as well as Day Passes/Badges forAdults & Children. ** - Note all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and/or grown-up. Badges must be worn at all times and easily visible while attending the convention.

Can I Take Photos?Yes, well... for the most part. SheVaCon encourages it’s attendee’s to take still photographs and videos of their convention experience. However, there are times and places that any type of photography is prohibited like in the Art Show, and during certain workshops and/or panels. Also, please under-stand that some guests may not pose for photographs with fans. Guests have the right to their privacy, and if they ask not to have their photograph taken, please respect their wishes.

Will I Be On Camera or Photographed?SheVaCon attracts local, and national fans and media personnel who all love the Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Horror genres, so it is very likely that you will be photographed or recorded. By attending SheVaCon, you give your consent to be photographed and appear on camera.

Greetings Guests and Friends,Welcome to Shevacon! If you are returning friend, welcome back. If you are new to the con, you’re in for a unique and delightful experience. We are celebrating our 21st anniversary! That’s right, 21 years of all things sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and paranormal. It’s been a blast.

As always Shevacon is a convention for the fans, by the fans and it will continue to be the same. This is my second year as your chairwoman and I’m very honored to present this year’s convention to you.

Once again we have the honor of being housed by the magnificent Hotel Roanoke. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all of their generosity and say that I look forward to many, many years of Hotel Roanoke being a part of Shevacon Inc.

One change you may notice is the increase in the paranormal programming. As interest for this genre grows, we grow along with it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the paranormal guests and groups for all the work that they have accomplished in helping to make this convention grow. I would like to recognize Eastern States Paranormal for their sponsorship of the costume contest. And I would also like to thank Jenny Stewart for all of her advertising and other generous donations that she has contributed to this convention.

Aaron AllstonWriter Guest of Honor

Aaron Allston (born 1960 in Corsicana, Texas) is an American novelist of many science fiction

books, notably Star Wars novels.[1] His works include those of the X-Wing series: Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist, Solo Command, Starfighters of Adumar. He has also written two entries in the New Jedi Order series: Enemy Lines I: Rebel Dream, and Enemy Lines II: Rebel Stand. Allston wrote three of the

nine Legacy of the Force novels: Betrayal, Exile, and Fury, and three of the nine Fate of the Jedi novels: Outcast, Backlash and Fate of the Jedi 7.

Joe ChinMedia Guest of Honor

A self-described “happy go lucky guy,” grew up in a close-knit family of 11 and worked primarily

with the family’s b u s i n e s s e s . His interests in paranormals date back to his teenage years. Growing up, Joe remembers that the third floor of his tenement house was always lively with instances of unexplained paranormal activity.

And although he experienced the supernatural as a

youngster, he had no idea that people looked for the paranormal until he met Jason Hawes. Months after meeting Jason, he was asked to join the group and several cases later he is still a part of the thriving team.

“Joining Ghost Hunters International has given me the opportunity to travel the world and push my passion for the paranormal to new levels,” said Joe.

Since joining the team, Joe has cultivated what he refers to as a “skeptical curious side,” that spurs him to want to get to the bottom of things. He also relates this innate curiosity to being a computer technician, a trade he delves into in his spare time. When working with computers he

always has to figure out what the problem is and how to resolve it as quickly as possible—similar to the work that he and the other ghost hunters do.

When he isn’t investigating cases, Joe enjoys computer gaming, movies, outdoor activities, learning about crypto zoology and spending time with his family.

Beck SeasholsArtist Guest of Honor

Beck is an artist, illustrator, cartoonist, author and super cool sketch card artist. She’s written

and illustrated a children’s book and recently began drawing the art for a new web comic “Sweeten Village”. She has been a freelance artist for over 10 years and has worked with super awesome companies like: Lucasfilm, Topps, Breygent, 5finity, Cult-Stuff, a variety of rubber stamping companies and

private collectors of all things cute and cuddly. She hosts a twice weekly artcast on Ustream where she draws commissions, sketch cards and sexy pinups (with the occasional kitten and lots of glitter!).

Beck also thinks wiener dogs are awesome and cats wish they could be that cool. She also collects children’s books, stuffed animals, freckles and pet hair. And one day, Beck will have a pet Wampa of her very own!

Jenny StewartParanormal Guest of Honor

Jenny Stewart is a paranormal investigator, psychic, medium, radio personality and writer. She is recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities within the study of Real Time audio ITC with her extensive research, and knowledge of equipment coined the ghost box.

Jenny founded P a r a n o r m a l

Research and Resource Society in 2008, with over a decade devoted to paranormal research she wanted to create an organization to provide education to anyone seeking it.

She is the director of PRRS with Chapters throughout the country.

The case later became a subject of Animal Planets hit series The Haunted. The episode titled The Ghost Box prophecies, shared the three warnings Jenny received from the ghost box while conducting the Waldorf investigation. All three warnings came true within six months of receiving them, including one that warned of murder. The Ghost Box Prophecies was the highest rated episode in the life of the series.

Jenny’s’ first book Secret Sacrifices; The Henryton Project, based on the five month investigation and research project she and her team conducted of an abandoned African American Tuberculosis hospital located in Maryland. Jenny came to believe that the spirits within the complex had a story that needed to be told. After having several experiences and extensive research of the location she uncovered documents to validate that the former TB patients were mistreated, as well as used for experiments in an effort to find a treatment for tuberculosis. The book is due to be released in late 2012.

Being a communication major Jenny started utilizing internet radio in 2008 when PRRS radio was born as a platform to help further educate others about the supernatural, communicating with the other side and how to shows on paranormal research.

In late 2011, along with her husband Dave, ParaMania Radio network was launched, an internet talk radio site that allows others to host a show on various subjects. Not only a co-owner but a host of three shows, Attached, a show devoted to educating others about spirit attachments, the highly rated Distorted Frequency, a show Jenny host with her husband that shares their knowledge of the ghost box and gives the listeners the chance to experience a live session conducted each week on air, On a road called Healing is the latest in her show line up and is a spiritual, healing based show covering a different topic each week. In the short time since its launch, ParaMania Radio network has reached a ranking of one of the premiere internet talk radio networks in the industry.

David Bartell

David Bartell has a bachelors degree in astrophysics from the University of Virginia,

and a masters certificate in project management from George Washington University. He is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and is an active scuba divemaster. He is a project manager

with a large technology company, and resides in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.

His award-winning stories have been published regularly in Analog Science Fiction Science Fact and several anthologies since 2005. His stories currently appear in the anthologies MAN-KZIN WARS XIII and INTO THE NEW MILLENNIUM: TRAILBLAZING TALES FROM ANALOG SCIENCE FICTION AND FACT, 2000 – 2010. Both of these are available on Amazon. Other previously published stories are available on Amazon, Smashwords, and iTunes.

In the Fall of 2012 he contributed writing to and appeared on the National Geographic Channel docu-drama “Evacuate Earth”, exploring the possibility of evacuating the Earth in the face of a holocaust.

In 2011, he appeared on The Discovery Channel on the Curiosity program “Alien Invasion: Are We Ready?” (UK title “When Aliens Attack”.) Hosted by Michelle Rodriguez and featuring experts such as Michio Kaku, Seth Shostak, and Anne Simon, this program offered a more realistic invasion scenario than is usually portrayed by Hollywood. David now boasts a Kevin Bacon number of 3!

However, finishing college and earning a living came first. Accordingly, Betty spent nearly 30 years working in the computer field.

In April 2010, she attained her lifelong dream by walking away from her daytime job and becoming

a full-time writer of Science Fiction and Fantasy. She writes every day, and keeps a record of her daily word count on a spreadsheet.

In her spare time, she likes to visit with her nephews and nieces, surf the Internet, celebrate Jewish religious holidays, and watch the big screen. She seldom watches television any more, except for favorite old movies.

Daniel Silverman

Daniel Silverman was born deep in the American south, but grew up and spent most of his youth

in various states including Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. Throughout his life and military career, he even had the opportunity to live and visit overseas in such countries as the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. But his

fondest memories were of his high school days living in Cincinnati, Ohio, romping around with his friends and scraping together enough pennies to buy dinner at Skyline Chili. He spent a good many weekends wrecking havoc playing D&D, devouring large sums of Coke-a-Cola and pizza, and reading any and all sci-fi/fantasy novels he could get his hands on. As a result of his love of reading and vivid imagination, Daniel had always wanted to write a novel. But the cares of life seemed to keep him from ever realizing that goal.

Not long after high school, Daniel went to serve his country in the US Marines and is a Desert Storm veteran. After being honorably discharged, he went on to pursue a career in art. He has created graphics for everything from traditional portraits, to book covers and film posters, and even real-time 3D models and environments for games and business applications. He currents owns and operates Enupnion, a graphic design studio.

But even though he has always loved his art, Daniel never forgot his dream of writing. In 2009 he decided to finally take the plunge and make his dream a reality. Grabbing pen and paper (literally!) he began to pen the words to the prologue of Broken Dreams, the first book in The Dreamshift Chronicles Trilogy. Years of pent up ideas and creativity came spilling forth on the pages and soon a story began to take on a life of its own.

Broken Dreams represents a beginning. More books are to follow. For once he had put words

Janine Spendlove

Janine K. Spendlove is a KC-130 pilot in the United States Marine Corps. Her bestselling

Rob West

Rob West, though some people call him SMOF, is a resident of the beautiful mountains of Wise

Virginia. In this quiet little mountain town he writes his stories when he isn’t obeying every command of his three cat overlords. He currently has two erotic fantasy/horror short stories published in anthologies. The

first one is titled “Princess Illia” and is in the, currently kindle only, anthology “The Dark Hunger: A Paranormal Erotic Compendium” by Candy Crum. The second is titled “The Truth of the Hunt” which is in the anthology “Darkest Desires” by Hot Ink Press. This is coming out in October. Currently he is working on a third erotic story, and there will likely be many more in the future.He didn’t set out to be a writer of such stories. It just kind of landed in his lap one day when a friend suggested he give it a try. He is currently working on a YA novel series about a girl who meets a group of fairies. It is currently in editing but he hopes to have it in some published form within the next year or two. Also he has in the works a vampire story, but this story is still in a very early stage. Rob has one other story available to the public. It is a non-erotic short story that was a chapter in a wonderful web series called “Wishworld.” The chapter is titled “The Crystal Princess.” Unfortunately this series was discontinued but the work can be found at www.dolari.org/ww/ . It’s worth a look even in its unfinished state.

Rob got into writing through his love of mythical creatures of all shapes and sizes. Some have called him a scholar of such beings though he himself wouldn’t say it. When he isn’t writing his stories he is often visiting other worlds through the Stargate, or exploring the mountains of Skyrim. He has been attending Shevacon for the past 4 years where he has learned a lot about writing and how to be an author. Having made many friends there, and gotten many books signed, he looks forward to the chance to give something back.

Steve White

Steve White was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1946 and served as a Naval Intelligence officer in the

M e d i t e r r a n e a n and in the Vietnam War Zone. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and an associate member of the Virginia Bar. In addition to the best-selling “Starfire” military science fiction series with

David Weber, he has written several popular science fiction adventure novels for Baen. They include the trilogy comprising The Disinherited, Legacy and Debt of Ages, which combine fast-paced space opera with Arthurian mythology. He has also written the galaxy-spanning adventure Prince of Sunset, and its sequel Emperor of Dawn, the secret-history science fiction novel The Prometheus Project, the high fantasy novel Demon’s Gate, and the time travel adventure Blood of the Heroes. His most recent solo novels are Saint Antony’s Fire, an alternate-history fantasy set in Elizabethan times, and Wolf Among the Stars, a sequel to his earlier science fiction novel Eagle Against the Stars. Extremis, a new novel in the “Starfire” series, this time in collaboration with Chuck Gannon, was released in May 2011. Sunset of the Gods, the second novel in the “Temporal Regulatory Authority” series of time travel novels that began with Blood of the Heroes, is due for release this month, and a third novel, Pirates of the Timestream (in which the time travelers meet the real pirates of the Caribbean) is now in the pipeline. Steve lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is married and has three daughters, the youngest of whom he and his wife found and adopted in Russia… but that’s another story.

Leona Wisoker

Leona Wisoker writes and edits fantasy and science fiction. She has placed stories in

publications ranging from Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine to Michael Hanson’s ongoing Sha’Daa a n t h o l o g i e s . The first novel in her Children of the Desert series, Secrets of the Sands,

was published in 2010 by Mercury Retrograde Press. She currently lives in eastern Virginia with her husband and two large dogs, all of whom routinely try and usually fail to drag her away from the computer (or even worse, from her morning coffee) for long, rambling walks.

Allen Wold

Allen Wold was born in south-western Michigan, where he began writing teeny little stories when

he discovered an old portable typewriter. He finished high school in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated from Pomona College, in Claremont, California, where he later met his wife, Diane. They married in 1972,

and moved to North Carolina, where he began his career as a full time writer. In 1986, he became a full time father, writing when he could make the time. In 2003, he became a full time writer again,

when his daughter, Darcy, went off to college, also at Pomona.

He has published nine novels (has written several more, most of which will never see print, thank God), several short stories (mostly for the Elf Quest anthologies), five non-fiction books on computers (he’s completely self-taught, and it probably shows), and a number of articles, columns, reviews, and so forth, also concerning computers (written in language even he can understand).

Currently, Allen has an epic heroic fantasy (3000 pages, 800,000 words) with an editor; a vampire (no twinklies) in submission, a bizarre haunted house story that is far too long, a haunted village story, also too long, and other projects in hand.

Allen has been running his version of a writer’s workshop at various conventions for more than twenty five years, and has had some success, since several people have not only finished but sold stories started in the workshop. Allen also runs a plotting panel, which people have found helpful. Allen is a member of SFWA.

Brian Young

Bryan Young works across many different mediums. As a novelist, he’s the author of the

critically acclaimed sci-fi adventure, “ O p e r a t i o n : Montauk,” and the bestselling comedy novel, “Lost at the Con.” As a film producer, his last two films (“This Divided State” and “Killer at Large”) were released by

The Disinformation Company and were called “filmmaking gold” by The New York Times. He’s also published comic books with Slave Labor Graphics and Image Comics. He’s a contributor for the Huffington Post and StarWars.Com, and he’s the founder and editor in chief of the geek news and review site Big Shiny Robot!.

BC Brandt

BC Brandt can’t stand going too long without making something. She gets to feeling like

something’s wrong, and she has to use ink or computer to fix it. Anytime she gets burned out on one creative avenue, she finds herself already on another one. While most have involved paint or ink, these days the computer

is her primary tool, which has freed up an awful lot of shelf space. (The carpet is also grateful.) Her main workhorse is Adobe Illustrator, though she’s been known to fumble about in Photoshop.

A Roanoke native and a Hollins alum, BC has a degree in English and Film that she will never admit was an impractical choice. She currently works for a scuba diver, runs a small business revolving around her buttons, and once or twice a month takes up space at B&D Comics. She spent three years as a wildlife rescue volunteer (and won’t shut up about it) but changed tracks, and has been a volunteer for Feeding America since 2010. Archery, animals, and fountain pens are the way to her heart. She’d like to be Joss Whedon when she grows up, and Ray Bradbury if she doesn’t.

Josh Ginter

Artist Joshua Ginter, born and schooled in Roanoke; graduated from Art Institute of

Pittsburgh Online Division in 2012 with a first in Media Arts and Animation. A c a d e m i c a l l y excelled in character design and visual effects, finalizing classes received a much earned diploma, graduated with a

whimper into the world of unemployment and fickle hopes. Currently he is working for Darkstone Entertainment as a visual effects artist and a comic illustrator in small press.

Rich Hilliard

Richard Hilliard was born in rural Virginia in the 1960’s, and spent his youth dreaming of going

to New York City to study art. After a nearly 20 year career in the NY Metro area, he and his wife returned to VA in 1999, and began teaching at James Madison University, where he continues to this day. Growing

up during the time of the Apollo Moon missions, Rich has a great interest in sharing these adventures with young people. This has inspired him to pursue publishing and school visits as a way of bringing history alive for a new generation of space explorers. His first illustrated book for children, the award-winning “Neil, Buzz, and Mike Go to the Moon,” has been so well received that a second book, “Godspeed, John Glenn,” was released in late 2006, followed by “Ham, the Astrochimp” in 2007 and “Lucky 13: Survival in Space” in 2008. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Rich was honored to be selected as the featured children’s author at the Smithsonian Institution’s annual Space Day in Washington DC, and was a featured author at the National Air and Space Museum for the 40th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Ettelie Lovern

Ettelie is an artist as well as computer graphics guru. She studied at Comenius University in

Slovakia, where she obtained her Masters of Science degree. In addition to her awesome graphic design and computing skills, Ettelie also speaks 4 languages (English, Slovak, Japanese, and German). She

currently assists in running an e-commerce portion of a local business, and has a passion for all things Anime.

Brian McCulloch

Brian McCulloch was born in Blackwell Oklahoma, joining the United States Navy in 1994 and serving on active duty in Coronado California. After leaving military service he continued to persue a career in aerospace and discovered an artistic talent beyond basic drawing almost by accident after attending a class taught by Dru Blair in North Carolina.

After years of practice and continued refinement, and encouraged by industry professionals,

Brian began taking commissions for portraits, book covers, and aviation art. Many paintings

are detailed and colored in such a way as to be often mistaken for photography. Brian continues to learn and expand his knowledge of his craft from his home in Mississippi.

Matthew Roberts

Born on the easy streets of middle class Va, Matthew has been drawing grotesquely proportioned people in silly clothes since he could hold a

crayon. Countless reams of paper were subjected to drawings of superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy icons, sharks, dinosaurs, aliens, the occasional pretty thing for his mother as well, and shameless

tracings of Motley Crue publicity photos, movie posters and his dad’s Frank Frazetta art books. The vague desire to “draw” for a living came into focus with the comics explosion of the late 80s/early 90s. To bad he fell in love.

In order to provide for his soon to be wife, Matthew enlisted in the United States Air Force. His schedule during the early days of his enlistment allowed him the opportunity to take on the occasional comic book gig, including partnering with Robert Kirkman to fill in on his Funk-o-tron studios book, Battle Pope. Matthew continued doing work for Funk-o-tron and he seriously considered ending his enlistment and doing comics full time. However, the events of 9/11 left Matt with a renewed sense of patriotism. He re-enlisted and was soon left with little time to continue comics. Until now.

Matthew has recently retired from 20 years of service and was fortunate to find work at Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment, an imprint of Image Comics. Matthew’s work can be seen in a series of promotional pieces for The Walking Dead and Hyundai as well as the Petco Park Walking Dead Escape exclusive variant cover for the Walking Dead #100. He is currently working on an as-yet unannounced project due out in 2013. Matthew lives in Roanoke, Va with his wife of 20years, Jenna, and his two children, Ben and Holly.

Matt Slay

Hailing from Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Matt has been drawing comics and related insanity

on and off for the last 10 years. In the last 2 years, he has worked on trading card sets including Marvel: Avengers Assemble! Marvel Beginnings Series 2 and Tarzan for Cryptozoic Ent. This has led him to paint the cover of

IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Leonardo micro-series. He is currently painting the pages of Fatsa: Lord of the Dragons.

Brenna BeattieBrenna Beattie is a second generation geek and costumer, making her first real forays into costuming

around age 12. She is currently hard at work starting and internet book review show, and in the draft stages of a novel that is now in it’s

fifth year of planning.

Steph(anie) EstesI was born in a far off galaxy, in the Earth year of 1986. Unfortunately, my biological parents were forced to send me to a small, distant planet called Earth. It was here that my new family found me under a rock, or so my older sister keeps telling me. I’ve been cosplaying at conventions for about a decade (man that makes me feel old…). With my minimal instructions on how to sew from my mother, “line it up with this mark, put the presser foot down, press the pedal, and call if you need me,” I quickly learned how to make my own costumes within my first year really cosplaying. Over-all I would say I’m a pretty well rounded nerd (and proud of it) with being a fan of various anime, a bit of a gamer, growing up watching Star Trek on a daily basis with my dad you know I’ve gotta be a sci-fi nerd, and my love

of comics all starting with ElfQuest when I was a wee little Gefling. When I’m not saving the world one oddball moment at a time, my alternate identity is that of a full time student studying sciences, a motorcycle instructor, and a klutz. I love teaching people how to ride motorcycles because it’s always rewarding to be able to impart others with the knowledge I have to share and seeing people enjoy themselves. I am also a very random person and am easily distracted… hey look a kitty!

Tom HutchensTom Hutchens was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1978. After finishing High School he enlisted in the US Navy, spending the bulk of his Naval career as the Wardroom Supervisor

and Captain’s Chef on the USS Ohio (SSBN 726B). Being a huge Star Wars fan, many a failed barracks inspection happened over dioramas built out of action figures and vehicles set up around his barracks room. Honorably

discharged in 2000, Tom began his journey into costuming by joining the SCA and local Barony of Sacred Stone. Tom left the SCA in 2002 as college and work took its toll on extra-curricular activities, but not before learning basic techniques and skills necessary to become an armor smith. Later that year, he would build his first set of armor. In 2006, after his first visit to DragonCon, Tom would begin building his first set of Mandalorian armor as well as conceptualize an organization for Star Wars costumers that focused around Mandalorian armor. 2007 saw the launch of the Mandalorian Mercs, named after Tom’s gaming guild in the MMO “Star Wars Galaxies”. By 2010, he had become one of less than a handful of armor crafters that produced metal Mandalorian armor. Today, Tom spends his days as the Network Administrator for K&W Cafeterias Inc., as well as helps his wife Elisha with their small farm in Mocksville NC. Tom also continues to build Mandalorian costumes, adding an armory to the property in 2010. In January of 2012, Tom helped found “Little Warrior International” with other members of the Mandalorian Mercs. LWI is a non-profit charity that harnesses the power of Star Wars ™ to bring hope and encouragement to sick and underprivileged children around the world.

Bambi Riggsbee-SmithBambi has costumed since she was 3 years old apparently. There is a picture of her in her mother’s hat and shoes with a scarf on the back her mother documented a story which ends with her asking mom to tie the scarf, and then waving goodbye to mom, she is going shopping! This went on to designing evening dresses for her

Barbies (out of pilfered 6 inch wide silk ribbon from her mom’s sewing stash), making her own

sundress at age 10 (because her mother refused to make it for her, disagreeing with the “style”) and then wearing it, making her own dance, Halloween, and Mardi Gras costumes, and then AHHHHHHH

(angelic chorus inserted here) discovering sci-fi about age hhhmty. There are no pictures, but her first costumes was a replica of Uhura’s uniform, she has never looked back since. Bambi is delighted with the new opportunities for creative costuming, historic reproduction get better due to better and better research and finds, Steampunk is just well... the best thing EVER! Sci-fi and Anime means you are only limited by your supplies, Trading information, inspiration and support between costumers makes us all better costumers, people and sends good stuff out into the universe. Rodenberry was right!

Since our founding in 2007, the Mercs has become the elite Mandalorian costuming organization and our members have been in attendance at countless

USS Yeager, named for the famous pilot from West Virginia, is the oldest continuously

operating chapter of the international Star Trek Fan A s s o c i a t i o n Starfleet in the state of West Virginia. It’s a group with a long and interesting history, both in the real world and in it’s fictional shared universe.

Whether you are just beginning to build your first R2 or are starting to build your second or third

droid, there is plenty of information, tips and techniques that we have gathered to get you on your way.

We are here to help each other by sharing tips and information useful for building your

Astromech droid or other Sci-Fi related props. There is something here for every builder at every skill level. We are always learning something new from each other.

IKV: Devastator - Klingon’s

We’re a Klingon themed Star Trek fan club based in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia.

The Devastator’s membership shares an interest in sci-fi/fantasy, costuming, prop building, and celebrating the Struggle of Life in the manner of the Klingon race. Relaunched in 2008, the IKV Devastator aims to

continue a proud tradition: honor and glory in Star Trek fandom, excellence in Klingon costuming, and FUN! The IKV Devastator was originally founded in 1988 by G.B. Reed (also known as Kragtowl epetai-Trekkan, Da’Har Master of the Klingons), and was the first fan group of its type, bringing the might of the Klingon Empire to the Hampton Roads region. Kragtowl would go on to become an influential member of the Klingon Assault Group, and remains a prominent figure in klindom to this day. Members of the Devastator would later organize and found the club IKV Bat’Leth, which continues to do battle for the Empire now.

ROANOKE ROBOTICS CLUB

The Roanoke Robotics Club is a group of friendly folks who love to build fun stuff! We build robots,

teach workshops, hold contests, and share our work & our knowledge. We meet on the first Saturday of every month, at the Science Museum of Western Virginia,

Seven Hills Paranormal (SHP)

Seven Hills Paranormal Society (SHPS) is an investigative group dedicated to the research of anomalous experience through scientific means. Our purpose is to provide reasonable and

rational explanation or hypothesis for paranormal activity through multi-media observation and recording

techniques. In cases where such evidence cannot provide a satisfactory conclusion, our goal is to refer clients to agents more suited to their individual needs.Seven Hills Paranormal Society (SHPS) was founded in 2006 as a paranormal research group serving Lynchburg, Southside and Southwest VA, as well as eastern parts of West Virginia and Tennessee.Since our inception, our members have investigated claims of paranormal activity throughout the US, and have been proactive in establishing experimental investigative techniques in the research of revolutionary paranormal theories. SHPS is a proud founding member of the

National Paranormal Coalition (www.npcoalition.com), and is involved with several paranormal and metaphysical conferences, seminars and workshops throughout the state of VA.Our membership is an eclectic group of truth-seekers with widely varied cultures and backgrounds; electricians, carpenters, musicians, teachers, ministers, etc. It is this broad spectrum of interest, education, and personal belief systems that encourages SHPS to grow and expand our own awareness of and hypothesis for the “unexplained”.SHPS typically conducts field investigations bi-monthly, and we also hold monthly training/discussion groups. Public open houses are held annually to reveal and discuss our findings, and public workshops are offered throughout the year in conjunction with area partners for educational purposes. Monthly meetings are open to anyone of interest, but investigations are limited to the trained investigation team with the possibility of open spaces for new members on an approved and trial basis, as long as I-team requirements are met (please see the I-Team page under Membership.

SHPS approaches each case as a unique set of challenges. We are sensitive to our clients’ emotional and spiritual needs, and we work to ensure these needs are met in the most constructive manner possible.

We understand that coming to terms with the notion that there may be a force beyond our own belief systems is a very difficult step for many people. Discretion and professionalism are our utmost concern, and case details remain confidential unless authorized by our clients to share publicly.

SHPS considers only tangible and measurable anomaly when presenting “evidence” of paranormal activity. Though we do not automatically discount personal experiences, they are not used as basis for consideration of paranormal activity. SHPS’ membership consists of varied personal belief systems, but all our investigators recognize the importance of standardized protocol while on vigil. Mediums, sensitives and intuitives are welcome within SHPS membership, but such persons are expected to follow the scientifically-based protocols set forward by SHPS. ‘Evidence” based on intuition or claimed personal experience, though it may be archived, is generally not presented in SHPS’ case studies.

South Western Virginia Ghost Hunters (SWVA)

We are a dedicated group of individuals whose sole purpose is helping those in need and

finding the truth behind haunted locations. We are here to investigate paranormal activity here in South West Virginia and surrounding areas, whether it be in your home or business. We use the latest

methods and technology in our investigations to uncover the truth.

We are a non-profit organization.

We also respect your privacy and are completely professional when dealing with our clients and their families and homes. We have been helping people in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas for over 4 years now and have produced great results, in debunking said haunted locations or confirming that a place is indeed haunted.

HOW DO I BID?Taped near each artwork is a piece of paper. This is the bid sheet. It is usually located below or beside the artwork that it is associated with. The bid sheet lists the Artist,Title of the piece, the minimum bid for the piece, and a place for you to write your bid amount and badge number.

WHY IS THAT LINE HIGHLIGHTED?Saturday evening, all bid sheets will be marked with a yellow line (highlighted). This highlighted line will indicate the last bid on the piece at the close of the Art Show on Saturday as an ‘inventory’ system. Additional bids may be made after the highlight mark has been made on Sunday. So please feel free to continue bidding on that special piece your have your heart set on!

WHAT ITEMS WILL GO TO AUCTION?Any artwork or items in the Art Show that have two (2) or more bids will go to the Live Auction on Sunday. You will be able to purchase your item(s) after the Live Auction on Sunday during the designated pick-up time. If a piece is not bid on, it will not go to Auction. So if you want it, bid on it!

NO ARTWORK MAY BE SOLD UNTIL AFTER THE LIVE AUCTION ON SUNDAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

HOW DOES THE LIVE AUCTION WORK?There will only be one live auction/sale. As noted above, any piece with two (2) or more bids will go to auction. All pieces going to auction will begin with the highest bid listed on the bid sheet. All art must be paid for and picked up immediately following the auction. This includes pieces that had a single bid, and did not go to the live auction. Any artwork not picked up by 4:00PM on Sunday will go back to the artist.

HOW DO I PURCHASE MY WON ITEM(S)?

After the Live Auction is over, the Art room will open.

Tell the staff which pieces you’re there to purchase or give them your badge number, or the ‘Winning Bid’ slip(s) from the Live auction. The Staff will write up the receipt of your purchase(s), and the total amount due. Cash, Check, and Credit Card (+3% charge fee) are accepted.

Once payment is verified, and you have been given your receipt your new artwork is ready to go to it’s new home!

This year we would like to take a moment to remember one of our con mothers. Terri was one of those special people that would do all she could for you. If you had the privilege of knowing her, then you can consider yourself one of her “kids”.

Many of you may know her as “Professor McGonagall” but all of you knew her as “Mama Terri”. She was always there to lend a hand, ear, shoulder, or hug. You could find her helping with charity, running the swag table, washing cars or hanging with her daughter.

Terri wasn’t just a member of the staff, she was a friend and member of the family. Terri, thank you for everything. Although you are missed, you’ll never be forgotten.

BRONY MEETUPAn interesting phenomena in fandom recently has been the growing popularity of Lauren Faust’s “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”. Faust created this almost entirely new take on the 1980s cartoon series based on the idea that if a producer created a story with likable, identifiable characters in good action-adventure plots, the audience wouldn’t care if they were Sunburned Mid-Teen Tai-Chi Wombats or even *gasp* cute little pastel-colored ponies. Then, a startling phenomenon occurred. Fathers, brothers and uncles started noticing that there was one show on that they could watch with their younger female charges and not fewer as if their brains were slowly turning to overly-thinned tapioca. In fact, it was actually pretty good. As they saying goes, “they told a couple of friends, and they told a couple of friends” and before long, a new breed of fandom, the Brony was born. They can range from in age from single digits, to the oldest one documented so far at 54. “Brony” is a shortening of “brother pony” while female fans were called “Pega-Sisters”, but since the entire theme of MLP:FIM is “love and tolerance”, we don’t care- male, female, young, old, all are welcome. At 8:00pm In The Washington Lecture Hall!

Ladies & Gentlemen! Step right up and get those costumes ready for the show!

Sign-ups will begin on Friday, and run through until Saturday Afternoon.

Judging will begin Saturday at 6pm on these three segments:

Presentation• Technique• Craftsmanship•

And Awards will be given for the following categories:

Best in Show• Best Craftsmanship• Best Presentation• Best Re Creation• Best Juvenile• Best Skit• Best Group•

Fan Groups will also have their owncategories as well - just held to a bit of a higher standard.

Hall Costumes - these are reserved for persons who may not have entered the Costume Contest - but are given a little certificate of recognition for having an awesome costume. Hall Costume ticket holders are encouraged to attend the Costume Contest to show off

their creative and beautiful costumes to the masses.

cape out of the cleaners! We’re holding a special contest this year above and beyond our normal awesome contest. We want to see old costumes, really old costumes. Nothing that is currently in production. Nothing that is even from this century (2000 or above). We want to see

retro costumes from the 1920′s to the 1980′s – the older the better.

This is not part of the regular costume contest, so it has a few different rules…

No store bought costumes (80% hand made)• There must be photographic proof that your costume is legitimate• The movie or TV show must be documented (old advertising or • mention in a historical publication that can be confirmed)If you are not the maker, the maker should be there to defend • their creation.

Other than that, all regular costume rules apply! Also, please remember, we are a family friendly convention.
