AHHCHOO! COLD vs FLU:
WHEN to KEEP YOUR CHILD at
HOME
Although flu (influenzia) and colds are
both respiratory illness, they’re caused
by different viruses. Colds may start
with a little tickle in your throat and it
can take a few days for you to
experience the full onset of symptoms.
The flu hits hard and fast. You may
wake up feeling fine, but by the end of
the day you have a fever, chills, and are
completely exhausted.

Dear Sherwood Forest Families, The month of May is here and the end of the school year is in sight. I usually look forward to the end of each school year’s fun activities, but this year they are a little bittersweet for me since we’re coming to the end of my time as principal of this great school. There is a little over a month until the last day of school. Between now and then, I look forward to making wonderful memories together and finishing this school year strong!
Meet New Principal Sarah Gill! Parents and community members will have an opportunity to meet Mrs. Gill at our next PTA general meeting Thursday, May 17th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in our school cafeteria. Mrs. Gill is excited about meeting our Sherwood Forest families and I look forward to introducing her to you!
Sherwood’s PTA is an integral part of our school’s success. Our PTA assists with the
additional costs of field trips, organizing and leading events such as the carnival and book fairs
and helping our school to provide students with additional materials and supplies for their
learning. A special thank you to this year’s board members: Presidents Kari Jones and
Darianne Westcott, Vice President Vanessa Rodriguez, Treasurer Heidi Brown,
Membership Aviana Jupiter, and Secretaries Megan Mitchell and Stephanie Paradee. An
additional thank you to our PTA and parents who provided treats each day to Sherwood staff
for Staff Appreciation week (May 7 – 11). I encourage you to consider assisting the Sherwood
PTA! We always welcome new members.
SBA Testing: Smarter Balanced testing for all of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade scholars begins very soon. Thank you in advance to our staff members who will proctor and support SBA testing, particularly Mrs. Vukas and Mrs. Pryor. winning team from the Sherwood
Forest Battle of the Books! The “Polar
Express” competed against 23 other
Federal Way Schools on April 25th at
the District Battle of the Books

our Sherwood Forest teams for their

Storming the Sound Sherwood Forest is participating in the “Storming the Sound” salmon program again this year, thanks to Mrs. Skahan, who is overseeing this project. “Storming the Sound” is about raising salmon, learning about the impacts of surface water pollution on salmon, and what we all can do to help prevent water pollution. Our aquarium is located in the 400’s wing. On May 11, Mrs. Skahan’s third grade class will
release the salmon “fry” (baby salmon) in the
Salmon Release Celebration at the West Hylebos
Wetlands Park, along with other schools in our
district. This program is a partnership with the City
of Federal Way and Federal Way Public Schools to
promote science and environmental education.
Federal Way Public School’s
Heroes Banquet Aurora Leal at Taco Bell is our hero at Sherwood Forest! Thank you Aurora for your contributions to our scholars of the Forest!
100% PARTICIPATION AT
STUDENT LED CONFERENCES
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated in
our Scholar Led Conferences. Whether it was a face
to face meeting or a phone conference, the
important idea is to work in partnership to support
your scholar’s learning.
Counselor Corner:
Mindfulness is a term that is becoming used more
frequently in the context of counseling and schools. If
you are unfamiliar with this term and want to know
more, here is an explanation from School Counselor
Kayla Marsten:
“In our busy world, our minds and bodies can get
wrapped up in the hustle and bustle, and may have a
hard time slowing down. It is also easy to get stuck
thinking about things in the past or future, while
forgetting to focus on the here and now.
The benefits of mindfulness for children and
adults are plentiful, including decreased stress and
increased resilience. Mindfulness is bringing our
attention to our thoughts and feelings without
judgement.”
I have started incorporating more mindfulness
ideas and activities into my counseling lessons, and I look
forward to increasing this concept even more next year.

Planning Your Vacation Time for
2018-2019?
Please take the time to check the Federal Way
School District website at www.fwps.org. The
calendar for the 2018-2019 school year, with the
first and last days of school, winter, mid-winter
and spring breaks are all there.
Please consult the calendar before you make
travel or vacation plans. Vacations taken on
school days are not excused per our district
policy. We want all of our students to be here
every day. Even a few missed days can make a
difference for a student! Missed school days can
affect your child’s academic success,
relationships with peers, and make it difficult to
transition back into the classroom smoothly.
Thank you for helping us by having your child
attend every day that he/she can possibly be
present!
Warm Weather Reminders:
Water bottles are permitted with water only in
them, please label with your scholar’s name.
Sunscreen is permitted provided it is rub-on only.
It is best to put it on at home before school.
Scholars will apply sunscreen themselves, staff will not be able to help.
Scholars will keep the sunscreen; the school cannot store sunscreen.
Scholars cannot share sunscreen with other scholars.
Hello FWPS Parents and Families,
A grade is the ultimate form of feedback to a student and it must be accurate. As a result, Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) is working diligently to ensure every
scholar’s grade is accurate.
FWPS fully embraces input from our parents and community to ensure excellence in educating each of our 23,000 scholars. Over the past two school years,
approximately 60 students, parents, teachers and principals convened to inform our current grading system. We invited our community to a parent forum held in
January 2018 to provide valuable feedback on the committee’s work. We would like to invite you to another opportunity to provide valuable feedback to
inform high quality and consistent grading practices across schools. The SBGR parent forum is June 6, 5:30pm – 7:00pm at Lakota Middle School, 1415 SW
314th St. Federal Way 98023. Light refreshments will be provided. Spanish, Korean and Russian interpreters will also be available.
If you have questions about SBGR in FWPS, contact us at (253) 945-2126 or visit www.fwps.org/SBGR.
