The Sherlock Holmes books were written during Holmes’s earlier years when he worked with his partner Watson and

was hired to solve mysteries all over the world. When Holmes’s got older her decided to take up bee-keeping and retire and live

in London. The Beekeeper’s Apprentice continues Holmes’s story but through the point of view of a

teenage girl who lives near him and becomes his apprentice. When she first meets him she

After Holmes’s retires he spends his time raising bees. In fact, Russell and Holmes’s met one day while Holmes’s was observing bees. This sparks a conversation between them that starts there friendship. Russell surprises Holmes’s with her knowledge of bees and he invites her back to his cottage where they spend hours talking about scientific experiments, cases, and logic.

This quote shows Russell’s wit that surprises Holmes's when he first meets her:

“I should have thought it obvious,” I said impatiently, though even at that age I was

aware that such things were not obvious to the majority of people. “I saw paint on your pocket-handkerchief, and traces on your fingers where

you wiped it away. The only reason to mark bees that I can think of is to enable one to

follow them to their hive. You are either interested in gathering honey or in the bees themselves, and it is not the time of year to

harvest honey. Three months ago we had an unusual cold spell that killed many hives.

Therefore I assume that you are tracking these in order to replenish your own stock.”

During the time period of The Beekeeper’s Apprentice England was going through World War 1. This was one of the largest wars in

history and it involved approximately 60 million Europeans. Because of technological advances World War 1 is responsible for 9 million deaths and was one of the deadliest conflicts in world history. This

war made way for many political changes in Europe during that time.

Russell feels helpless during the war because she is spending all of her time safely at Holmes's cottage learning how to be a detective while others were out risking there lives for there country. Russell believes that this is unfair and wants to help, so she tells Holmes

how she feels. He explains to her that when the war is over people with minds like Russell and her training will be in high demand, so

she should stop worrying and keep learning because that is how she will be able to help her country most.
