SKUAST AnnUAl RepoRT-2015-16
The J&K State is an agrarian state with about 70% population directly or indirectly associated with agriculture and allied sectors for subsistence and livelihood. It has diverse climatic regimes ranging from sub-tropical Jammu to temperate Kashmir and cold arid Ladakh. The diversity of agroclimatic zones creates bottlenecks but also offers opportunities. The valley of Kashmir is largely a mountainous terrain and a typical Himalayan area and suffers from marginality, fragility, diversity, inaccessibility but also has niche characteristics for certain crops. The agriculture is largely marginal subsistence based with average size holding about 0.67 hectares. Agriculture contributes about 20% to state GDP. The farming systems are invariably heterogenous and complex and suffer from a host of socioeconomic and production constraints. However, there is great scope for harnessing comparative and niche advantage in certain crops that can give enhanced market orientation and livelihood opportunities to farming. SKUAST-Kashmir is a leading academic and Research institution in the region that caters to basic, applied and strategic research needs of Kashmir and Ladakh region by developing crop varieties, technological backup and extension support for transformation of agriculture in the valley. Over a period of time University has achieved remarkable feats in advancement of science based progress in farming system.
In the year that has passed by, despite unfavorable situations for most part of the year, University did a commendable progress in different spheres of activity that has won accolades for the institution.
FOrEwOrd
University successfully revived the Mushkbudji and other aromatic rice landraces of Kashmir and identified market channels to promote conservation through use. The initiative has resulted in huge response from farmers and the programme has been a great success. University identified eight high yielding varieties of field crops, pulses, oilseeds and vegetable crops that can go a long way in enhancing productivity. University has taken up promotion of high density apple plantation in collaboration with line departments to augment fruit production in valley. Various elite varieties have been procured and are being evaluated and mother blocks established to make available bud wood to farmers in coming years. Frontier sciences like biotechnology is being strengthened and university successfully created MAS derived products in rice in Mushkbudji and other backgrounds for blast resistance and the approach is being vigorously pursued to pyramid desirable genes of resistance in apple for scab. University scientists also brought laurels to the university by bagging prestigious national and international awards and fellowships in India and abroad for advancing academic excellence. University also got a number of mega projects for creating infrastructural and research capacity in various strategic areas of focus. In line with the requirements for creating state of art instructional and research capacity, university augmented the infrastructure in various constituent units of SKUAST-K including instructional facilities, laboratories, hostels, guest houses etc.

Library and information SystemSKUAST-K Library System being multi-campus in structure made every possible effort during 2015-16 to provide information services to its users at each campii both in print as well as in electronic form. The Library System was enriched not only by addition of new information sources but also through incorporation of new information delivery and communication techniques. It strived hard to facilitate the required information to the scientists and the students and tried to outreach them on anytime anywhere basis by offering them the desired information at their work place and in anticipation to their demand. A brief about the core activities carried out during the year 2015-16 are as under:
I. Addition of Information Sources: The primary focus in a library or information centre remains on the development of its information resources. The information at present is available in print and electronic forms and the users are seen to use both of these formats as per their convenience and taste. The Library System made efforts to acquire/subscribe information in either of the formats in accordance with the information seeking behaviour of its users. The variety of information thus facilitated during the year under either of the formats is given as under:
(a) Print information resources
1) Books in Print Form: Utmost care was taken to ensure that at least basic requirement of users with regard to Print Books is met. As such 1006 books pertaining to Agriculture & allied disciplines were purchased during 2015-16, which involved an expenditure of Rs. 22.00 Lacs approximately. The book collection was thus substantially improved with much focus on quality than quantity and the total number of Text and Reference Books has now reached to 52,441.
2) Theses in Print Form: The Library System received 109 Masters’ and 33 Doctoral theses in print form during the academic session 2015-16, submitted by students. The degree and faculty wise breakup is presented in Table 1.

2.2. Germplasm enhancement and trait development
2.2.1. marker assisted incorporation of blast resistant genes in high yielding and aromatic cultivars of Kashmir valley.
Rice blast is a major production constraint in Kashmir. Therefore, breeding of blast resistant varieties forms an important activity. Marker assisted incorporation of major blast resistance genes in the background of predominant high yielding variety Jhelum and important aromatic landrace Mushkbudji is underway. Marker assisted backcross breeding approach has been followed and currently BC3F1 seed has been generated.
2.2.2. molecular characterization of varieties for blast resistance
Among the high yielding rice varieties released from the Centre, the ones which occupy considerable area and are popular include Jhelum, Shalimar Rice 1 and K-332. Shalimar Rice 1 is known for its resistance towards blast invariably in whole Kashmir region. An attempt was made to generate the preliminary information regarding the molecular basis of its resistance. The said variety along three other popular varieties Jhelum, K-332 and Kohsar (K-429) were screened using a panel of gene based and gene linked molecular markers to confirm the presence/ absence of alleles known to confer resistance against blast.
2.2.3. Development of climate resilient varieties
Research on development of climate resilient varieties that could perform better under water, low temperature and heat stress has been initiated in the university based on root architectural variation, physiological and biochemical parameters and field performance under stress conditions. While focus has been on cold stress in rice, water stress is mainly targeted in case of maize and rajmash. A facility for in depth root studies has been established at Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura. In case of maize two genotypes DT-1 (GM-6 x C8) and DT-2 (GM-6 x KDM-111) and three genotypes in rajmash (WB-1634, WB-341 and WB-185) have been identified and are currently under testing.
