We are also proud recipients of the Jozi Tower's convention banner which is flying high in our Den. Those who feel that they are to make claim to the banner are welcome to arrange a formal visit for negotiations of such.Well done to Lion Mike Marshal and his wife Lady Lion Debbie who successfully ran, for the second time, diabetes testing on Sat 30th May. Thanks to our members Lions Rob Bing, Peter McKillen, Denis, George, Martin and Lady Lion Betty who supported the team on the day. I also need to give recognition to Lion Rob Henry from Ramsgate Lions club who has assisted us with equipment and expertise in helping us launch and run th is very worthy project. Lion Bingo was held on 25th April and 23rd May at our Den headed up by Lion Kenny. Thanks to our Lions and Ladies who helped on each of those days with transportation and eats. Many prizes were handed out and good time had by all

prepare for our annual Lions Show. Tremendous dedication and effort by all Sheppie Lions and Ladies is undertaken to strive for a better show every year. Some years are more

successful than others and this year all indications show that this should to be a successful one. With only 5 weeks away thanks go out to Show Convenor Lion Jean Masson and his team who are making their final arrangements. Good luck.Our Lion Ladies have been hard at work again preparing meals for the needy, issuing parcels for children in hospital, gett ing donation t ins out there for Cornerstone home for autistic children, raising funds via raffles for their charity account and much much more. Well done you make us proud being such dedicated Ladies who form the backbone and support of our club.In closing I am glad to announce that Lions Mike Marshal, Johann Du Plessis and Gary Vogt are all on the mend after each spending time in ICU/hospital recently..

he Lions' Agricultural Show, the Lions Hibiscus Coast Show, or the Lions' South Coast Show - whatever it's

Tname has been in the past, the Hibiscus Coast's Annual Trade Show has always been a great success. Now, in its 30th year of operation, the South Coast Lions Show wears a modern look, appealing to a whole

new generation of show visitors. The Lions’ show has, for the past 30 years, been organized and run by the Port Shepstone Lions Club. The show was originally the brainchild of Lion Louis Marx, who convened the event for a number of years. 100% of the proceeds of this event are ploughed back into local community service projects.

During the 80’s and 90’s the show formed an important part of the Hibiscus Festival program. Today, thanks to a new partnership with South Coast Tourism, the event will officially form part of the Winter Holidays/Sardine Festival program. Up until 2 years ago, the event was always held at the Port Shepstone borough fields however, owing to the deteriorating facilities at the borough fields, the club decided to move the event to the Port Shepstone Country Club cricket oval. The organisers are most grateful to the Country Club Committee and members for allowing the use of their facilities.

An exciting arena and entertainment program utilizing as much local talent as possible is planned for this year’s show. A full fun fair with plenty of adrenaline rides for the whole family will also return to this year’s event. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from County Ford, this year will also see the reintroduction of the Miss South Coast pageant with contestants from all over South Africa participating. A brand new Lions’ Mountain Bike Race will also be introduced on the Sunday morning which will attract cyclists and their families from all over the country. An arts and crafts marquee will be introduced to this year’s event which will showcase our local entrepreneurs and provide them with the opportunity to sell their wares to both locals and holiday makers alike. The South Coast Lions Show is now recognised as the perfect showcase for Hibiscus Coast businesses and stands are usually always fully booked well before the show. The judging of the stands is performed by an independent panel of judges. Trophies and certificates are awarded to stallholders for the following categories : Best Overall Stand, Best Outdoor Stand, Best Indoor Stand, Best Marketed Stand, Best Motor Dealer, Best Local Business, Best Small Business, Best School Stand. This event is not a flea market and organisers encourage exhibitors to build professional stands which are in line with the theme of a trade expo. The event will be held from 10th – 12th July which coincides with the winter school holidays and Sardine Festival making it an ideal opportunity to promote our local businesses to the thousands of holiday makers who will be visiting our coast. This year the event will be well marketed in areas such as Gauteng and the Freestate as well as major centres in KZN such as Durban and Pietermaritzburg thus attracting as many visitors as possible from up country and ensuring that money is ploughed into our local economy.

Port Shepstone Lions can take a bow. The show is the biggest local service/fund-raising project undertaken by volunteer members of a single service club. As a once-off it would have been great. To have kept it running and growing for 30 years is truly an incredible achievement!

WHAT IS THE DUC?

Since hatching in late 2013, Rubber Duc has taken the South African music scene by storm, and somewhat by surprise! Their very first single, “Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That” hit the charts at full flight and peaked at the number 2 spot on 5FM and East Coast Radio and made the top 10 on several other radio stations.

Starting out as a trio consisting of Nick Jordaan, Brendan Campbell and Sheldon Sham, the DUCs have grown not only in reputation, but also in size! Amiel Gopal has just joined the band, adding spice to their already quirky and unique sound, which they describe as “folk-swing-hop”.

THE DUC FACTOR:

They’ve gathered a fine flock of followers and a ‘duckload’ of attention. And rightfully so: their sound is fun and authentic, with cheerful, catchy melodies and clever lyrics that stick in your mind… and make you want to dance. In addition to performing original material, they do a mean job of “ducking up” covers with such playful passion and sincere joy it’s simply impossible not to like them.

These Rubber Ducs are down to earth and refuse to take themselves too seriously. Which is a refreshing change from the usual tortured artist “I suffer for my art” (apologies Lloyd Cole) mask so often encountered on the music scene...

The Ducs have already gathered a large and very varied flock of fans! They have played at many South African live music venues from Pretoria to Durban to the Cape and back again to their Jozi home base. AND they give away real rubber ducks at their gigs!

If you are into old school Rock and Roll, then Mazirlou and the Rockabilly Rebels, Durban's newest rockabilly band is just for you.

Formed in 2014 by ace guitarist Andy Turrell, it includes the dynamic Marion Loudon on vocals, the talented Jill Murraybrown on Bass Guitar as well as trying her hand on the Upright Bass, and the legendary Francois Hardy on drums and vocals.

Rockabilly music is timeless and has recently seen a massive worldwide revival by a new generation of young musicians who love the rough edged country rock sounds of the 50's. With Rockabilly's definitive strong rhythms, vocal twangs and common use of the tape echo, it was popularised by artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Wanda Jackson, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Horton, Roy Orbison, Eddie Cochran, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Bands are made up typically with just guitar, double bass, drums, piano and vocals. Latter day Rockabilly bands include the Stray Cats, Irish born Imelda May and American Kim Lenz. Expect to hear all the great rockabilly hits, Train Kept a Rollin, That's Alright, Rock Around the Clock, Folsom Prison Blues, Be Bop A Lula and Mystery Train.

Rockabilly goes beyond just the music it's a lifestyle that allows its followers to start believing they are the stars of the

1950's. The Rockabilly enthusiasts can be seen attending retro car shows, drive-in movies and burlesque clubs. The Rockabilly male generally longs for a '59 Cadillac and to play the role of Danny Zuko in the local theatre production of Grease, with great care taken over crafting his magnificent pompadour and mutton chop sideburns. The rockabilly females are a bizarre hybrid of Betty Crocker and Bettie Page, trying to be part 50's housewife and part pinup model. Much like her significant other, she swears she was born in the wrong era. The Rockabilly couple are a clear example of what happens when aging punks embrace Johnny Cash rather than Ed Hardy.

This unique music is far from a "thing of the past." It is alive today more than ever. The same driving guitar licks, frantic vocals, stand-up bass slap and heavy snare drum backbeat are still as appealing today as they were in the 50's.

Mazirlou and the Rockabilly Rebels will perform live in the Lions Entertainment tent at the 2015 South Coast Lions Show on Friday 10th July from 7pm.

There is no cover charge however visitors will be charged normal entry at the main gate which allows them access to the entire show for the day.

Le Riche Racing and X-treme Shows have perfected an innovative and wildly extreme Trials show that's guaranteed to get your heart racing.

Stunts that you wouldn't even dream of are performed by not only one… But two of South Africa's most successful Trials riders at the same time. The sibling duo boasts 13 SA titles as well as multiple USA national round wins between them, resulting in an overall USA #2 and #4 AMA finishes in the top Pro division.

X-Treme Shows The 30 minute X-Show is action packed from start to finish with two Trials performers that are recognised internationally. These daredevil brothers will put on a show with twice as much punch, action and intensity as any other show on offer.

With 17 years' worth of Trials riding and international training experience under their belts, stunts that have never been performed or even attempted before in South Africa are now possible. This promises to be a mind blowing show

that will impress all audiences.

So what props are used?

A trailer, professionally built and tailor-made to the le Riche brothers' specifications is used as the basis for the demonstration. The actual double cab vehicle is also used to enhance the show, where the crowd can literally see the motorcyclists ride right over it.

This is a complete crowd interactive show with the two riders wearing cordless mics, explaining, entertaining and bringing the spectators right into the action on just how they fly across giant gaps, flip back sheer vertical wheelies, fly up a 3.5 metre high wall and do full speed nose wheelies…to name a few! As a final showstopper and the most impressive trick yet, there will be a 360 degree bike rollover. Audiences watching are sure to be blown away.

Le Riche Racing will perform in the main arena at the South Coast Lions Show on Saturday 11th July. Two shows have been scheduled for 11:15 and15:00.

and 25 years of age.

The prelims will be held at the South Coast Mall

where after 12 selected finalists will be pampered

for a week leading up to the grand finale which

will take place in the Lions Entertainment tent at

the South Coast Lions Show on Saturday 11th July

at 17:00. Fantastic prizes have been organised

They perform songs such as Heartache Tonight - the Eagles, Another Saturday Night - Cat Stevens, She’s A Lady- Tom Jones, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da – Beatles, My Dingaling- Chuck Berry, Smooth – Santana, Are You Lonesome Tonight – Elvis, amongst many others. They also offer brief skits on various subjects. they are bawdy and naughty and will have the audience in stitches.

With excerpts from their first smash hit shows Not The Full Monty, The Three Tonners, and Book Club to their later successes, Bad Moon Rising, Who’s Your Daddy and Boep Idles.

Expect all the old favorites from The Beatles to Roy Orbison, Michael Jackson to Elvis and Tom Jones to Robbie Wessels, they will also re-visit how men can multi-task. There will be some brain numbing red-neck antics and evena message from “The Arch” thrown in for good measure. The leafy suburb of Umtentweni now finally has it’s very own

pharmacy. This is thanks to local pharmacist Lion Kelvin Hulley

who decided to relocate from Anerley to Umtentweni. The move

itself had to be done on a Sunday, the only day the pharmacy is not open. Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies rose to

the challenge and went along with their trucks, bakkies and cars to assist Lion Kelvin with the mammoth task of

moving. It was a real “hands-on” project involving the dismantling of shelving, loading of furniture items and of

course transporting all the medicines. Several Lions offered to transport the viagra, however Kelvin was having

none of that! Within the short space of 3 hours, the entire pharmacy was dismantled, packed into vehicles,

transported to the new location at the Tweni Spar Shopping Centre and reassembled. The team work was

outstanding. At around midday all involved were invited to Quenchers Pub where Lion Justin Hinchliff and Lion

Lady Suzette Boshoff had prepared a delicious Potjiekos as a treat for the hard workers. Plenty a toast was made

to celebrate the fine efforts of all involved - well done!

uring April, the Lion Ladies Club of Port Shepstone purchased R2000-00 worth of children’s books and Dwrapped all the books with a cellophane covering. They then visited the Cornerstone School for

Autistic Children and donated all the books to the school library. The books were gratefully accepted

by both the staff and children alike. The Lion Ladies utilised their own funding and manpower to make this very

worthy project possible.

uring April, xenophobic violence broke out in the

DDurban area. A plea for assistance to the victims was circulated to all clubs. Scores of people

were left homeless and had to be moved into refugee camps around the city.

Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies immediately sprung into action and, within a day, several bags of clothing, blankets and baby accessories, including food were organised. Lion Andre Beneke then drove through to Durban and handed over the much needed items to very grateful recipients.

6 members represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club at the recent Jozi Towers Lions Multiple District 410 Convention held in Randburg. The entire event took place at the Randburg Towers Hotel in Republic Road, Randburg.

District Governor Martin Rundle and Past District Governor Denis Meyer were the first to arrive on Tuesday 28th April. They both attended the meeting of the MD Council of Governors during the morning of Wednesday 29th April. The rest of the Sheppie contingent arrived during the afternoon of that same day and, in true Sheppie form proceeded straight to the pub for some fellowship with the other early arrivals. It was during this time that they met up with the international contingent of visiting Lions from the Mannheim Rosengarten Lions Club in Germany. That evening Lions Denis and Martin attended the Past District Governor’s Dinner whilst the rest enjoyed dinner at the local Dros.

During the morning of Thursday 30th April, Districts A, B and C held their 4th Cabinet meetings. These were followed by a GMT/GLT Meeting hosted by Lions Cliff Hocking and Mike Newlands. This was followed by more fellowship in the hotel pub. The visiting Lions from Germany set up a hospitality table and treated all delegates present to delicious snacks and specially imported beer and wine from their local breweries and winery. The imported beer was to last for 3 days, however, thanks partly to the thirsty local Lions (including a few from Sheppie!), the beer lasted just over a day! That evening all delegates were treated to a welcoming evening with live music and plenty of hilarious games and laughter, mostly organised by our visiting international delegates from Germany.

During the morning of Friday 1st May, the 4 Districts held their respective Conventions. At the District 410-C Convention, Lion Willie Van Der Schuyf from Reitz was elected as District Governor Elect, Lion Kim Van Wyk from North Durban, 1st Vice District Governor Elect and Lion Ken Toward from Amanzimtoti, 2nd Vice District Governor Elect. International Guest Past International Director Raju Manwani from India, visited the Convention and presented Lion Willie with his District Governor blazer and addressed the gathering. The District Conventions were followed by lunch, various training workshops and the meeting of the Committee of the Whole. That evening the hotel hosted a lavish banquet for all delegates. During the banquet the Multiple District Citizen of the Year Award was presented to International Golfing Legend, Gary Player who, although unable to attend owing to overseas commitments, participated in a video interview which was shown to all present.

The Multiple District Convention was held on Saturday 2nd May. The Convention was superbly run by Council Chairman Holger Sircoulomb. During the deliberations, a very thought provoking video was shown on the plight of the elephant population and the impact of the ivory trade on international terrorism. CCE Rob Fowler also encouraged clubs to donate towards the victims of the Nepal earthquake which resulted in tens of thousands of rands being raised from clubs present at the Convention. He also introduced a new Multiple District Campaign due to be launched soon which encourages the public not to leave their children and pets in cars in the hot sun. Next year’s Convention in Ballito, KZN was advertised by means of a superb video presentation involving the members of the Ballito Lions Club. Lion Holger’s valedictory speech was very inspiring and he presented many awards to those members who assisted him during his term of office. He then officially inducted incoming Council Chairman Lion Rob Fowler of the Centurion Lifestyle Lions Club, District 410-B. During the morning Mix FM Radio also broadcasted live from the Randburg Towers Hotel and interviews were conducted with various Lions including our International Guest and members of the visiting Mannheim Rosengarten Lions Club in Germany. The “Rainbow Nation” Farewell part took place that evening. Most delegates dressed accordingly which resulted in much laughter and hilarity. The live entertainer had the dance floor full until well after midnight.

The following morning delegates bid farewell to each other and set off on their long journeys home. Hats off to the Wilro Park Lions for their superb organisation and running of this Convention. Delegates were most impressed with their friendly and helpful attitude as well as the hospitality, facilities and superb catering provided by the Randburg Towers Hotel. And to those wonderful Lions from Germany who we had the privilege of meeting.....PROST!!!

Imagine if this awareness program can just save the life of one child or someone’s favourite pet! Every year there are horrific stories of a normally caring and careful mother or

father forgetting that the inside of their closed vehicle can get up to 80 degrees Centigrade in just 20 minutes if left out in the hot sun. The sun is not only hot in summer. Winter can be just as dangerous! It only takes a few minutes for a child or a pet inside a car and unable to escape from the increasing heat to die a most awful and totally unnecessary death.

Each club in the Multiple District is encouraged to purchase these special decals and to display them prominently on their own cars or give them friends, family and work colleagues so that they can display them too. These decals can also be used as licence holders.

Strategies you can consider as a Lions club to further enhance and develop the awareness program are:

1. Nominate a Lion in your Club that is willing to be a champion and driver for this advocacy programme;2. Contact the management of your local shopping centres and ask them if they will put up A3 signs with the samemessage in their parking areas and in prominent parts of the centre itself. Large PDF images will be available from the Lions MD410 website for you to download and use.3. Contact your local newspapers and ask them to print the decal design as a community service. 4. Send images and a short description of how your Lions Club has used your awareness decals and other material to promote this programme. Send them to denis@denismeyer.com and they will be posted under the “Hot Cars” project link on the MD website.

The “Hot Car” decals will be available in packs of 100 at a cost of R2 each. The funds for the purchase of these decals and related activities can come from your Lions Project Account.

DLadies visited Port Shepstone

hospital and handed over several goodie bags to mothers at the maternity ward. The b a g s c o n t a i n e d clothing, toys and food for their newly born infants. Many of these m o t h e r s h a v e n o money and often leave hosp i ta l w i th the i r in fants wrapped in newspaper.

The Lions Club of Port Shepstone ran another successful diabetes testing clinic at Harbour View Superspar on Saturday 30th May.

Of the 100 people tested during the course of the morning, 28 out of their sugar level range and were given sound advice by Sister (Lion Lady) Debbie Marshall on how to deal with their condition. All test results were recorded and forwarded to Diabetes South Africa in Pietermaritzburg. All members of the public tested each received a ticket indicating their test reading.

inder City Moths in Seapark hosted their third annual Wine and Food tasting Festival a their Shellhole during April.

COnce again, regular supporters, Sheppie Lions and their families attended the event en-masse and enjoyed a wonderful day of fine cuisine and delicious wines. 4 courses were served, Malayan, Italian, Indian and British.

Numerous wines and brandies were also available for tasting. The event was most enjoyable and very well organised.

The Sheppie Lions’ Table

The 11/12 April was a special weekend for club rugby in KZN with the Kokstad Rugby Club, the oldest rugby club in the province celebrating their 125th Anniversary, and they

certainly did it style. There can be no doubt about it, the East Griqualand rugby club has stood the test of time and has proved beyond any shadow of doubt that community rugby is the way to go and is unquestionably here to stay.

This milestone was commemorated by a day of rugby on 11th April. Our very own Lion Justin Hinchliff played for the Kokstad

High School Old Crocks which ended up being beaten by the Mighty Kokstad Blacks Old Crocks 17-7.

The main match of the day was played between the Cheetahs and the Cell C Sharks. The Cheetahs outplayed a young Cell C Sharks XV 35-18 in this Vodacom Cup game, which was well appreciated by the close on 4,000 spectators.
