MINISTER’S NOTES

OPERATION ANDREW—OCTOBER 22 John 1:40-41 provides some interesting information about Andrew, one of the Lord’s first disciples. “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.” What a wonderful commentary on Andrew! By the way, this wasn’t an isolated event. Andrew was

constantly bringing people to Jesus. That’s what disciples do! Taking our cues from Andrew, we have designated Sunday, October 22, as “Operation Andrew.” This is an intentional high-attendance Sunday in which we are asking everyone to invite a friend to church. Be a modern-day Andrew and bring someone to Jesus. Following are five quick, simple ways to help you bring a guest with you on Sunday, October 22. 1. Pray for Your Guest Pause and pray for the person you intend to invite right now. Pray for them regularly—before and after you extend the invitation. 2. Speak up with a Friendly Spirit Gulp! Opening your mouth is a fearful thing. However, “perfect love drives out fear” (1 Jn. 4:18). Jesus opened his hands to nails at the cross. Surely we can open our mouths for our friends. 3. Add a Caring Expression of Love We will not to host a luncheon on October 22, so you can take your friend to lunch after worship. Food always speaks care and compassion. Be a true friend, not just a religious recruiter. Couple your invitation to church with a gesture of friendliness. 4. Team Up with Others After worship you can join others for a group lunch at one of the restaurants in town. Or, you can invite a group over to your house for lunch. There are a lot of ways to be creative and courageous with the help of others. 5. Cultivate Compassionate Habits Toward Others Smile at people. Compliment people. Offer words of encouragement to people. Take an interest in others. There are open doors and opportunities all around us.

If we all do a little, God will surely do a lot to make “Operation Andrew” a success.
