FROM THE PASTORBy Pastor Lynn

We are about to embark upon the Season of Lent. Lent is the forty-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter (not including Sundays). It is historically a period of prayer, fasting, repentance and abstinence. These spiritual exercises (or disciplines) allow us to focus on our Christian faith and on our Savior Jesus Christ.

This year the Ash Wednesday Service (March 6) will be at 6:00 PM with the imposition of ashes. The ashes remind us that we are mortal, capable of sin, and in need of God’s Grace. This Lenten Season will be special because we will also be participating in a 21-day vigil of prayer and discernment as a part of our covenant experience with Lift Ministries. This will lead us into our year-long focus on Centering in Christ (which is also our Lent Study focus).

Our Good Friday Service will be April 19 at 7:00 PM and will focus on the life, suffering, and death of Jesus through a service of Tenebrae.

Easter Sunday is the beginning of a new season. Our New Day service is at 7:00 AM outside the front of the church. Together, we will celebrate the new day and the new season. We will remember Christ’s triumph over death and evil. We then will join together for a hearty breakfast in the fellowship Hall followed by Sunday School for all ages. Our regular time of worship is at 10:00 AM. There we be special music and a time to celebrate the Risen Christ!

I invite you to join us as we embark together on this new journey in faith. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to join us as well. Please continue to be prayerful as God leads us on this exciting journey … wherever it may lead!

Enjoy the journey! Pastor Lynn

FROM THE TRUSTSEESby Pam Parsons

Together we have completed another C-3 project creating a totally new look in our narthex and sanctuary.  Jeanine Lee of Rescon did a wonderful job providing the carpet tiles and installers at a cost of $6,000 less than the nearest competitor.  We hope you are all pleased with the results which we believe have created a new and fresh appearance.  We also hope you’ll support the next major C-3 project, the painting and repairing of the high vaulted walls and ceiling in our sanctuary.  Your exceptional support to date has resulted in a modernization of our entire church and a great first impression with guests and visitors.  Drew Patterson and his grandfather, Bill Greenman, have completed the new Worship Arts and Welcome Center.  It is beautiful and everyone should stop by and visit our new center.  Please notice the detail and quality in the construction and the beautiful art work, all completed by Bill.   We are creating an Emergency Preparedness facility in the closet area between the two breezeway restrooms will house all the items we will need (according to our Conference) in case of an emergency or natural disaster.  PARKING INFORMATION

Please be aware, the third Tuesday of EACH month is street cleaning day. NO PARKING is permitted on Deglet Noor from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Violators

WILL BE ticketed.FROM FINANCE

Where we need to be: $21,751 (*YTD budget)Where we are: $19,773.86 (*YTD giving and other income)Difference: ($1,977.14) Good News and Results that Make a Difference: We got off to a good financial start in the new year, resulting in our ability to meet all our expenses and obligations, including January apportionments.  Additionally, your C-3 contributions are such that Trustees had the funding available to coordinate the installation of the new carpet tiles in our narthex and sanctuary.  I’m sure you’ve seen the painting and other detail work that was completed by our own Trustees volunteers, which saved us a significant amount of money.  The company (Rescon) they retained to provide and install the new carpet tiles in the narthex and sanctuary saved us an additional $6,000 over their competition.  More good news:  on January 19th, eleven of our Under the Bridge volunteers provided 31 homeless men and women with desperately need food, clothing, blankets, batteries and hygiene items.  On January 26th, eleven more volunteers traveled to Joshua Tree to serve 45 homeless/disadvantaged 74 meals.  SUNDAY BEFORE SHROVE TUESDAY JOSHUA TREE FUNDRAISER

Ash Wednesday this year falls on March 6, so Shrove Tuesday is on March 5 and the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday is on March 3. Please join us immediately after church (11:15 am) on March 3 for a wonderful all -you-can-eat-pancake breakfast served with scrambled eggs, sausage links, fresh fruit, orange juice, milk and coffee.

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. In the United States Shrove Tuesday is known as “Madi Gras”, which means “Fat Tuesday” in French and also comes from the idea of using up food before Lent.We are suggesting a donation to the Joshua Tree project of $10, or more for each adult or $25, or more for a family.

LOVE TO STAY-SIX STEPS TO A HEALTHY MARRRIAGE

Bud and Marcia Wrisley invite you to join a small group short term study (7 weeks) for any committed couples (married or unmarried) to study Adam Hamilton’s book “Love to Stay-Six Steps to a Healthy Marriage”, beginning at 7pm on Friday, March 8, 2019. This first meeting will be an opportunity to get to know each of the participants in the group and to receive copies of the book. We will also establish the best time during the week to hold future meetingsBecause we plan to have the study in our home, or homes of other participants who so volunteer, we are going to limit the group to 5 other couples beside ourselves. Should more than 5 couples wish to join us, we will be glad to form another group beginning sometime in May.There will be a signup sheet in the narthex on February 24, or you can contact Bud Wrisley at 760-715-6163.

UNITED METHODIST WOMENBy Margie Schriener, President

Hopefully those who attended our last meeting feel a little bit better prepared for an earthquake. Now it is time to celebrate! The day is finally here! UMW will be 150 years old on Saturday March 23rd. 150 years ago, at a church in Boston 6 ladies decided something needed to be done for women in India. They decided to build a hospital to aid in the health problems there. A school for women soon followed and UMW was born. Millions of bake sales, bazaars and suppers later our work still continues. On Saturday March 16th we will celebrate 150 years of service to women and children throughout the globe with breakfast and a time to share a little of our history. There will be at time to share your favorite UMW memory, for when we tell our stories our legacy lives on. We will start the celebration at 9:00am in Fellowship Hall, and I invite all women, and men who are interested in knowing about who we are to join us. Have an older granddaughter, she is welcome as well. Hope to see you there.

THE SERVICE MINISTRY TEAM is a work in progress and moving right along with everyone’s help & guidance.Bud Wrisley tells us the Joshua Tree breakfast was a huge success. Thanks to the 11 volunteers, they fed 45 people many whom had seconds; totaling 74 meals. Bud talked about Maurice, he is almost always there to greet them and help them unload their supplies. He also knows the answers to the questions our team asks as to “where & what”… so he is a big help as they began to prepare the breakfast. The next trip up there will be March 16th. So plan on coming along and sign up on the volunteer sheet in the narthex. Our 'UNDER THE BRIDGE' event this last month was a reward for us in that we served 31 guests, which was more than December (because they thought we had stopped coming!!). They had received wrong information, and were very grateful to see us, and to know we had not deserted them. A BIG THANK YOU to our 12 volunteers. It was like a reunion to see folks again (like Catherine, our true artist).  No matter what is happening in their lives they are JOYFULL & GRATEFUL!  It brings joy to our hearts to see and hear these people praising God.  If you want to feel this joy come be a VOLUNTEER! You won't regret a moment of it.We are currently evaluating all of our outreach ministries to discern whether they are still vital and supporting the greater mission of our church. Outreach ministries that are currently in review are:CVRM (Rescue Mission)BACKPACKS (Back to School)SOLES FOR SOULSIf any of you feel that God has put a 'special mission' desire in your heart please know that we are here to help, remember you are never alone, and they all start with just one step.'THANKS BE TO GOD'
