A Newsletter for the Women and Friends ofShepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church

May 2015*****************************************************************************************

Upcoming EventsMay 1, 2015 - 10 Things Party - Join us for a great evening of fun. What is a ten things party you ask? Between now and May 1st, start collecting 10 items (or less) from your household that you may not want anymore, but you think someone else would want. This is NOT a white elephant party, so please no gag gifts or items that would probably be thrown away. We will meet in Eichele Hall at 6:30 p.m. When you arrive the rules of the party will be explained. In addition, we ask that you bring an appetizer to share and the beverage of your choice. All women are invited so the more the merrier.Prayer partners – If you signed up to be a secret prayer partner this year and you would like to get a prayer request to the woman that secretly picked your name, please email your request to Carol Ramsey at [email protected] and she will forward it on to your prayer partner. June 12, 2015 – Ladies Night Out – 6:30 - Let’s all meet at Mission Burrito on Tapo Street for some great food and fellowship. This event is open to all the women of the church and their friends, so the more the merrier. The festivities start at 6:30pm. Please RSVP to Linda Watters at [email protected] as we need to give the restaurant an accurate count.

THANK YOU

We Care For U Packages – Thank you to all who contributed to the We Care For U packages for our college youth and helped decorate the mugs and assemble the packages. We had a great time. This coming fall we will need lots of help to make about 40 more of these mugs so if you want to help out, please let Melanie Addy know and we will surely add you to the list of “mug makers”. For some of us that do not think we are very creative – just come and try and you will surprise yourselves.

On Sunday, April 19, 2015 Pastor Gary blessed the first set of 10 boxes that were to be sent out to our graduating college youth. Congratulations to John Darin, Rachel Herbert, Cooper Plyler, Jared Sinn, Garrett Squire, Ariana Stevenson, Steven Swanson, Colin Thompson, Hannah Westerdoll, and Samantha Yates. Watch soon for a write up in the Sunday bulletin about each of these young adults. In September we will start again to send these packages out to our college youth for next year. If you haven’t been contacted asking about your child studying at a college or you have a child that is graduating from college this spring and his/her name was missed, please contact Corrine Stevenson at [email protected]. Thank you.

Palm Sunday Continental Breakfast and Bake Sale - Thank you to ALL who helped and supported our Palm Sunday continental breakfast and bake sale. We raised $568.98 to help our youth go to Detroit this coming summer. That is fantastic!

Waffle Sunday – Thank you also to ALL who helped make our annual waffle Sunday another big success. We raised $490.00 which will also be given to help the youth going to the National Gathering in Detroit.

PurificatorsA small group of women got together on April 16, 2015 and began to embroider some new purificators to be used for communion. If anyone else is interested in helping make these, please contact Linda Watters. It was a great afternoon of learning, laughing and fellowship. Thank you to Helen Anderson for your dedication for the past several years in hand embroidering the Purificators.

BirthdaysEach month we are going to try and print the birthdays and anniversary dates of the women of the church in this newsletter only. They will not be printed in the whole church’s newsletter. So if you DO NOT want your name and information printed, please notify Corrine Stevenson or Linda Watters.

Some say that “Mother” is another name for Love. Think of your mother or a mother that you admire, and remember all the good things she did on your behave. These things could include helping you with homework, going to your soccer/baseball games, making your favorite cookies, or just listening when you needed an ear. This month our library cart will feature different types of books on Mothers, including inspirational and children’s books. And don’t forget the Grandmothers. There will be books available on grandmothers too.

We will also have books featured on women of the Bible. Meet Esther, Lydia, Naomi, Deborah and others, and see how these women coped with the problems of their times.

The book cart is out on the patio every Sunday. Come take a look.******************************************************************************************

Don’t forget MOM! That’s right, Mother’s Day is May 10th. Maybe you want to treat your special mom or grandma to a weekend lunch or a Sunday brunch. We have many restaurant gift cards to choose from when making that restaurant choice for your dining experience, among them Macaroni Grill, Black Angus, Buca di Beppo, Cheesecake Factory, Claim Jumper, Outback Steak House, PF Changs, Chili’s, Islands, Red Robin and many, many more. Perhaps you want to treat mom to brunch AND a movie, we also have scrip gift cards for Regal Cinemas. If you have a particular gift in mind and shop at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Bath and Body Works, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Target, Wal-Mart or CVS, we have gift cards for these stores and many others. Or maybe your mom or grandma is a chocolate lover, we have gift certificates for the ever popular See’s Candies. Whatever your GIFT idea may be, we have your GIFT card, or can get it for you. Scrip is the perfect gift for any mom, of any age. Mom does not reside locally? No problem, gift cards are ideal to mail. Just put your gift card in your Mother’s Day greeting and send it off, no wrapping, no extra cost. And remember that a percentage of every gift card you purchase is returned to our church.

Also, school graduation is just around the corner. Do you know someone who is graduating? We have many gift cards that would be perfect for that special grad, including all those listed above and many more! If the graduate is into sporting activities you might want to consider gift cards for Big 5, Golfsmith, Footlocker or REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.), but order these gift cards early for we don’t stock them on a regular basis. If the young graduate you are gifting likes music and games, we have iTunes and GameStop available. We will also have a limited supply of $5.00 and $10.00 cards for various stores designed for students who might want to give a thank you gift card to that “special” teacher. So as you can see, we have a gift card for almost anyone on your shopping list. Looking for a particular store and don’t see it in our scrip inventory, stop by the scrip table and pick up a complete list of all our participating vendors. Remember to buy or place your order early because our scrip sells fast and on a first come, first served basis.

In His Service,

Marvin and Jenny Kidd, SVLC Scrip Committee

and athletic teams are finishing their last sport of the year. The exciting events remaining in the minds of the students are, the last day of school and Kindergarten and Middle School graduations. Throughout the entire year, and in years to come, our students and all believers have the promise from Christ that He will always be with us to guide our steps and lead us on the path He has set for us. We thank God for His continued presence.

On Saturday, May 2, GSLS will have a spring boutique at the Trinity campus on the athletic field. The boutique will last from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The boutique is open to the community so we hope you will continue to support your school with your attendance.

On Wednesday, May 6, GSLS will have an Awards Dinner. On that evening students will be honored for their academic achievements, church and school attendance and their athletics accomplishments.

Saturday, May 9, GSLS will be present at the Annual Simi Valley Street Fair. Please come by and see your school’s booth.

Saturday, May 16, we are having a large E-waste collection. The site for the collection has yet to be determined. More information will follow.

The last day of school will be a half-day on Thursday, May 28. The school will hold its final chapel for the year, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Kindergarten graduation will take place the following day, May 29, at 6:00 p.m. The Middle School graduation will take place at 7:30 p.m. Both graduations will have receptions following the ceremonies for students, family and friends.

By the beginning of June, reports to the NLSA (National Lutheran School Accreditation) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) will be submitted. The accreditation for GSLS is handled by both organizations and each wants to make certain Good Shepherd is providing our students with the best education we can.

We wish God’s blessings to you, the members of both our supporting churches. May you find time to relax and be drawn closer to God this upcoming summer.

Give donations, shop and/or volunteer your time!! It all helps our Christian school ministry here in Simi Valley. The proceeds from the store are split between three schools that receive financial support from the store. The financial split is based on volunteer hours, so more volunteer hours from our church means stronger financial support to Good Shepherd. For further information please call: 805-523-7188.

Samaritan Center of Simi Valley Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church serves a meal to the less fortunate at the

Samaritan Center (located at 280 Royal Ave) on the 1st Wednesday of every month from 4:00-6:00 pm We need volunteers to buy and deliver food to the Samaritan Center,

AND…serve food or donate money *If you would like to help, please contact Yvonne Baird at 584-2521.

Thank you for your prayers and support for this important ministry.

SAMARITAN CENTERMany churches have programs that feed the hungry, but how many have three programs? Shepherd of the Valley has a long history of helping the hungry and it is done solely through designated offerings. Each month we take a collection for World Hunger and remit those funds to the ELCA, trusting them to disburse funds world-wide to feed the hungry. Each week, we host a meal in Eichele Hall “Still Waters Café” that is prepared in our kitchen under the leadership of Ray & Sally Valderrama. This is our most visible feeding ministry and it has been successful beyond the original vision, thanks to the generosity of the congregation and the Valderramas’ ability to write grant requests and publicize the ministry’s needs throughout our community. Our third feeding ministry is a quieter one, but feeds the most downtrodden amongst us at Samaritan Center. It is also funded through designated offerings. Rick & Yvonne Baird have led this ministry for many years and on the

1st Wednesday of each month, 4 volunteers serve the folks coming to dinner that night. The meal is the same each month – fried chicken, potato salad and fresh veggies, Kings Hawaiian rolls, juice and cookies. The guests are always very appreciative, love the meal and often take plates to go. Because of the “quietness” of this ministry, it is also the least supported with designated offerings and at year-end, the funds set aside for Samaritan Center were depleted. The monthly cost of the meal and supplies is approximately $180, and monthly guests range from 20 – 40 persons. Please help to support this quiet ministry that is appreciated so much by those who have no home and don’t have to go hungry because of our community’s efforts. Please consider a designated gift at some point during the year. Thank you!*************************************************************************************************
