Year 7 Gamelan Workshops and Concert
Our annual Indonesian Gamelan Workshops took place at the beginning of this month, taught
by Pete Smith, one of the country’s leading experts. On Wednesday 6 March 30
hardworking students, inspired by these sessions, demonstrated the skills they learned
(teamwork, listening, memory skills, co-ordination, patience and musicality among others)
performing on the beautifully carved and decorated genuine Indonesian instruments.
The concert started with 5 brave year 7 students playing and singing solos. Well done Teja,
Ana, Maddy, Amber and Nelson!
Apologies to those audience members who found standing room only at this very well
attended event!

Here’s what some of our students had to say about the experience:
A brilliant opportunity that not many get. A fun experience. The instruments were beautiful – the colours were lovely and bright. My favourite experience of 2019. Pete was funny and a good gamelan teacher. I loved when Pete came in and taught us gamelan. It was so interesting learning about all the instruments. My favourite was the big gong! An eye-opening experience into the intricate culture of authentic Indonesian music. It helped expand our knowledge. A fun way to learn about Indonesian instruments. An amazing experience with many new instruments I’ve never seen before. A lot of effort had been put into making the instruments.

WORK EXPERIENCE NEWS
Year 10 Experience of Work
One final message about the two week placements:
Please remember that if for any reason your child is unwell and unable to attend their
placement, the school AND the employer MUST be informed immediately. In the
exceptional circumstances where a student does not have a placement, they must come into
school at the usual time, dressed in school uniform, as normal. A special timetable has been
arranged for them. Good luck to all the students going out on placements; we hope that you
make the most of this great opportunity and please work hard to impress your employers!
See you in two weeks time!

World Book Day 2019
On Thursday 7 March we celebrated World Book Day with a Character Quest. Students
across all year groups were on a mission to track down as many literary characters
(teachers in clever disguise!) as they could in a quest to win a World Book Day prize.
Students scoured the school, travelling from Platform 9¾ to the Emerald City along the
way, and spotted a whole host of characters from Frankenstein and his monster to Captain
Hook and the Mad Hatter. The winners will be presented with a bundle of books in a
forthcoming assembly.
Joint First Prize - Elizabeth Auty 9EMQ and Reni Adeleye 9EKR
Second Prize: Skye Durham 9HET

FIA Women In Motorsport- The Girls on Track, European Final.
Louisa Bell, 12BCK, recently represented the UK in the European Final of the FIA Girls On
Track Karting Event, in Le Mans, France.
Louisa took part in National Selections at Silverstone in October 2018 and was selected as
one of 3 girls from 130, at an event organised by Dare to be Different. This selection
process included karting slalom, STEM activities and an interview.
Girls on Track is an FIA two year European Erasmus+ programme which was created to
encourage more young women between 13 and 18 years old to get involved in motorsport.
One of its main objectives is to increase the participation of young women in motorsport,
and break the stereotypes built historically and culturally through a free accessible
programme implemented in Europe across 9 national motorsport Federations involved in the
project. Louisa was supported by Motorsport UK.
27 girls were selected to take part in the event from across Europe.
The girls spent 4 days at the FIA FFSA Academy in Le Mans taking part in many activities
including;
Driving coaching in Karts
Video debriefing of driving
Physical tests and training, including reaction and memory tests.
Louisa started Karting at Daytona Milton Keynes three years ago, as part of her Duke of
Edinburgh Award.
