Transcript of Shemot

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)1 Now these are the names of the children of Isra’el who came to Mitsrayim with Ya‘akov, each man came with his household: 2 Re’uven, Shim‘on, Levi and Y’hudah; 3 Yissakhar, Z’vulun and Binyamin; 4 Dan and Naftali; Gad and Asher. 5 All the persons who came from the loins of Ya‘akov were seventy in number, but Yosef was in Mitsrayim already.6 Now Yosef died, and all his brothers and all that generation,

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)7 But the children of Isra’el were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied, and became exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.8 Now a new sovereign arose over Mitsrayim, who did not know Yosef. 9 He said to his people, “See, the people of the children of Isra’el are more and stronger than we.

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them or else they will increase and in the event of war, they shall also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us and so depart from the land.”11 So they set slavemasters over them to afflict them with forced labor, and they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pitom and Ra‘amses.

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they increased and grew; so they were in dread of the children of Isra’el 13 and the Mitsrites made the children of Isra’el to serve rigorously. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage in mortar and bricks and with all kinds of work in the field; all their work which they imposed on them was with rigour.

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)

15 And the sovereign of Mitsrayim spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shifrah and the other was named Pu‘ah, 16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

Shemot 1st Portion (Exo 1)

17 The midwives, however, feared Elohim; so they did not do as the sovereign of Mitsrayim had spoken to them, but they enabled the boys to live.

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 1)18 So the sovereign of Mitsrayim summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, that you have let the boys live?”19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Mitsrite women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come in to them.”

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 1)20 So Elohim was good to the midwives and the people increased and became very numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared Elohim, he gave them households.22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying: “Every son that is born you must throw into the river, and every daughter you shall allow to live.”

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 2)1 And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi, 2 and the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a lovely child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she took for him a wicker ark and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and laid it among the reeds at the edge of the river.

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 2)

4 His sister stood at a distance to know what would happen to him.5 Pharaoh’s daughter came down to wash herself, to the river, and her attendants were walking along the river’s bank. And she saw the ark among the reeds and sent her maidservant to get it.

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 2)6 She opened it and she saw the child. And behold, he was crying, and she had compassion on him, and she said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”7 His sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call for you a wet nurse from the Hebrew women, so that she shall nurse the child for you?”

Shemot 2nd Portion (Exo 2)8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go!” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I shall pay you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew up, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became like her son. She named him Moshe [pull out], and she said, “For I drew him from the water.”

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)

11 Now it came to pass in those days that Moshe grew up and went out to his brothers and looked at their burdens. And he saw a Mitsrite beating a Hebrew man of his brothers. 12 He turned this way and that way, and he saw that there was no man; so he smote the Mitsrite and hid him in the sand.

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)13 He went out on the second day, and behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the wicked one, “Why are you going to strike your neighbour?”14 And he said, “Who made you a man, a head and a judge over us? Do you intend to slay me as you have killed the Mitsrite?” Moshe became frightened and said, “Indeed, the matter has become known!”

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)15 Pharaoh heard of this matter, and he sought to kill Moshe; so Moshe fled from before Pharaoh. He dwelt in the land of Midyan, and he sat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midyan had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, and they filled the troughs to water their father’s flocks. 17 But the shepherds came and drove them away; so Moshe arose and rescued them and watered their flocks.

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)18 They came to their father Re‘u’el, and he said, “Why have you come so quickly today?”19 And they said, “A Mitsrite rescued us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew water enough for us and watered the flock.”20 He said to his daughters, “So where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him and let him eat bread.”

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)

21 Moshe agreed to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter Tzipporah to Moshe. 22 She bore a son, and he named him Gershom [sojourner there], for he said, “I was a sojourner in a foreign land.”

Shemot 3rd Portion (Exo 2)23 Now it came to pass in the course of those many days that the sovereign of Mitsrayim died. And the children of Isra’el groaned from the slavery, and they cried out. And their cry for help because of their slavery came up to Elohim. 24 Elohim heard their groaning and Elohim remembered his covenant with Avraham, with Yitz’chak and with Ya‘akov. 25 And Elohim looked upon the children of Isra’el, and Elohim took notice of them.

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)1 Now Moshe was shepherding the flock of Yitro his father-in-law, the priest of Midyan, and he led the flocks to the west side of the wilderness and came to the mountain of Elohim, even to Horev. 2 The messenger of יהוה appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. And behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the thorn bush was not being consumed. 3 So Moshe said, “I will go now and see this great sight—why the bush does not burn up.”

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)4 When יהוה saw that he had turned to see, Elohim called to him from within the bush, and he said, “Moshe! Moshe!”And he said, “Here I am.”5 And he said, “Do not come near here. Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place upon which you are standing is set-apart ground.”

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)6 And he said, “I am the Elohim of your father, the Elohim of Avraham, the Elohim of Yitz’chak and the Elohim of Ya‘akov.” And Moshe hid his face, because he was afraid to look at Elohim.7 And יהוה said, “I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Mitsrayim. And I have heard their cry because of their slave drivers, for I know their sorrows.

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)8 So I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Mitsrites and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey—to the place of the Kena‘ani, the Hitti, the Emori, the P’rizi, the Hivi and the Y’vusi. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the children of Isra’el has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression that the Mitsrites are oppressing them.

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)

10 So now, come. And I will send you to Pharaoh, and bring my people the children of Isra’el out of Mitsrayim.”11 But Moshe said to Elohim, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the children of Isra’el out of Mitsrayim?”

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)12 And he said, “For I will be with you, and this is the sign for you that it was I who sent you. When you take the people out of Mitsrayim, you will worship Elohim on this mountain.”13 And Moshe said to Elohim, “Behold I come to the children of Isra’el, and I say to them, ‘The Elohim of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)

14 Elohim said to Moshe, “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh (I will be what I will be),” and he said, “So shall you say to the children of Isra’el: ‘Ehyeh (I will be) has sent me to you.’ ”

Shemot 4th Portion (Exo 3)15 And Elohim said further to Moshe, “So shall you say to the children of Isra’el, ‘Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh (יהוה), Elohim of your fathers—the Elohim of Avraham, the Elohim of Yitz’chak and the Elohim of Ya‘akov—has sent me to you.’“This is my name forever, and this is how I should be mentionedin every generation.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 3)16 “Go, and gather the elders of Isra’el and say to them, ‘יהוה, the Elohim of your fathers—the Elohim of Avraham, Yitz’chak and Ya‘akov—appeared to me, saying: I have surely visited you and seen what has been done to you in Mitsrayim. 17 And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Mitsrayim to the land of the Kena‘ani, the Hitti, the Emori, the P’rizi, the Hivi and the Y’vusi—to a land flowing with milk and honey.’

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 3)18 “And they shall listen to your voice. And you and the elders of Isra’el shall come to the sovereign of Mitsrayim and you shall say to him, ‘יהוה the Elohim of the Hebrews, has met with us. And now, let us take a three days’ journey into the wilderness and offer up sacrifices to יהוה our Elohim.’ 19 But I know that the sovereign of Mitsrayim will not let you go, except through a strong hand.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 3)20 So I shall stretch out my hand and smite Mitsrayim with all my wonders which I shall do in their midst. And after that, he shall let you go.21 “And I shall put this people’s favour in the eyes of the Mitsrites, and it shall come to pass that when you go you shall not go empty-handed.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 3-4)22 Every woman shall ask from her neighbour and from the stranger who lives in her house objects of silver and objects of gold and garments, and you shall put them on your sons and daughters. And you shall plunder the Mitsrites.”1 Moshe answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say, ‘יהוה has not appeared to you.’ ”

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)2 And יהוה said to him, “What is that in your hand?”And he said, “A rod.”3 And he said, “Throw it on the ground.”And he threw it on the ground and it became a serpent, and Moshe fled from it. 4 And יהוה said to Moshe, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moshe reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)5 “That they may believe that יהוה the Elohim of their fathers—the Elohim of Avraham, the Elohim of Ya‘akov—has appeared to you.”6 And יהוה said further to him, “Now put your hand into your bosom.” So he put his hand into his bosom, and when he took it out, and behold, his hand was leprous, like snow.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)7 And he said, “Put your hand back into your bosom.” So he put his hand back into his bosom, and when he drew it out of his bosom, it was restored, like his other flesh.8 “And it shall come to pass, that if they do not believe you or heed the voice of the first sign, they shall believe the voice of the latter sign.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)9 But if they do not believe either of these two signs or heed what you say, you shall take some water from the river and pour it on the dry land. And the water that you take from the river shall become blood on the dry land.”10 Moshe said to יהוה, “O my יהוה, I am not eloquent, neither from yesterday nor since you have spoken to your servant, for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4) said to him, “Who gave man a mouth? Or who makes יהוה 11him dumb or deaf or seeing or blind? Don't you know that I am the one who does these things? 12 Now then go; I shall be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.”13 But he said, “I beseech you, O יהוה, send now your message with whom you would send.”

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)14 And יהוה’s displeasure was kindled against Moshe and he said, “Is there not Aharon your brother, the Levi? I know that he will surely speak. And behold, he is coming forth toward you, and when he sees you, he shall rejoice in his heart. 15 You shall speak to him, and you shall put the words into his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I shall teach you both what you shall do.

Shemot 5th Portion (Exo 4)

16 And he shall speak for you to the people, and it shall be that he shall be your mouth, and you shall be his elohim. 17 And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs.”

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)18 Moshe went and returned to Yitro, his father-in-law, and he said to him, “Let me go now and return to my brothers who are in Mitsrayim, and let me see whether they are still alive.”So Yitro said to Moshe, “Go in peace.” said to Moshe in Midyan, “Go, return to Mitsrayim, for all יהוה 19the men who sought your life have died.”

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)20 So Moshe took his wife and his sons, set them upon a donkey, and he returned to the land of Mitsrayim. And Moshe took the rod of Elohim in his hand. said to Moshe, “When you go to return to Mitsrayim, see יהוה 21all the wonders that I have put in your hand and do them before Pharaoh, but I will harden his heart, and he will not send out the people.

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘So said יהוה: My first-born son is Isra’el. 23 So I say to you, “Send out my son so that he may worship me.” But if you refuse to send him out, behold, I am going to kill your first-born son.’ ”24 Now he was on the way, in an inn, that יהוה met him and sought to put him to death.

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)25 So Tzipporah took a sharp stone and severed her son’s foreskin and cast it to his feet, and she said, “For you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26 So he released him. (Then she said, “A bridegroom of blood concerning the circumcision.”) ”.said to Aharon, “Go toward Moshe, to the wilderness יהוה 27So he went and met him on the mountain of Elohim, and he kissed him.

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)28 Moshe told Aharon all the words of יהוה with which he had sent him, and all the signs that he had commanded him to perform.29 So Moshe and Aharon went, and they gathered all the elders of the children of Isra’el, 30 and Aharon spoke all the words that had spoken to Moshe. And he did the signs before the eyes יהוהof the people,

Shemot 6th Portion (Exo 4)

31 And the people believed. And they heard that יהוה had visited the children of Isra’el and they kneeled and prostrated themselves.

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)

1 And afterwards Moshe and Aharon came and said to Pharaoh, “So said יהוה Elohim of Isra’el, 'Send out my people, and let them sacrifice to me in the wilderness.’ ”2 And Pharaoh said, “Who is יהוה that I should obey his voice to let Isra’el out? I do not know יהוה, neither will I let Isra’el out.”

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)3 And they said, “The Elohim of the Hebrews has happened upon us. Now let us go on a three day journey in the wilderness and slaughter to יהוה our Elohim, lest he strike us with a plague or with the sword.”4 But the sovereign of Mitsrayim said to them, “Why, Moshe and Aharon, do you take the people from their work? Go to your own burdens!”

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)5 And Pharaoh said, “Behold, now the people of the land are many, and you are stopping them from their burdens.”6 So, on that day, Pharaoh commanded the slave-drivers of the people and their foremen, saying, 7 “You shall not continue to give straw to the people to make the bricks like yesterday and the day before yesterday; let them go and gather straw for themselves.

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)8 But the amount of bricks they have been making yesterday and the day before yesterday you shall impose upon them; you shall not diminish it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and slaughter to our Elohim.’ 9 Let the work fall heavy upon the men and let them labourat it, and let them not talk about false matters.”

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)10 So the slave-drivers of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, “So said Pharaoh: ‘I am not giving you straw. 11 You go take for yourselves straw from wherever you find it, because nothing shall be diminished from your work.’ ” 12 So the people scattered throughout the entire land of Mitsrayim, to gather a gleaning for stubble.

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)13 And the slave-drivers were pressing them, saying, “Complete your work, the amount of each day in its day, just as when there was straw.” 14 And the foremen of the children of Isra’el whom Pharaoh’s slave-drivers had set over them were beaten, demanding, “Why have you not completed your task to make bricks like the day before yesterday, neither yesterday nor today?”

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)15 So the foremen of the children of Isra’el came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying: “Why do you do this to your servants? 16 Straw is not given to your servants, but they tell us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are beaten, and your people are sinning.”17 But he said, “You are idle, just idle! Therefore, you say, ‘Let us go, let us slaughter to יהוה.’

Shemot 7th Portion (Exo 5)18 And now, go and work, but you will not be given straw. Nevertheless, the full amount of bricks you must deliver.”19 The foremen of the children of Isra’el saw them in trouble, saying, “Do not diminish the number of your bricks, the requirement of each day in its day.” 20 They met Moshe and Aharon standing before them when they came out from Pharaoh’s presence.

Shemot 7th Portion-Maftir (Exo 5)

21 And they said to them, “May יהוה look upon you and judge you, for you have made us loathsome in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, to give a sword in their hand to kill us.”22 So Moshe returned to יהוה and said, “O יהוה, why have you harmed this people? Why have you sent me?

Shemot Maftir (Exo 5-6)

23 Since I have come to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has harmed this people, and you have not delivered your people.”1 And יהוה said to Moshe, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
