FATHER’S DAY STALL/SOUTHERN STARS

If your child is either a performer in Southern Stars or attending the Southern

Stars performance excursion this Friday, 31 August, they can bring their $6.00 to

purchase a gift from the Father’s Day stall tomorrow, Wednesday, 29, Thursday,

30 or Friday, 31 August 2018 to the school office where it will be arranged that

your child receives a gift from the stall prior to this Friday so as not to miss out!!

WHITE ELEPHANT STALL

Once again we are calling for donations for our White Elephant Stall. For those

of you who have been here for a few years, the origins of the term ‘white

elephant’ will not be a mystery. For those of you who have just joined us or are

forgetful, read on…..

White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive

undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became

dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient

We don’t want to ruin anyone with our White Elephant stall, but we do require

anything you may have at home that still works, but you don’t use. Donations of

any good quality, second hand items would be greatly appreciated. All unsold

items will be forwarded to charity. If all donations could be dropped off at the

school office, this would be greatly appreciated. Items that are too large or

numerous for the school office, just call the school and we can organise a time to

meet you near the hall or our new storage area behind the Kinder building. Your

neighbours may also have items that are suitable that they can donate as well.

At the end of each year, we have a number of families who move to another area and leave our school. If you know your child will not be a part of this school in 2019, it will assist our planning enormously if you could let the school know now. TOURNAMENT OF MINDS COMPETITION

Rebecca Kencevski took our Tournament of

Minds team to compete at the University of

Wollongong last Sunday. TOM is one of those

activities where the value lies in the journey

rather than the destination and the growth I’ve

seen in this group of kids over the last ten

weeks has been exceptional.

It was also great to watch former SPS students

who have continued with their TOM journey.

Former students were competing as part of

teams entered by three high schools, with one of these teams being comprised of all but one former SPS

students. Great work kids and Miss K!

EDUCATION WEEK

Thanks for your support during Education Week. It

was great to see so many family and extended

family members in the school to see what the kids

have achieved this year.

FARMER MUFTI DAY

Thanks for your support of our Farmer Mufti Day. With your support, we will be sending $1116.00 to the

charity, ‘Aussie Helpers’.

PRIMARY ETHICS

We are now able to offer Ethics classes to 2D, 5/6G, 4M and 3T as

an alternative to Special Religious Education. Please contact the

class teacher if you are interested in this program for your child.

SOUTHERN STARS

After many hours of rehearsal, and the

organisation of Linda Jackson, our students are

looking forward to being part of Southern Stars

this weekend. Southern Stars is one of the

Department of Education and Communities

premier creative events, showcasing the abilities

of more than 3000 students from across NSW. It is

held annually at the WIN Entertainment Centre,

and features vocalists, dancers, circus performers,

drama students, a 700 voice choir and live orchestra. A huge weekend for this group.

KINDER 2019

We will be finalising our Kindergarten 2019 enrolments in Term 3. If you plan to

send your child to this school in Kinder in 2019, it is important that we know

now. Please call into the school office and pick up enrolment forms.

Alternatively, if you know someone who wants to send their child to this school

in 2019, please pass on this message. The process for enrolling a child in a school

(particularly your first one) can be confusing. If you know someone in this

position, please ask them to call the school and we will be only too happy to help.

WORKBOOK PACKAGES/VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Thanks to those parents who have paid for their child’s workbook package and voluntary contribution.

Students have already started to use these materials and your co-operation in paying these fees is appreciated.

Our voluntary contributions are always itemised and set below the amount recommended by the Department

of Education and Communities. Since 2012, we have not asked parents to buy student textbooks in

Mathematics, or any other subject. Teachers here create their own (and better) resources. To send your child

to a private primary school in this area will cost between $2100.00 and $6000.00 per year. Our fee of $40.00

per child or $35.00 per child (three or more) makes a year at this school the best bargain you will ever get!

PEER SUPPORT SESSION 3: TYPES OF FRIENDS ‘Types of friends’ was the focus in Peer Support

last week. Children explored what encourages

them to form friendships with different people

(common interests, admirable qualities, etc).

Through various activities children identified that

their friends can fall into the categories of ‘best

friends’, ‘friends’ and ‘people we know’. Children

also discussed the fact that friendships can change

over time for various reasons. You may like to

discuss with your child the different friends they

have in their lives and how friendships may change. Some friends may be more important at different times in

their lives. Year 6 students and selected Year 5 assistant leaders have been doing a wonderful job leading their

groups.

SPARKS FLY IN 4/5S

4/5S are having a great time with Mrs Shirlaw each Wednesday undertaking their current Science unit based around electricity. Each week students are learning about different forms of electrical energy and have had the opportunity to create model closed circuits. This unit of work was supported by an excursion to the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre at Killalea State Park last Tuesday. Over the course of the day, students cooked Smores in solar ovens, generated ‘movement’ energy to power light globes and used the blustery weather to see how wind powered appliances worked. This was a great day, which was thoroughly enjoyed by teachers and students alike.

PERSUASIVE WRITING IN 1J

In 1J we have been practicing our convincing skills! With a new term brings a new and exciting writing opportunity. This term we are focusing on persuasive writing and how to best convince others of our opinion.

We have been learning how important it is to respect others point of view and the significance of giving reason for one’s own opinion when convincing others.

As a class we have been “persuaded” that chicken schnitzel is the best dinner option and that handball is the best game to play at lunchtime.

We have also expressed our opinions on road safety and whether “you should wear swimmers in the pool”.

Some of the reasons we came up with are;

- “Secondly, you should wear swimmers because it’s a bit rude when you get out” – Chase. - “I strongly believe children should hold hands with an adult so they don’t get run over by a car”- Caden - “I feel that children should hold an adults hand when crossing the road because it’s the law”- Kealeigh - “I feel like you should wear swimmers in the pool because you will get sun burnt really badly if you

don’t”- Skye

SH’ARCHIES 2018

This year we celebrated our Principal, Dr John MacDonald, as we created a portrait of ‘a significant member of

our community’. What a joy it was to see 480 Mr Mac’s hanging in the windows from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Many art styles were covered including detailed pencil sketches, texta outlines, paintings, digital art and even

abstract art influenced by the likes of Picasso. Each class had three winners: The Packer’s Prize (chosen by the

teacher), The People’s Choice (voted for by class mates) and The Sh’Archie Winner (chosen by a student, parent

and teacher representative). Our winners were awarded with a packet of coloured pencils at assembly last

week and we congratulate everyone on a great job!

KID’S CAFÉ NEWS

WINE FUNDRAISER

The P & C have decided to try something a little different this year and have a wine

fundraiser. We have six varieties of wine available to choose from each individually

named with our school and village theme, and with a label that depicts the iconic school

Figtree. The wine is from Oak Room Wines who source the wine from all over Australia.

You can order online at their website, which is outlined below, or you can use the printable form attached to

the email (copies available in the office also) sent home to all families, and hand it in to the school office. The

cut-off date for ALL orders is this Friday, 31 August, and NO LATE ORDERS CAN BE ACCEPTED.

They will deliver the wine to the school, at no cost, in individual orders, and they will then be able to be picked

up in mid-September with a date TBA. When you are checking out, select ‘Free pickup from fundraiser’. This

will ensure that your wine will be included with the delivery. Ask your friends, family, neighbours, cousins,

anyone who you know loves to drink wine and support a good cause. We make approximately $40.00 per dozen

sold, all of which goes back into the school. Father’s day is coming up, and they would also make great

Christmas or work presents.

‘ICONIC’ - SOUTHERN STARS 2018

Rehearsals for Southern Stars 2018 ‘ICONIC’ are in full swing with students taking part in a wide range of dance, music, drama and vocal rehearsals around the Illawarra - and the State.

‘ICONIC’, featuring 3000 public school students, will take place over four performances at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Friday, 31 August (10.00 am and 7.30 pm) and Saturday, 1 September (2.00 pm and 7.30 pm).

This year ‘ICONIC’ features three circus schools, the NSW Millennial Marching Band, 2000 dancers, a 600 strong choir, a full orchestra, our hugely popular boys vocal ensemble, our new Aboriginal Dance Ensemble ‘Yanggaa Garaba’, featuring an eight strong didgeridoo group, and the top featured student vocalists and performers in Southern NSW.

STEWART HOUSE CLOTHING APPEAL 2018

In the near future, we will be sending home a Stewart House Clothing Appeal Bag for our second and final

collection for 2018 – these bags need to be returned to school no later than this Friday, 31 August - If you

require any further bags, please call into the school office - please support this worthwhile charity which is the

major and only charity supported by the Department of Education and Communities.
