Welcome to Autumn and to the second edition of the BDOC Newsletter for 2018! It feels like the year has only just begun, but already we have achieved a lot at BDOC. The dog sports have all been very busy with training and attending trials and competitions. The club has hosted an agility trial as well as a double obedience trial in the past few weeks, and you can find reports for both trials in this edition. A big thank you to everyone who helps to make these trials happen.

On the canine companion front, the Committee reps Lyndal and Sandra have been busy organising some events for our hardworking instructors. We were visited by Paul Welsh (The Canine Coach) who gave a short presentation on dog reactivity in February, and we are currently running a series of reactive dog workshops with Alyssa Rankin (Canine Compass).

If you are feeling unhappy with your dog’s behaviour at the club or at home, we would recommend a one-on-one appointment with either Paul or Alyssa. As you know, our club is fully staffed by volunteers, and while we are all dog enthusiasts, we are usually quite hard pressed to find the time to provide help with issues outside the canine companion syllabus.

With Assessment Week just past and Session 2 starting up this week, I’d like to remind everyone to be aware of their dog’s space and their frame of mind as you are moving around the paddock. You will find that they are much more focussed and interested in training if their head is clear.

Some tips to help you with this are:• When you arrive for class, leave your dog in the car

while you collect your training card... it’s a lot easier without a dog pulling you under the table!

• When entering and exiting the paddock, do so quickly and always close the gate behind you

• Manage your dog’s space and what they can access by controlling the leash

• Encourage your dog to check in with you (without you having to cue for attention) by rewarding offered attention frequently

SCRATCH OUR BACK!BDOC is run exclusively by members volunteering their time to help.

Interested in volunteering? Skills we are looking for include administration, cleaning, grounds maintenance, information technology, weeding, events assistants, shed tidying, catering for events, class assistants, instructors and lots more.

Volunteer as little or as much as you like and are able to. Every bit helps and you get the chance to make more ‘doggie’ friends.

See the BDOC office if you would like to join our volunteer group.

The Belconnen Dog Obedience Club (BDOC) was formed in 1975 to provide dog training instruction and facilities for people living in northern Canberra.

The Club’s main activity is our canine companion classes, which teach basic

obedience and valuable life skills to pet dogs and their families. Our canine companion classes are open to fully vaccinated dogs of all breeds.

We also offer training in dog sports including agility, dances with dogs, flyball, trialling obedience, and rally obedience, and have many teams ranging from beginners to the top trial and competition levels.

The aims of our Club include:• Having fun with our dogs• Promoting responsible dog ownership• Helping our members to become proficient dog

trainers in general obedience, and also in the dog sports of their choice

• Helping our members to develop enjoyable relationships with their dogs

• Promoting the pursuit of recognised dog sports

BDOC is supported with much appreciated financial assistance from ACT Sport and Recreation Services and the Department of Education and Training ACT.

Our Club is staffed and run by a terrific group of volunteers, from the Club’s Committee, office and shop workers, to our incredibly dedicated team of instructors.

If you have enjoyed your time at BDOC, please consider volunteering! We are always on the look out for helpers for our various trials and events, and we run training for new canine companion instructors twice a year in January and June. If you’re interested, please email the Club at [email protected].

Welcome to our new beginners classes and to those continuing on from Session 1.

BDOC hosted the BBQ at the National Sheep Dog Trial at Hall on the 17th & 18th March 2018. This is one of our major fundraising events. I would like to thank all BDOC members to helped out over the weekend to make this the most successful BBQ we have held at the Trials. Thank you to everyone.

Just a reminder: at the club we have the yellow bandana program. If you see a dog wearing one of these it means “give me space”. This does not mean the dog is aggressive and they are a danger to you or your dog. It means that they find the club environment overwhelming or exciting and they need to be given their space.

Handlers may elect to put a yellow bandana on their dogs for a number of reasons, their dog may be overly excited to play with everyone, their dog may be recovering from

an injury and needs to remain as calm as possible, or their dog is learning to be more confident around other dogs. The yellow bandana program ensure that everyone has a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience at BDOC.

As always, we are short on volunteers! If you would like to become a volunteer at the BDOC club, please see someone in the office or email to [email protected].

Good luck for 2018 and it may be time to consider one of the dog sports. Please speak to your instructor or whoever is in the office. More information on the dog sports offered at BDOC can be found on the club website.

The National Sheepdog Trials are held every year in March at the Hall Showgrounds, attracting amazing working dogs and their handlers and quite a few interested onlookers. It is a fun event to watch and has its fair share of characters.

BDOC volunteers run the catering and BBQ for the event and it is one of our major fundraising activities for the year. This year the Club raised almost $3000. This money goes towards watering the turf, buying equipment for the various dogsports, keeping the electricity on, and various

other maintenance activities. Fundraising is a crucial part of keeping the Club going as we don’t receive financial support and rely on fundraising and members funds.

Thanks to our Club President Christine Bates for organising the BDOC participation.

Below are some photos from the Sheepdog Trials – how about volunteering next year? You get to watch the fabulous sheepdogs in action!

The club hosted very successful late summer twilight agility and jumping trial at the club grounds on Saturday 17 March 2018.

It was the first trial conducted by new trial manager Barbara Brown and trial secretary Fiona Fraser, who did an outstanding job keeping everything in the background going, whilst still managing to run their own dogs.

The event attracted a total 222 entries across the two disciplines of agility and jumping.

The courses were set by our judges for the evening, who were from New South Wales: Judy Van Der Vegt , who

judged the Jumping events and Terry Griffin, who judged the Agility events.

The temperature at the start of the trial was a pleasant low 20s that seemed to suit most dogs.

Many people stayed for the judges’ presentations at the end of the night – with Terry commenting that he was particularly impressed with the skills and potential shown in many of the novice runs.

Our next trial will be an agility ribbon trial on Monday 23 April, starting at 6pm. The judge for the event will be Lucy Williams.

AGILITY PROFILE: LEANNE & IZZYWritten by Lisa Borthwick

This edition, we profile Leanne Holgate and Izzy, who were awarded the BDOC 2017 Agility Encouragement Award.

Who are the members of your team and what is your background in dog sports?Prior to welcoming Izzy into my life I had very limited experience with obedience training and absolutely no experience with any dog sports.

How did you start participating in agility? How long have you been competing in agility together as a a team?Companion classes were a challenge, sitting still and being quiet was not one of Izzys strong points. I knew Izzy needed more than being stuck in the back yard, she needed mental stimulation as well as physical exercise.

At the end of the year BDOC offered a come and try day for all the dog sports so I thought I would come along and see if any sparked an interest in Izzy. Izzy enjoyed hunting for food as she will do almost anything for a free feed but it was the Agility course that she took an instant liking to tunnels and dog walks.

After many, many months of training out in the cold of the grounds at BDOC we entered in our first moc trial at CDC where a lovely novice course was set up, unfortunately the tool shed was of more interest than this great course. Fast forward 3 months and we entered our first novice jumping trial where Izzy claimed her first qualification and gained a second placing.

What title/s have you achieved in the past year (or any other achievements)? We don’t have any titles yet as we have only entered in one trial but I am very proud of Izzy being nominated for the encouragement award and for successfully completing a full course under trial conditions, she had a great time and that is the most important thing.

Were there any specific challenges you have overcome during training (weaving, tunnels etc)? What are your training tips? There are always challenges to overcome in dog training, one day your dog can be doing a brilliant job on a piece of equipment and the next day they look at it as if they have not seen it before.

My tips would be to know your dog and how to get the best out of them and most of all keep things fun for you and your dog, if your dog enjoys the activity they will want to keep doing it and working for you.

Describe a moment in any of the trials you’ve competed in that you would do differently if you could run it again? Our first agility trial I struggled to get focus and attention from Izzy prior to starting our run, we started off at the speed of light, over the jumps, through the tyre and then we hit the A frame and it was all downhill from there. I lost connection and focus of my dog who then decided to complete her own version of the course, it was late and a big ask for her to stay on task. On a positive note she had fun and great drive.

What does the coming year hold for your team? While there are many handler skills that need work one of my big goals for this year is to try and manage my dog anxiety issues and get her comfortable in different environments so that she can maintain focus, stay on course and we can have fun together.

What keeps you coming back to training at BDOC?There is so much on offer at BDOC beyond the companion classes with activities to suit all dogs, there is always someone willing to help and offer suggestions on how to resolve particular issues you are having with your dog or how to achieve your goals whatever they may be.

OBEDIENCE TRIALWritten by Maelyn Draper

In blistering hot conditions, BDOC hosted our first double obedience trial for the year on Saturday 7th April. We were very pleased to have received a very good number of entries for the lower classes! Many thanks to our team behind the scenes - Elaine, Maelyn and Charlie - for their work in getting things organised for the trial.

Thanks also goes to our stewards on the day - Gemma, Jenny, Sandra, Loris, Christina, Christine, Maelyn, Heather, Judith, Rhonda and Lara. If you are currently attending

any of BDOC’s dog sport classes but aren’t ready to compete yet, please considering volunteering to steward at trials or competitions. It’s a really great way to see what happens in the ring without the pressure of being entered yourself, and you will learn a lot about your sport just from watching others compete in it. It may even give you the confidence to give competing a go for yourself sometime!

Congratulations to all the teams listed below that achieved qualifying scores!
