huntInG hutWe’ve all grown up with the idea of a log cabin deep in the woods. It’s not difficult to close your eyes and imagine the sounds and smells of forest life—the smoking campfire, resinous trees, and dawn chorus. It’s the stuff of childhood adventures —packing up a rucksack and stumbling upon a secret hideaway —and this little rustic hut in the middle of sweden’s svartadalen forest has more than a touch of hansel and Gretel about it.

But don’t be fooled. This isn’t a pastiche of some rural retreat.

It’s a living, breathing, working hut, built more than thirty years

ago and still used as a resting point for hunters on the trail of

deer and elk. As with many log cabins, the choice of materials

and decor is dictated by practicality not fashion. Out here in the

Swedish wilderness, any furniture and fittings have to be carried

from the nearest road, so it makes sense to construct as much as

possible from your immediate surroundings. Almost everything

in the hut was made using wood felled from the pine forest. From

the outdoor benches to the pot hooks and peg rails, each piece

is cut, carved, and whittled from what’s at hand. The walls, floors,

and ceiling are, of course, timber, but it’s hard not to admire

the ingenuity of someone who can also create seating, tables,

cupboards, chopping boards, hanging hooks, stools, tools,

shelves, and even door handles from the same simple material.

Warmth and shelter (left) A small wood-burning stove kicks out

companionable warmth in this tiny hunting hut. Firewood is kept

neatly stowed under the handmade storage cupboard, while peg

rails and hooks keep all the essentials out of harm’s way.

Fireside stories (opposite) Simple, handcrafted benches circle

the open campfire, perfect for sitting and telling tales after the

sun’s gone down. Almost everything in this idyllic spot was cut and

carved from local forest timber.
