honorary DeGrees

Janet suzman Dlitt (honoris causa)

Janet Suzman has long distinguished herself as an actor and director in theatre, film, and television.

While a student at the University of the Witwatersrand she was an active voice against discrimination and spoke out against the Extension of University Education Bill which paved the way for the extension of apartheid into higher education. Following its promulgation into law in 1959 she left South Africa for England.

She made her debut in Billy Liar at the Tower Theatre in 1962, and in 1963 joined the Royal Shakespeare Society where she played many Shakespearean heroines. Her performance as Cleopatra in 1973 received rave reviews and is regarded as the definitive performance of the role. More recently (2007) critics lauded her performance as Volumnia in Coriolanus.

In the 1960s and 1970s she appeared in a number of acclaimed British television drama productions, and in 1971 she ventured into film. Her first role, Empress Alexandra in Nicholas and Alexandra, won a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

She has been a constant visitor to South Africa. Recently she directed Othello and The Good Woman of Sharpville at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, and her visits to university drama departments across the country continue to inspire students starting their careers in drama.

antony sherDlitt (honoris causa)

Antony Sher is a multi-talented South African-born writer, actor, theatre director and painter. He was raised in South Africa before going to London to study at the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art between 1969 and 1971. For a while Sher performed with the Gay Sweatshop theatre group before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982. His performance in the title role of Richard III in 1984 was crowned with an Olivier Award for Best Actor, and in 1997 he won another Olivier Award for Stanley.

Sher’s acting success extends to film – including performance as Disraeli in Mrs Brown and chief weasel The Wind in the Willows. His television work includes The History Man (1981) and The Jury (2002).

He has also written extensively, both fiction and non-fiction. His fiction includes his memoirs Woza Shakespeare: Titus Andronicus in Africa (1997), Year of the King (1985), Characters (1990) Beside Myself (2002), and Primo Time (2005); and non-fiction includes Middlepost (1988), The Indoor Boy (1992), Cheap Lives (1995), and The Feast (1998). His plays include ID (2003), Primo (2004) and The Giant (2008).

In addition to writing and acting, Sher expresses his creativity in painting. His works include Characters (1989), The Audience (2005) and a portrait of Kathryn Hunter (current).

His links with South Africa remain strong and he returns annually. He has directed controversial work in South Africa, and his courageous writing on gay identity has created a learning opportunity for others. He has presented master classes and directed at the Baxter.

In 2005 he directed Breakfast with Mugabe, and in 2007 he produced the Channel 4 crime documentary Murder most Foul which chronicles the Cape Town murder of Brett Golden and Richard Bloom.

DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Drama:Jennifer Gay MorrisThesis Title: Own-made in the (post-) new South Africa: a study of theatre originating from selected townships in the vicinity of Cape Town

Gay Morris holds a BA, a PG Specialist Teacher’s Diploma in Speech and Drama and an MA degree from UCT. She is also an Associate of the Drama Board in London. Since 1976 she has taught in the Department of Drama and during these years has made a sustained contribution to curriculum development at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Her favourite teaching areas are in the areas of theatre voice, applied drama, theatre in South Africa and theatre research.Gay Morris’ PhD thesis develops a framework for the analysis and description of theatre practices evident in selected Cape Town townships during the past six years. It draws on analysis of performances and interviews and is conceptually informed by theatrical event theory and Bourdieu’s practice theory. The study offers an account

of the interrelated aesthetic, social and political dimensions of township theatre. It considers the relation between the whole - the gestalt – and the particular local theatrical event. It elucidates the theatre’s connections to its locality and local culture, its organizational and aesthetic character, its idiosyncrasies and performance strengths, its concerns, and its struggle for distinction within the field of theatre in Cape Town. A conceptualization for the analysis of township theatre emerges which emphasizes the interactions between context and aesthetic forms and the relation between the ideological, the social, the aesthetic and the kinaesthetic. While this conceptualization has generated a description of theatre-making in Cape Town’s townships in particular, the broader conceptual framework is applicable to theatre anywhere. Gay Morris’ PhD thesis challenges scholars in the field of South African theatre to move beyond conceptions of theatre located in the freedom struggle, to turn their attention to performance-based practices as well as published play texts, and to consider the social, political and cultural forces affecting contemporary theatre practitioners and our theatrical identity sixteen years after the advent of South Africa’s democratization.
