Theme : Hope Hope is set against its opposite

despair. Most of the inmates are afraid of hope because they think it will destroy them. In contrast, Andy didn’t give up hope. He believes hope gives people a reason to live, a sense of freedom.

He does not only maintains hope himself, but tries to give others the hope that life can and will get better, even in prison.

Introduction•“The Shawshank Redemption” is the movie that can help anyone to stay positive.

•Basic source of inspiration for me in this movie is the plot. - Plot revolves around two characters in the jail. Andy who has seen the worst, but still is hopeful, and Red who has got “institutionalized” due to respect that he has earned in the jail by being sharp, but is fearful.

Main BodyThe feel of redemption and hope that is received from this

movie is indescribable. Continuous battle between hope and fear haunts one the

most. -Specially, the scene where Andy posts letters to

town authorities for opening up a library in the jail. Finally, he succeeded in getting funds for the library.

Another part of the movie which was really inspiring when Andy started teaching a new inmate, Tommy Williams, reading and writing.

Main BodyThe movie reached its climax when Andy was about to

escape from the jail. The suspense and the drama were totally jaw-dropping for me. This movie had such enthusiasm.

When Andy escapes and comes out of the drain, he takes off his shirt and raises his hands in the feeling of redemption; this was stunning. Many would say, “This is it. This is the inspiration I had been looking for many years”.

Last scene of the movie is the best scene of the movie. -Red who was fearful in the beginning becomes

hopeful with joy and feeling of friendship. This movie is full of adventures, drama, surprises and most of all - suspense.

Main Body“Fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free” is the

tagline of the movie. This line has always inspired one and freed one from all kinds of fears.

Every time one watches it, one will feel a new warmth and hope.

-Considering, there are two kinds of people in this world, ones who are hopeful (Andy) and strive, and others who get satisfied easily and don’t try much

as the fear of something new always stops them from taking the leap (Red).  

ConclusionThe “Shawshank Redemption” is such a movie that can

remove fear and frustration. It will capture one’s imagination and inspire so much that

one will always be hopeful no matter what life throws at.

CinematographyA lot of aerial views were really nice in creating a setting

which a viewer will notice immediately.Guards are not often shot personally and it helps them

remain as guards.The scenes that are inside the prison are very dark as they

make the viewer feel like they too are apart in the prison with the characters.

Some shots during the roof scene are spectacular.The aesthetic and purposeful normality of things really adds

to the atmosphere.This movie had received 7 oscar nominations and 30 other

nominations as well as won 19 international awards.
