Authors NoteIn the early 1940s a lot of things were illegal, though out WWII.The war was deadly. People couldn’t go anywhere. Shen Mao and his friends went to every place they can go but the mountains. Children couldn’t have fun during that deadly time period. Food may be casual these day, but not during the war. Death may be scary but it happens all day. We had to live years of this situation. Anyone could die, at any time.

The Hike

“Mom! Can I go play with my friends?

Please?” I begged.

I looked out the window at the terrific

weather. Birds chirp and the suns heat brighten

through the window shining on my bed.

“Alright, fine you can go out today. But you

will need your gas mask,” Mom replied.

I peeked over at my bed, the dirty, grey and

big gas mask lying on my bed. I was reluctant of

wearing it but just to make Mom happy I had to.

My friends and I gathered at the Village Lake.

We voted on where to go, there wasn’t much

Page 6: shawn02pd2018 identityportfolio

choice though because of the war restriction. But

we still decided.

“How about the soldier camping road? It has

a amazing view.” Qing Huan suggested.

“No, we go to that place too often.” I retorted.

“Hey, Shen Mao how about the mountains? I

think none of us has explored that place yet.”

Long Rei told us.

“Great idea, why don’t we go to the

mountain!” I said. I imagined that this will be a

exciting journey.

“But we couldn’t go pass the restriction

mark. Thats where the soldiers are.” Long Rei

added

Everyone got ready and started hiking. The

hilly mountain slowed our pace down, rocks

dropping but we still managed to pass the

resting place. The sun’s heat warmed my back.

My friends and I kept hiking but the heat was

unstoppable. Our persistence was showed and

got to a shady place. We took a nap. We charged

up the mountain immediately.

“We’re nearly there guys, you can see the

top!” Shen Mao panted loudly.

“Finally!” Qing Huan screamed.

Meanwhile, we reached the top of the

mountain.

Page 8: shawn02pd2018 identityportfolio

“O...O...Oh m..m... my g..od! This view is

staggering! The navy and clean lake is just to ”

Shen Mao shouted. I hope I could come here

more often.

“Our persistence has made this astonishing

view” He Dong said in a very positive tone.

Suddenly, Qing Huan slipped and slid down

the cliff through the spiky branches and rocks,

leaving drops of blood

“What! What are you guys doing! We got to

go save him.” I screamed.

We climbed down lower as then we heard

pain and saw blood dripping on the hill . The

branches on the mountains was wrecked. We

Page 9: shawn02pd2018 identityportfolio

charged down to the bottom and saw Qing Huan

covered with dark red blood and scars. He

couldn’t have looked worse. My sadness was

also boosting through me. Long Rei and I carried

Qing Huan over the mountain as fast as a

cheetah. Our hands were fully covered with

shiny red blood. The blood was blasting out of

his legs. We piggybacked Qing Huan. In speed we

carried him to the shady tree. I hope this didn’t

happened. Long Rei carried Qing Huan from that

place. We finally reached the village then.nobu

I looked after him for days and days, Qing

Huan fortunately healed. Furthermore we never

went out of the village.
