Shawn Hatch's preferred areas of practice are Pensions & Benefits lawand Corporate / Commercial / M&A law.
Pension and Benefits
Mr. Hatch's pension and benefit practice covers:
• The establishment of new pension and benefit plans• Negotiation of agreements with service providers such as investment
managers, custodians, actuaries, benefit consultants, carriers andunderwriters
• Advising on trustee duties and obligations as well as plan governanceand administration
• Advising on plan mergers, amalgamations, reorganizations andwind-ups
• Facilitating the resolution of pension and benefit disputes betweenlabour and management.
Mr. Hatch has extensive experience acting for and advising jointlytrusteed boards. Mr. Hatch regularly acts as counsel for a number ofprovincewide public sector pension and benefit plans, as well as anumber of multi-employer and single-employer pension plans.
Mr. Hatch has also acted as special counsel to government in respect ofan initiative to restructure provincewide public sector pension plans asjointly trusteed plans. In addition, Mr. Hatch has acted as special counselto facilitate the restructuring of the pension plan of a major utility in theprovince.
Mr. Hatch has acted as an independent third party appointee of anindustrial inquiry commission to settle the terms of a provincewidebenefit plan.
Corporate Commercial
Mr. Hatch maintains a diverse and active corporate practice includingacting for a major forestry company. Mr. Hatch has acted in respect of a

number of significant acquisitions, tax-driven corporate reorganizationsand a number of domestic and foreign joint ventures.
