Suggested Route: From Thruway exit 18 (New Paltz), go west on State Route 299 to the junction of State Route 44/55. Turn right and continue northwest on 44/55. [Side Trip – Turn left at Hamilton Point Trail to visit Minnewaska State Park Preserve.] At the junction of State Route 209, turn left (south) and continue to the intersection with State Route 55 at Lundy Road. Turn right (west) on 55 passing along the south shore of the Roundout Reservoir. Turn right (north) on 55A at the west end of the reservoir. Continue north on 55A to Sullivan County Route 153 to the hamlet of Sundown. Turn left (north) on Sullivan County Route 46 which changes to County Route 42 in Ulster County, continuing on 42 to the hamlet of West Shokan. At the junction of State Route 28A turn left (north) to the hamlet of Boiceville. At the junction of State Route 28, turn left (west) to the Catskill Interpretive Center. Length: 60 miles (not including Thruway) Scenic Vistas: State Route 44/55 west side of the Shawangunk Ridge—Enjoy the panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains on the north side of the highway as you descend into Rondout Valley. State Route 55A west end of the Rondout Reservoir just north of Route 55 junction—Pull into the Eagle Viewing parking lot to enjoy a spectacular view of the Roundout Reservoir and, if you’re lucky, a passing eagle. Attractions: Mohonk Preserve—5,000 acres preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge with numerous hiking and mountain biking trails. Minnewaska State Park Preserve—15,000 acres park with numerous hiking and mountain biking trails. Sundown Wild Forest—Camping, hiking, hunting and fishing opportunities on thousands of acres of Catskill Forest Preserve. Catskill Interpretive Center—Your gateway to the Catskills, featuring interactive displays and maps and information on recreation, nature and wildlife, arts and culture. Dining: Eateries from diners to cafes and farm markets.
