NASA Technology Impact on Automotive SectorFuel Economy

• High MPG methodology uses predictive driving techniques based on road grades

• NASA developed topology mapping software for low altitude mountainous terrain flights

• Utilized NASA mapping software with unique Lotus algorithms to directly or indirectly control vehicle speed to maximize MPG based on road conditions (patent applied for)

• Chevy Cruze Eco manual rated at 42 MPG hwy averaged 64 MPG for 9,500 miles

Presidential Memorandum – Accelerating Technology Transfer and Commercialization of Federal Research In Support of High-Growth Businesses

Presidential Direction

Sec. 4. Facilitate Commercialization through Local and Regional Partnerships. (a) Federal laboratories [should] collaborate with external partners to share the expertise of Federal laboratories with businesses and to participate in regional technology innovation clusters that are in place across the country. (b) Agencies [should] locate applied research and business support programs to further technology transfer and commercialization. (c) Federal laboratories and other research facilities [should] engage in public-private partnerships in those technical areas of importance to the agency's mission with external partners to strengthen the commercialization activities in their local region.

Our early efforts were aligned with the Presidential directive!

What can NASA do to help my company?

I don’t know what capabilities NASA has relevant to my needs?

I have heard it is too hard to work with NASA?

“NASA made a positive impact on my business through our interaction/collaboration.”

“We need to keep this interaction going in our region.”

Changing the Voice of The Customer

“NASA was easy to work with and added value.”

“We need to keep investment in NASA R&D. ”

Where we started Where we are

I didn’t know we had a NASA center in Cleveland.
