Finding Your CQ! We all have one – we just don’t recognize it! We all know about IQ and have a certain idea of where we might fit – or even have taken an IQ test and know exactly. Yet not many of us know about – or have even heard about - our CQ! What’s that? You are now asking.

It is our Creativity Quotient. Inside all of us there is a strong element of creativity – a desire to express ourselves in a different, perhaps more meaningful way. Remember when you were just a child – and you had more fun creatively making tunnels and buildings from the empty boxes the Christmas presents came in than you had playing with the new toys. And how many movies or plays have you seen that you wished you had acted in. What about singing along, playing an instrument – for instance the drums - or painting, making pottery. And all those poems and stories dwelling inside you have always wanted to be put down on paper

That’s not all that creativity is about though. How about parts of the world you have always wanted to visit? You have always wanted to go to China, visit the Artic before all the ice is gone, visit the Vatican or Machu Pichu, or even bicycle across Canada, at least part way. Take part in controversial conversations about politics, religion, or books you have read. There are many more unfulfilled creative wishes within us - we just don’t give them a chance to emerge.

What is stopping us? Often it is fear that we can’t paint or make pottery well enough, we can’t write well enough to tell our stories, or can’t afford to travel. Our fears are groundless – the only thing stopping us from being the creative people we can become is the wrong stories we keep in our minds – “people would make fun of me or what I do”, “the outcome of what I try will be awful”, “my family will think I have gone crazy”. “What if my attempt is a failure”? What is the answer to all these?

As you have heard many times – life is a journey – and so is creativity. It’s like running a marathon - it doesn’t matter if you win – it matters if you finish, or do better than last time. And that is what creativity is all about – it is in the doing – and as time goes by – yes, it does get better and better, more fun, more fulfilling.

If we don’t explore our creative desires, intuitions, and secret longings - we will not have lived life fully. And as we get older and don’t do creative things – life becomes more and more boring and often leads to depression and an early demise.

How do you get started? Sit quietly and just think about it – let your imagination run wild for a while. What is your heart and mind telling you? “I have always wanted to be in a play”. “I would really like to become a great nature photographer and do a docu-mentary of my grandchildren as they grow up”. “It would be fun to do pottery and make presents for all my family for Christmas”. The list might be endless – then you decide – which ones do I really want to do. A suggestion – limit it to three then do some research to see what is available, when, where and how much will it cost. Then go and talk to people – others taking the program and/or the teachers – then make the choice that feels just right FOR YOU!

So turn on the CQ within you – and enjoy the richly fulfilling, pleasurable and personal journey it will take you on.

OSA Director, Milton Orris, chairs the Okanagan School of the Arts’ Program Committee. Launching of the Creative For Life Program is a high priority to get rolling this year for OSA and Milton!

The following introductory courses are intended for seniors interested in creative programs. With a few classes in November 2014, we will provide samples of programs that everyone is invited to attend. Drop in and sign up for the following courses at 760 Main St or go to www.osarts.com. Creative For Life 2015 begins on January 14th with a Symposium and Open House.

Painting in the Visual Arts Open Studio - 1:30 pm to 4 pm, November 24Join Okanagan School of the Arts’ instruc-tors for these introductory painting sessions being held in the Visual Arts Studio. You will be introduced to a variety of different paints and supplies that will be supplied to you. Bring your curiousity, interest and willingness to try something new and bring clothes that you don’t mind getting perma-nent paint on because these paints do not come out.

Pottery Open Studio with Kathleen Mur-phy - 1:30 pm to 4 pm, November 18 & 25Kathleen Murphy, Instructor for the Oka-nagan School of the Arts, will help you get your hands dirty with clay in the Shatford Pottery Open Studio. These two classes will provide you with a small clay treasure and an idea of what the classes will be like in 2015.

Pioneers and Places with Randy Manuel- 1:30 - 4 pm, Thursdays, Nov 20Historian Randy Manuel will share stories about the evolution of Penticton through the last century, showcasing some of the personalities, incidents and ghost towns. Randy will answer questions, such as: Why is the river straight and how was it in the olden days? Where did the railway travel through Penticton and why did it stop?

Writing Recollections with Milton Orris - 1:30 pm to 4 pm, November 26thWe all have so many “life stories” inside our minds that are sometimes funny, some-times sad – yet always interesting. This program gets you started on writing your best, most important memories, many of the ones you want to preserve and share with family and friends. The time together begins with a brief lecture on writing, then a time for you to do some, and finally a chance to share your stories with others there. It is a fun and moving experience as you get to share your stories and have glimpses of the interesting lives of others.

Creative Living with Milton Orris - 1:30 - 4 pm, November 28thGetting Older Isn’t What It Used to Be; It’s A Whole Lot Better! However that is even more so if you think about it and plan for it – and that is what this program is about. We will explore together the ten major areas of planning your years from now on – social connections, where to live, on-going learn-ing, physical activity, working or volunteer-ing, creative activity, travel, family relation-ships, health and finances. Each topic will be interactive so you come away with some good ideas how to make the most of the years ahead.

CREATIVE FOR LIFE - 2015 (more to come)

Creative For Life Symposium & Open House - 1:30 pm, Wednesday, January 14th, 2015 Mark your calendars for this community event in the Shatford Centre Auditorium. We are inviting organizations and individu-als to bring information to share with ‘peo-ple who weren’t born yesterday’. We will have engaging speakers and presenters, displays and demonstrations to launch the 2015 Creative For Life Programs. Plan to attend and invite others!

We Love Documentary Movie ‘Cyber Seniors’ 1:30 pm on January 21st, 2015 Bob Nicholson, former CBC journalist, radio morning show host and TV news anchor will host this informative series under the guidance of Director Pepita Ferrari, who will be selecting movies on a regular basis. The first movie is ‘Cyber Seniors’ in recognition of the new Cyber Seniors program that the Okanagan School of the Arts is developing with the assistance of youth and the schools in our community. This is an historic event that you won’t want to miss.

Katia and Fiona are feltmakers deeply inspired by their natural environments and the impact that en-vironment has on us, personally and creatively. From this common inspiration they follow very differ-ent creative paths, using their own patterns, designs, colourings, and felting methods to communicate their individual narratives. Both artists use clothing and accessories as the canvas, creating wearable art pieces of the highest quality that are one of a kind, visually stimulating, embedded with meaning, and highly wearable. When they met at the MidWest Felting Symposium in 2014, it was a meeting of kindred spirits, and the idea of working together to create a unique and beautiful workshop expe-rience developed. They are honoured and delighted to bring this Felt in Fashion experience to the Shatford Centre in April 2015. The workshop program is designed so that students can take classes from both teachers, mixing and matching the classes that provide a broad range of skills and ideas, while creating highly complementary garments and accessories.

Katia Mokeyeva creates a unique line of art wearable under her label, Feuer Und Waster, in her studio in San Francisco, California. She is shortlisted this year for an American Craft Council Niche Award for excellence in quality and design. The wilderness is the main source of inspiration in Katia's designs, and the organic connection in humanity's sym-biosis with nature. Her latest ideas celebrate the vast variety of colors and textures of natural objects. www.feuer-und-wasser.com
