Dear Members and Friends:

Exciting plans are under way for our events this year. We

are adding the First Annual SMPA flea market, which, I

think will be a lot of fun. The idea belongs to Phyllis, so

naturally she is the flea market chair person. What a won-

derful idea. Give her a call 347-5696 to reserve your ta-

ble. A detailed flyer will be available at the March 16 meet-

ing. Tables are already going fast so get your reservation in

as soon as possible.

Lorin Flemming, Bill Woodward, Donna Davis, Chip Hess have all suffered with health

issues this month. We are praying for your wellness and hope for a speedy recovery.

Hopefully, will see you soon at the meetings.

I envy Jim and Emily Rankin. They have been on a month long trip with the camper,

out doing prospecting in Arizona. Just a couple of days ago they ran into a windstorm,

got sand blasted and lost their awning. Hopefully they will be at the meeting to tell us

about their interesting prospecting finds. And adventures.

Than you Mary Ann and Jim Stevens and volunteers for doing the Rv Show. Some

interesting things happened with Dakota Fred. Hopefully that will be shared at meeting.

Senator Ted Gain’s district representative, Dave Muerer agreed to be our guest speaker

in April, see page 7. Be sure to bring a refreshment and see you at the March 16 meet-

ing.

Meeting Minutes

Anderson Grange Hall 8085 Airport Way Redding, CA 96002

President Diana Clayton called the meeting to order at 7:13 pm. Brandon Weathers led the members in the flag salute. Diana called for new members and guests present to introduce themselves, and then Diana introduced the Board Members, Officers and Chairmen. Miner of the Month: Ramona Kallem Announcements: NorCal Boat, Sport & RV Show on March 3 -5. We will participate with a panning demonstration; volunteers are needed, contact Jim Stevens. California Water Resources Board Workshop: Shasta Miners & Prospectors were well represented at the Workshop tasked with developing a permitting process for the Water Resources Board. Thirty or more members were in attendance, many had the op-portunity to express their concerns and desires regarding permits. Education Program: Erin Marie Ryan from US Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s Office, spoke to our members and made suggestions on how to get our concerns acknowledged. Ms. Ryan suggested the following:

Show-up, numbers count, attend meetings even if one does not wish to speak. Fight for your rights, or you will surely loose them. Bring in new people to your organization. Share your knowledge to expand your influence. If you hear of a “Whistle Blower,” Ms. Ryan is always available to hear their story. Sometimes members within an organization don’t know how to get the

word out.

President Diana Clayton presented Ms. Ryan with a Certificate of Appreciation for talking to our group and for all her suggestions and encouragement. Hidden Coin: The Hidden Coin has still not been found, it is not underwater in spite of the high river flows, and a new clue will be provided in the next newsletter. Metal Detector Report—Bill Doyle: The January Outing was scheduled to take place at the Parsons School in Redding; however, upon arriving it was found to be locked behind a new fence. (This seems to be an increasing problem due to vandalism caused by the homeless.) The nine attending members went to the nearby Rother Elementary School and had a successful outing. Everyone found some change and Howard Waldron found a 1944 Wheat Head Penny and a presidential dollar coin. The February Outing will be held at 9:00a.m. on Saturday, February 25th at Shasta Elementary School, in Old Shasta. Northwest Treasure Hunters have sent out their entry forms for the June 3027 Hunt in Athol, Idaho. Interested parties should contact Bill or Susan Doyle for further infor-mation. There will be a Lapidary & Rock Sale in early March; many items of interest will be for sale, check the newsletter for further information, or contact Bill. Claims Report—Mike Abernathy: There will be no Hosted Claims Outing this month. Mike and Dan Collier will be unavailable. Wa-ter levels are high so if you plan on mining the claims take all necessary precautions. Find of the Month: Wayne King—found a pewter Mini Mouse charm at Rother Elementary School on the January Detector Outing. Wayne also found $2.01 in change and was the only submission this month. Minutes—Susan Doyle, Secretary: The minutes were accepted as presented in the newsletter with a unanimous voice vote. Treasurer’s Report :Treasurer Wayne King submitted his report, but it was not presented to the assembly. $5,718.99. A copy of Treasurer King’s report is included with these minutes. Membership Report—Mike Russell: Mike has officially taken over the membership roll. Thank you to Donna Davis for her years of work on membership. Logo Clothing—Mary Ann Stevens: Mary Ann still has items that were ordered and need to be picked up. New Business: Donation to MMAC - Phil Batton suggested that the Club make a donation to PLP for their legal fund. The Board will take the matter under consideration at the next Board Meeting and determine an appropriate donation. Flea Market: Phyllis Bogges suggested that the Club hold a Flea Market in the Grange as a fund raiser and wanted to know if the membership would be interested. The members in attendance seemed very receptive, so the particulars will be worked out at the next regular Board Meeting. Raffle: Raffle was conducted by Diana Clayton, Mike Abernathy and Velva Langstaat. 50/50 Drawing—was won by Bill Schumpert, in the amount of $55.00, Gold Nugget—was won by Bill Woodward. The meeting was adjourned at 9:18 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Susan J. Doyle, Secretary

February Metal Detecting Outing Report The outing at Shasta Elementary School had seven persons in attendance, including Ed Thurston, Chris Agresta, Dennis Paloma,

Howard Waldron, Tom Kibat, Fred Furry, and me.

The targets were spare; however, we all went home with small amounts of change and miscellaneous finds.

Tom Kibat took home a child’s ring and finds by other participants included gram sized measuring weights and a 1951 wheat head

penny.

One of the participants found a gold nugget in a glass bottle, only to find that the nugget was dropped by one of the other partici-

pants. The nugget was returned to the owner.

Overall, the weather was pleasant and the comradeship was outstanding.

Until next month, keep swinging, Bill

Hi there miners,

I know what most miners have on their minds, the Orville Dam Spillway and the exposed bedrock.

The sport show was wet and very cold. It poured on Sat. when I was there. Not much help though...had my

grand kids with me. Thank you all for helping Jim and Mary Ann Stevens.

I am a grandmother again...third grandchild. Her name is Daisy Jean. I hope to introduce you her at the next

outing. See you at the March 16 meeting.

Thank you Mary Ann and Jim and all the volunteers at the Nor Cal RV and Boat Show March 3-5 2017.

“ If We Keep Quiet, Nothing Will Change” SMPA had a good showing at the January 25th California Water Board Meeting about Suction Dredging. Erin Ryan, from Congressman Doug La Malfa’s office pre-sented a follow up to the membership at the February16 meeting. On February 17, SMPA Board Members met to create a comment letter due by February 28 to the California Water Board. The comment letter was a reflection of the comments made by members at the February 16 SMPA meeting. We want to thank every-one for their thoughts and comments as it made this letter happen. The next step is a wait and see. The Water Board has to study all the comments and make a deci-sion about dredging. We estimate this will

take about a year.
