A few words from our President, Cindy Russell

SMPA Officers and Board Members If you need information about the Asso-ciation’s activities please contact us.

Our hearts go out to members who are still evacuated from their homes as I write this. We will do what we can to help. I know of member,s family members who lost their homes and all their belongings. This fire season just began and it’s a tough one. After canceling the campout, and the outing on Cyrus Herrera’s claim the Board is all looking forward to the SMPA Picnic. We hope to reschedule the outing to Cyrus’s to later in the summer or early fall. Picnic information is included in the newsletter. We have the coins to bury, a Gold Nugget to give away for 1st Prize, $25.00 for 2nd, and $15.00 for 3rd, plus Dessert Bingo, Cornhole Contest and hamburgers and hotdogs to eat. Jim and Mar-yAnn Steven’s daughter and son in law, Kim and Matt, have offered to BBQ for us even after losing everything they owned in the CARR FIRE. SMPA is providing ham-burgers, hotdogs and all the fixins. Bill Woodward donated the plates, bowls, cups and utensils. Thank you Bill. Very important meeting happened in Sacramento and Jim and Emily Rankin were there. Please read Jim’s note and read the full notes on our website www.shastaminersandprospectors.org Cindy

Today Myself and a group of mining interested parties met with the water control board senior staff in the California EPA building regarding suction dredging permit-ting. The meeting ran over 2 hours. There were 2 representatives from the new 49ers, 3 from AMRA one from Senator Stones office and 3 from the Shasta Miners / French Gulch mining district and 1 from the Western Mining Alliance. The meeting can best be described as positive and informative. The senior staff seems to be trying to come up with a permitting method that can be achieved by the mining community. However they are bound by a tremendous amount of state and federal rules and regulations that must be satisfied as a part of the permit. The senior staff readily admits that they do not understand the dredging process well and are interested to learn more. They also hope to have a joint permit with the fish and wildlife department so they do not pro-cess permit applications that are later rejected by DFW. All indications are that they will go forward with an application process to submit to their board of directors this spring for their review and possible approval. It will by necessity be cumbersome and difficult due to all of the requirements. They mentioned that to could run to 200 pages. There will be water quality monitoring required as a condition of the permit. Emily Rankin was able to attend as my guest and took extensive notes. Once she types them up I will have more information to share
