Sharp & Philips TV: Memory Problems, Power Problems, Display Problems

Documented Service Records - All Level Technicians

For Intermediates, Professional Technicians And Advanced Students

Documented Service Records – All Level Technicians.

Power Faults - Display Faults - Memory Errors

The following information in this Sharp & Philips case history e-book waswritten and compiled according to Damon Morrow's in-house servicerecords (or case history) of Sharp & Philips TV failures. This e-bookdocuments a fair range of Sharp & Philips TV faults including variousmemory errors, display symptoms, and power failures. This case history e-book is very easy to use, and it simply lists a fair range of popular problemsand secretive fixes for Sharp & Philips TV's. The information contained inthese pages are complete with the model number of the Sharp & PhilipsTV, the board-number of the faulty circuit, and the part-locationnumber of the defective component(s).

This e-book is a simple and affective reference tool, revealing components which have failed causing performance issues with Sharp & Philips TV's. This e-book documents known symptoms on Sharp & Philips TV's such as Stand-by power only, dead-no power, no start-up cycle, error image on-screen, lines on screen, no audio, and much more.

The components and IC's which have failed are listed in this e-book, and they are mainly standard components and IC chips. Standard component failure include diodes, resistors, MOSFET's, IGBT’s, NPN's, and capacitors.

IC chip failure include memory IC's, control IC’s, buffer IC’s, IPM Module, FET chips, buck regulators, LDO’s, level shifters, etc. The test equipment used while compiling this Sharp & Philips case history information was a standard DVM meter (Fluke), Capacitor meter (uF/ESR) and a 60Mhz digital Oscilloscope (the very basics all technicians use). The scope was primarily used to troubleshoot IC chips and their I/O signaling, especially onPhilips plasma sustain boards. The scope was also used to test feedback-loops, start-pulses, and duty-cycles on Sharp LCD/LED boards, as well as serial-clocks, gate-circuits, and bucking control. However, in this e-book all of the troubleshooting has been done for you, with the causes and bad parts listed.

This Sharp & Philips e-book is for technicians of all levels, there are no complex diagrams or detailed graphics involved. This e-book is not a case history of troubleshooting and circuit evaluation (as with my Plasma DisplayFaults & LCD Secrets books). This e-book is a simple case history of Sharp & Philips TV parts failure. Again, all of the troubleshooting work has been done for you and compiled in a simple and easy to follow format. This e-book is written text information correlating to shop records. There are no pictorial graphics or illustrative diagrams used in this e-book as it is not required i.e. 'case-history'.

Note: Below is an example of how the Service-Case-History Records of each Sharp & Philips TV model are laid out in this e-book, and also shows the meaning of each category.

Quick Tips On Sharp & Philips ComponentsQuick Emphasis on Component Faults & Error's

The five figures below point out the main components that are known to fail on main boards, T-Con boards, SMPS boards, and X/Y sustain boards from Sharp & Philips TV’s. FIG 1-2-3 illustrates the bucking IC’s and LDO’s that causes multiple shut down issues on T-Con’s (logic board) and main boards. FIG 4 reveals SMPS parts failures as well.

Page 10: Sharp LED/LCD Philips Plasma/LCD TV Case History Volume 1

FIG1-2-3 Buck converters, Step Down Switchers, and LDO’s that fail on T-Con board’s will cause the TV to fully power-up with a brief raster then only the backlights are on, and then the TV shuts down into protect mode (indicating a fault error) and faulty SMD FET’s cause the same symptom. The same three components in FIG 1-2-3 that fail on T-Cons also fail on main boards (including faulty SMD FET’s) and will cause the TV to fully power-up with welcome-screen, then approximately after 20 seconds the TV shuts down into brief stand-by mode, the protect mode (indicating a fault error). The fault symptom of the TV is governed by the design topology of themain board and T-Con board.

FIG 4 points out the component parts that fail on SMPS boards, faulty box capacitors, opto-couplers and electrolytic caps will cause the TV to attempt power-up then switch into protect mode, a shorted diode on the cold side of the SMPS will cause the same fault symptom. Resistors, mode control IC’s and power-resistors that fail (hot-side SMPS) will cause the TV to switch from stand-by mode into immediate protect mode (indicating a crucial component has a fault). MOSFET’s, IGBT’s, and power rectifiers that become shorted will blow the primary fuse on the SMPS and cause the TV to be completely unresponsive with no stand-by power (dead).

Novacom Service

Page 11: Sharp LED/LCD Philips Plasma/LCD TV Case History Volume 1

FIG 5A illustrates the known components that cause X/Y sustain error’s on Philips plasma TV’s. TO-220 and TO-252 FETs that develop a short will usually blow the ceramic fuse on either X/Y board, causing shut down or black screen. Electrolytic caps that have high ESR will cause the X/Y board to shut down sometimes resulting in sound with no picture (y-board). IPM modules that develop an internal short will usually open a Pico fuse or ceramic fuse on X/Y boards causing board shut down. IPMs that develop a problem with SUS/UP-SUS/DOWN will cause the TV to have sound with no picture.

This concludes Quick Tips

Documented Service Records – All Level Technicians.Power Faults - Display Faults - Memory Errors

The following information in this LG case history e-book was written andcompiled according to Damon Morrow's in-house service records (or casehistory) of LG LED & LCD TV failures. This e-book documents a goodrange of LG LED & LCD TV faults including various memory error's,display symptoms, and power failures. This LG case history e-book is veryeasy to use, and it simply lists a fair range of popular problems and secretivefixes for LG LED & LCD TV's. The information contained in these pagesare complete with the model number of the LG LED & LCD TV, theboard-number of the faulty circuit, and the part-location number of thedefective component(s).

This LG e-book is a simple and affective reference tool, exposing components which have failed, resulting in performance issues with LG LED & LCD TV's. This e-book documents known symptoms on LG LED &LCD TV's such as stand-by power only, dead-no power, no start-up cycle, noaudio, and much more. The components and IC's which have failed are listedin this e-book, and they are mainly standard parts and IC's. Standard parts such as diodes, resistors, mosfet's, 6-pin NPN's, capacitors, and IC's such as memory IC's, control IC's, and bucking IC's. The test equipment used while compiling this LG case history information was a standard DVM meter (Fluke), Capacitor meter (uF/ESR) and a 60Mhz digital Oscilloscope (the basics all technicians use).

The scope was primarily used to troubleshoot IC chips and observe their wave shaping performance, feedback-loops, start-pulses, duty-cycles, serial-clock, and gate-circuits. However, in this e-book all of the troubleshooting has been done for you, with the causes and bad parts listed.

This LG e-book is for technicians of all levels, there are no complex diagrams or detailed graphics involved. This e-book is not a case history of troubleshooting and circuit evaluation (as with my other books). This e-bookis a simple case history of LG LED & LCD TV parts failure. Again, all of the troubleshooting work has been done for you and compiled in a simple and easy to follow format. This e-book is written text information correlating to shop records. There are no pictorial graphics or illustrative diagrams used in this e-book as it is not required i.e. 'case-history'.

The following are some basic components that fail on LG LED & LCD TV's

Quick Tips On LG LED Driver Board ComponentsQuick Emphasis on LG LED Driver Component Faults & Error's

LED driver boards are the boards that supply the LED-array which provide an efficient back light source for the LCD panel. A lesser known fact in the TV repair business is how often LED driver IC chips fail along with their connected switching FET's. LED back light source are a new and popular design by engineers because LED's are a low-voltage light source, which only require a constant DC-voltage or current to function at peak performance. TV engineers also choose LED back lighting because LED's can be configured to various power-supply options when developing a particular design topology (current mode driver IC chip, or voltage mode driver IC chip). This increases the safety factor and especially longer stand-by power.

While LED's are operating, all of the stringed LED's in the strip must be protected from fluctuations in the line-voltage rail. This is because the changes in voltage will result in a disproportionate change in source current (sink), and this will affect changes in the light-output of the LED's. This is because the LED output is directly proportional to its input current and is thereason why LED's have a rated current range. Some lower-end LED TV manufacturers design their LED driver boards to produce a higher voltage/current output then what the LED's are rated for (especially at PWM peak). Some LED TV manufacturers do this because the LED's will be brighter at maximum PWM levels, but the bad side to doing this is the LED's will now degrade much faster due to the higher temperatures internally, which shortens the life of the LED's and especially the LED driver chip where its boost-converter becomes very warm and most driver-chips are installed on the LED board with no heat sink, this is especially bad for larger sized LCD screens (55-75in).

In a general sense LED driver chips are very important in trying to preserve the life of the LED's and yet LED driver chips have a multitude of other functions. But the two most important driver functions are dimming and color changing. Dimming is done by using a reduction in the forward current, this action happens by pulse width modulation (PWM). Because by using PWM the frequency range is huge, from just a hundred modulations

69

Novacom Service

Page 70: Sharp LED/LCD Philips Plasma/LCD TV Case History Volume 1

per second to hundreds of thousands of modulations per second in which theLED's appear to have have a continuous light output with no flicker visible to the naked eye.

LED driver chips fail due to an extreme overload of LED's to drive and modulate, especially on large sized LCD screens which require a large array of LED's on a back-panel strip. LED driver chips also fail from rookie designers using the wrong voltage rating of the driver chip against what the LED's are rated for. Using the wrong voltage rating of a driver chip to operate LED's of a higher or lower voltage requirement will cause higher thermal conditions of the driver IC. For example using a 15V driver IC on a 10V LED load will significantly shorten the life of the driver IC. Balancing thermal conditions with LED driver boards are a tough task for LED TV manufacturers, and lower-end LED TV models don't achieve this balance. An example of balancing these thermal conditions are in Fig 1AB.

70

Novacom Service

Page 71: Sharp LED/LCD Philips Plasma/LCD TV Case History Volume 1

In Fig 1AB the LED's at Ch.1 contain a forward voltage equal to 3.5V and the LED's at Ch.2 have a forward voltage equal to 3.2V. This means if the highest voltage threshold is achieved, each LED current sink will have an adequate amount of space to produce the proper level of current to set the light output properly.

In Fig 1AB, if the LED voltage (V-LED) is regulated too low, the highest voltage LED string will fall out of regulation and hit the dropout point whichdeclines the output current. Dropout voltage is the voltage level achieved when the current sinks in the back-light controller begin to drift out of current regulation. On the contrary, if the LED voltage is regulated too high, each LED string will have an abundance of regulated voltage and proper current output, but unwanted power will dissipate across the current sink andcause unnecessarily high thermal conditions resulting in extra power and heat dissipation. In Fig 1AB the LED's need 71mA to properly provide back-lighting too the LCD panel, but the LED's on Ch.1 have a higher forward voltage than Ch.2 needing 35V to get to 71mA.

With this kind of system where the voltage supply (Vin) is lower than the V-LED, a step-up boost converter is used to produce power to the LED strings. The output voltage of the boost converter drives all the LED strings in the strip. When programmable driver chips fail it is usually at the SCL pin (serial-clock), or OE (output Enable) logic pin for the node of each LED string (MUX).

LED driver chips that are I2C based, means they have an EEPROM functionthat stagnates at the serial-clock pin causing improper operation of the driverchip. Sometimes a quick trick that will reset the I2C driver chip are as follows:

1 Turn TV off, then run a jumper wire between Vdd and the SDA pin2 Turn the TV on (10 seconds) back lights may flicker a few times3 Now disconnect jumper wire starting at the SDA pin then turn TV off4 Disconnect other end of jumper wire from Vdd pin5 Turn the TV on, the LED driver board should operate normally.

You can access further settings by entering the TV-service mode key commands and alter other various settings of the LED back light.

Quick Tips On LG T-Con Board ComponentsQuick Emphasis on LG T-Con Board Component Faults & Error's

The following are other failures on the T-Con board

6-pin transistors on LG T-cons (and other manufacturers) are becoming moreand more popular. Some of these devices have resistors internally, and these 6-pin transistors are known for not producing an output voltage. The other components on the T-con which fail often are standard parts such as FET's, SMD FET's and most of all the Power-Supply chip for VCOM and the panelvoltage. You can see the pin failures at Fig 5AB. When a switching problem occurs the scope will reveal how weak the signal is or there won't be a switching signal at all, and the chip tends to get very warm.
