Ministry News

Staff Parish Note:The Staff Parrish Relations Committee has decided that the development of the Youth Ministry atTrinity will be moved to the front burner. This is being done primarily for programming reasons.Consequently, instead of a full-time Associate Pastor with a broad array of responsibilities, a full-timeYouth Minister will be sought.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee has decided to move up the timeline for the search so as tohave the position filled as early as June 1. In the interim we are moving to an all-volunteer youthministry. This volunteer youth ministry will consist of parents and others who will share the planningfor the Sunday evening programming and Sunday school teaching.

To that end, a meeting for parents of middle and high school youth was held February 19. At thismeeting the immediate and longer term plans of the Youth Program were discussed. Ann willcontinue to conduct Sunday school sessions and evening youth meetings through the end ofFebruary.

Starting March 5, 2017, the every Sunday evening youth meetings will be replaced with monthlyspecial events. A calendar of future youth events will be coming out. Look for news of these eventsin the Daybreak newsletter and Sunday bulletins. This will enable parents and other volunteers toknow about opportunities to participate and especially ways to volunteer.

Finally, we certainly thank Ann for her service to Trinity’s youth. We look forward to a bright futurefor the program. ~ Guy Wall – SPRC Chair

Trinity United Methodist YouthSunday School (Grades 6-12) 10:15 am, #38 “The Tank”

The Littlest Angels Choir is a choir offered at Trinity UMC for all children aged 4 years through 4th grade. We meet immediately following Worship With The Children in the 9:00 service. The children meet the leaders in the Narthex and are escorted to the Library where they sing, discuss the meanings

and stories of their songs and develop an appreciation for rhythm, movement, melody, and music worship. About once a month the choir sings for the 9:00 service and are a true blessing to the congregation. Occasionally kazoos and bells are added to the program.

All children are invited to join the choir, no previous musical experience is required, just a chance to have fun and enjoy singing and playing good music. Oh yes, at the end of each session the children can also enjoy a small snack. The Littlest Angels Choir meets from the first Sunday after Labor Day through Mother's Day in May.

If you have questions about the choir, you may contact Juanita Schmitt at 812-949-0916 or Carol Cook at 812-399-2510.

“Christ in the Passover” with

Doug Carmel of Rock of Israel Ministries

7:00 pm in Murr Hall

Doug Carmel of Rock of Israel Ministries will

lead us through the elements of the Jewish

Passover Seder. The evening will begin at 7:00

pm as we sit around tables in Murr Hall. Each table

will be arranged with representative elements of

the ceremonial Passover foods (we will not be

having a full meal). The table will be set as if in a

Jewish home where the Passover is annually

celebrated.

Doug Carmel will lead us through the “Haggadah”. The word haggadah means to

tell, or to relate. The Haggadah is the story of the birth of the Jews as a people. It deals

primarily with the events in Egypt which led from slavery to liberation, though it also spans

the entire period from Abraham to the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

More than just a historical document, it also speaks of the ideals and values which

constitute the essence of the national consciousness and identity of the Jewish people.

You will come to understand more fully the Jewish Passover with this hands-on

experience.

The highlight for us will be Doug explaining how we as Christians can see Christ in

every element of the Passover. Jesus was celebrating the Passover with his disciples the

night before he was crucified. He gave his disciples the elements from the Passover to

institute the Lord’s Supper that we celebrate throughout the Christian Church today.

We will learn a little Hebrew, sing and laugh as this fun and interactive child friendly

celebration continues for about 1 ½ hours. The closing of the celebration will be an

opportunity as you depart to receive the traditional imposition of ashes as we begin Lent.

Begin Lent 2017 with us on March 1 in Murr Hall at 7 pm. ~ Rev. Bill Shannon

Discerning the Voice of God:

New Bible Study Beginning April 5th

Have you ever wondered if God was speaking to you? Then you might wonder: if it wasn’t God, who was it? Discerning the voice of God is the next Bible study that the UMW is sponsoring. The study book is authored by Pricilla Shirer.

“Have you spent most of your Christian life leaning on these beliefs without really experiencing them? Have you been in the presence of passionate believers who shared stirring encounters with God’s voice while your own soul overflowed with confusion? How did these saints know God was speaking?”

Plan to come to this six-week study beginning Wednesday, April 5 at 10 a.m. (Yes, we will be out in time for TAM.) Each session will be about two hours long and, yes, there will be some homework each week.

The cost of the study books is $14. Call Dora Largent at 812-913-1681 before March 31.

See you April 5!

What Is Lent?Christians in the early 300s, if not before, began observing a period of fasting leading up to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection which was (and still is in most of the world) known as quadragesima (Latin for “forty days” or “fortieth day”.) In the English-speaking world we call this season Lent. It is a time of more intense spiritual seeking, devotion, and preparation climaxing in Holy Week with the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The Bible is filled with forty-day spiritual journeys in which people of faith have sought to hear from God. Elijah spent forty days fasting and seeking God at Mount Horeb. Moses fasted for forty days and forty nights at Mount Sinai when he received the Law. Noah watched the rain fall for forty nights as he sat in the ark pondering God’s words to him. Jonah preached repentance to the people of Nineveh for forty days. And most important of all, Jesus, before beginning his ministry, spent forty days and forty nights fasting in the wilderness while being tested by the devil. An entire season of our Christian liturgical year is devoted to the idea of repentance for our acts of betrayal and desertion where we contemplate and confess that we have not loved God with our whole heart and our brothers and sisters as we should. Lent, in the early church, was a time when those who had publicly denied Christ in order to avoid persecution repented and were restored, were brought back into fellowship and allowed to receive Holy Communion again. We remember and take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus forgave Peter for denying him, the others for deserting him and loved them still.

We are reading STILL LIFE WITH BREAD CRUMBS for our March selection. It is a very readable fictionstory of Rebecca Winter, a 60-year-old photographer. The exquisite photographs of her earlier yearshad brought her a lot of attention, but now life has changed. She is not the star that she once was, herexpenses have skyrocketed due to caring for her aged parents. Her mother's nursing home fees arechallenging, and she is helping her father with his rent. Besides that, Rebecca's husband has lefther. She has to get control. So, she moves from her apartment in Manhattan and rents a little cottageupstate in the woods, sight unseen. She is totally unprepared for rural life-----like the raccoon that livesin her attic. But she does get to ramble around in the woods with a runway dog, her sharp eyes, andher camera. She finds something mysterious that seems to have been purposely planted there. This isa love story that you will enjoy.

Come meet with us on the last Tuesday of March as we discuss Rebecca's life. Love to have you.
