Friends,

This month promises many opportunities to be thankful and show gratitude. Many of us will be spending time with our kids, our grandkids, and others we love. Let’s take time to reach out to our friends who will be spending the holiday alone, invite them to join you, or set a time when you can do something enjoyable together.

We have many things scheduled this month for fun & fellowship. Tickets for our December 10th fundraiser, the Lake Ridge Ladies Christmas Home Tour, go on sale for $20 this month. You will be able to purchase them at Lake Ridge Chapel & Memorial Designers. We challenge each of you to purchase just one ticket to support our organization. If you are not able to go, your purchase of a ticket will be donated to ladies who would not be able to go otherwise. Invite your friends, and pass the word around. We are hoping for the largest turnout ever!

I pray that your Thanksgiving is blessed with joy and togetherness with all those you hold dear. Much love to you, my special friends!

Flu Shot for Seniors: What You Should Know This SeasonInfluenza, or the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by one of the influenza viruses. The flu ranges from being mild to severe and can cause severe complications for children, seniors, and people with other health conditions.Currently, the best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. There are flu vaccinations for individuals 6 months of age and up, but there are special flu vaccinations for seniors to provide additional protection. The flu vaccination for seniors is a specially tailored shot designed to meet the unique medical needs of seniors. These shots have a higher dose than traditional flu vaccines. This is important because seniors often have suppressed immune systems. Also, seniors are susceptible to complications, such as pneumonia. These complications could lead to long and expensive hospitalizations – and a host of other problems, and they can even be fatal. Why Should Seniors Get the Flu Shot?Seniors should get the flu shot for the following reasons:• The flu can be particularly troublesome and dangerous for seniors.• These enhanced flu shots dramatically reduce the risk of contracting the flu. Studies have indicated

different percentage declines when taking flu vaccinations for seniors.• These specialized flu shots mean that if you do get the flu, your symptoms will likely be milder, but there

is still no guarantee.• The risks of the flu are large compared to the side effects from the vaccine, which are typically extremely

mild. Source: WebMD

Rhonda HaysRicky Napper and I came to know each other in the summer of 2008. I lived in Stillwater, OK, and he lived in Lubbock. At the time, he was working in Tulsa, OK, as a catastrophic storm adjuster. We met online so he asked me out on a date and said he would come over. I was a little hesitant but decided I’d give it a try.

Rick was a very quiet person. Therefore, our first date seemed to last forever. I was pretty exhausted at the end of the evening because I had tried to carry on a two-way conversation that seemed to consist of only myself. I had reached the point of just wanting him to leave and head back to Tulsa. When our evening at last came

to an end, I was so excited, and I walked him to the door. Just as I was shutting the door, he asked if he could see me again. This caught me totally off guard! I didn’t know what to say so I said yes.

To this day, I am so thankful I said yes. All the days after that day were some of the happiest and best days of my life. We married in Stillwater on July 13, 2009, and moved to Oklahoma City where we lived for 6 years. In July 2015, we moved to Lubbock. His job as an adjuster took him all over the US. The first year we were married, I continued to teach so I might not see him for a couple of months. That only lasted one year. I retired so I could travel with him or at least fly out to where he may be working.

We had a wonderful life together, and I always felt like I was on a honeymoon, always seeing new places and experiencing new adventures and making new memories. What more could a girl want! Not seeing him for a few weeks and then flying out to be with him and seeing him waiting on me when I got off the plane would always make my heart skip a few beats. Every time this happened, I wondered how I could love him more, but it seems I always could. It seemed like we could read each other’s minds and even finish each other’s sentences. Every day I just became more in love with Rick.

I had no idea my time with Rick would be limited to only 9 years. I had planned on so much more time. On June 1, 2008, I received one of those phone calls no one ever wants to receive. Rick had fallen off a ladder while inspecting a roof in Akron, OH. I flew out immediately. This was one reunion that was definitely not a happy one. Rick was paralyzed from the neck down. After almost two months in hospitals in OH and CO, Rick lost his fight and passed away on July 20, 2018. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about him, and I miss him so much, but what peace I do have is knowing that he is in a better place and is no longer in pain.
