From the Senior Warden:
And so a new year starts. At the first vestry meeting of the year (which had to be re-scheduled for February 3
because of the weather on January 20), the vestry will be working on planning the year of activities for the church,
including the church’s work in the community. We will schedule a potluck lunch meeting on March 3 to let everyone
know about these activities. The vestry would like to hear from you if you want to participate in church events and
outreach, and if you have your own ideas. You can talk to a vestry member, or put your ideas in the suggestion box
in the Parish Hall.
We are also working on church finances and the budget. I hope to seek out a regular supply priest for this year –
more on that at our next potluck. I want to thank all of you who have put in your pledge cards. This year’s pledges
total $56,000, which is about $5,000 less than last year. Trying to pay for everything with the pledged amount plus
the projected unpledged offerings will be tough. We may have to change a few things, but I am sure we will manage
to get by. If you have not yet done so, it is not too late to submit a pledge card.
The Inquirers Class started in mid-January. It is good to see so many attending this great class that Mother Linda
is leading.
Canon Jason will celebrate Holy Eucharist with us on the 17th, so mark your calendars and plan to attend the service
at 10:30. There will be no 8:00 service that day.
Let’s reach out to the community – to our neighbors and friends. Let them know Christ Church is here, and what we
are about.
I look forward to a great year, and pray that you all have a great year too. Please don’t hesitate to talk to me or
anyone on the vestry about your concerns and thoughts about Christ Church.
God Bless,
Gary Steffen, Senior Warden

February is Black History Month and for the second year
Christ Church will be paying tribute musically. We will
concentrate on the spirituals such as "Somebody's Knocking
on Your Door." We'll continue to sing some of the marvelous
songs we learned last year.
On the 3rd, our intrepid
Sing Sunday group will
sing "Go Down, Moses"
and "Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot." Remember, Sing
Sunday is for people who
like to sing and is not
connected to any church
choir commitment.
We all enjoy the fellowship and food at our weekly Coffee Hours
and appreciate both the regular and occasional
hosts, as well as everyone who contributes to
the at least once-monthly potlucks. Given
that, let us keep a few things in mind.
Leftovers. If you bring food to share, please
make arrangements for any leftovers: take
them home, get someone else to take them home, ask if Thursday
Bible Study wants them, dispose of them, or at least let someone
know what to do with them. Anything the 8:00 people leave for the
10:30 folks usually gets eaten, but there is sometimes a problem
with leftovers at the late Coffee Hour.
Pastry or things that can be easily frozen to be used at a later date,
like when no one has volunteered to host, should be wrapped well
and made airtight, and put in the freezer. But if you bring a dish
that cannot be frozen for later, we ask that you not just leave it on
the table or even in the refrigerator for someone else to decide what
to do with it (as someone left a pan of baked beans in the fridge
after the last potluck lunch, where it remained for weeks).
Cleaning up. Not everyone is able to volunteer to host Coffee
Hour, and that is fine. But since hosts are responsible for cleaning
up the kitchen, the regular hosts and a few other women often do
the majority of it, even at potlucks when no
one is “assigned” the job.
Clean up help would be much appreciated!
Offer to give the host a hand – ask her what
you can do. Scrape uneaten food off your
own plates into the trash, empty your coffee
cups in the sink. If the kitchen isn’t
crowded with people, put your own plates and cups in the
dishwasher when you’re finished with them. Hand wash some
dishes when the dishwasher is full. Wipe up spills. Everyone who
stays for Coffee Hour benefits from it; we all – women, men, and
kids – can pitch in to clean up. Thank you!
Saturday Café is now Second Saturday Café and Book Club.
This month it will meet on February 9, 9:00-11:00 a.m., for a
discussion led by Donna Fountain on Stephen King’s The Stand. This is arguably King’s most popular novel, centered
on a classic battle of good vs. evil.
For the second month in a
row, Donna generously
purchased several copies of
the book. There is still one left
for anyone who is interested in
joining us.
Saturday Café will continue the ongoing ministry of
assembling Care Bags for the homeless, so donations of
toiletries etc. are appreciated. Lists of appropriate items are in
the Parish Hall on the bulletin board and on the table where
you may leave your donated items.
By Jeanne Kagey
A conversation with Gary Steffen reveals a Kentucky native raised in
San Gabriel, California taking a long road to return home.
Gary's parents met in a rather unusual manner. His mother was
brought to an orphanage in Bethany, Kentucky (east of Lexington)
when hardship forced his grandmother to give her up at the age of 7.
His dad met the same fate at the age of 13 coming from nearby Ohio.
These two young folks married and made a life for themselves blessed
with three children. As time passed, wanderlust led them to try their
fortune in California. After a number of years both parents died,
leaving Gary with no parents at a young age. His now grown sister
stepped in and adopted Gary.
Gary yearned for an education in engineering with the goal of
building his own car. He went to both Cal State and UCLA. After two
years of working 2 or 3 jobs to pay for this fine education, he
discovered the Army would pay for its completion
and hire him as well! An “aha!” moment!
Gary was assigned to velocity weapon systems and
worked for the U.S. Army for 22 years before
retirement. He worked for the 19th Engineers, the Air
Defense, and the 502 Maintenance Battalion. He
reports they blew up a lot of bridges.
Gary spent 6 months on assignment for Desert Storm and too many
years in Korea – not his favorite assignment. Beginning in 1972 he
was back and forth to Korea multiple times. His last duty assignment
brought him to Fort Knox in 1993 and retirement thereafter. He
reconnected with a California grade school classmate and in 2006 Rita
joined him here, married him, and they are permanent residents.
Well, that brings us to Christ Episcopal Church now where Gary
serves for one more year as Senior Warden. His goal is to get us a
priest to fill our pulpit and we wish him well in retirement and in
achieving his goal for the church.
The Parish Life Committee continues with following services: visits
shut-ins and hospitalized members; welcomes newcomers and
visitors; sends cards for significant events; provides hospitality at
our church and elsewhere; and uses the phone tree to inform
parishioners about unique situations, such as cancellation of
Sunday services due to inclement weather.
Seven local churches have opened their doors to the homeless from
December 1 to February 28. We have helped our covenant church
(St. James Catholic) with refreshments on some of the Wednesday
evenings/nights. The following parishioners have been very
generous to support this cause: Rita Jenkins, Lorena Simpson, Linda
Hughes, Sandi Hetzel, Connie Goodman, Tuula and Allan Poikonen.
A big thank you also goes to Donna Fountain and Beverly Bow for
assembling “care packages” for Warm Blessings Soup Kitchen.
Janet Vick is now the new point of contact for plastic bottle caps as
she delivers them to a new location. Thank you, Jan.
