We are welcoming 2016 with trepidation and hope—trepidation because the world economy is slowing down further and terrorist attacks continue unabated; and hope because India is poised to be the world’s fastest growing emerging economy and in views of the spirited fight we are putting up to combat terrorism. Nevertheless, it is going to be a challenging year for us, both as a nation and a company. With private investment showing no upturn, we have to put in every effort to keep the order book full.

Great organisations overcome hard times by reinventing themselves to face the challenges. And accordingly, in these taxing days, our company is laying greater stress on innovation and development. In this issue, we have updated you on some of our major training initiatives—ALDEP, LeAP, Shikhar and Udaan—which cover the entire hierarchy. We also unveiled two new initiatives in the key areas of ‘safety’ and ‘quality’. To implement and promote better safety practices, our regional heads will visit other regions to audit safety measures and their findings will be used to motivate the staff to pay more attention to safety in their respective sites and jobs. As regards ‘quality’, our ‘Quality’ department has initiated a special ‘Champions Scheme’, where senior engineers will be selected through a tough and rigorous process to be ‘champions’ in selected finishing activities in their regions. This initiative, it is felt, will go a long way in enhancing the quality of work at our projects.

Speaking about quality, our ‘Quality’ wing has celebrated ‘World Quality Day’ for the first time across the country. The intiative is bound to increase awareness about quality down the hierarchy.

Celebrations of another kind were held at the SP head office in Mumbai, where long serving stalwarts and champion trainers/mentors/auditors and projects and regions were honoured as part of the Annual Day celebrations. There was also much rejoicing over our SAP section’s indefatigable efforts and perseverance that led to Project Bahaar winning the SAP ACE 2015 award. Our hearty congratulations to the team! Our congratulations also go out to the project team at Kishanganj, Bihar, where Mr. Nitish Kumar recently inaugurated the Dr. Kalam Agricultural College campus.

Dr. Kalam Agriculture College, Kishanganj—yet another landmark project of SP E&C in the state of Bihar—is slated to be one of the biggest agricultural colleges in India. A research and development facility on agriculture and farming, the state-of the-art institution is being developed as a greenfield project on the bank of Mahananda River in north-eastern Bihar. Kishanganj district being rich in agriculture, the college is intended be a nationally acclaimed agricultural institution, with a capacity to teach over 500 graduate and post-graduate students. With this, Bihar—which has an ancient educational legacy,

boasting of the world renowned fifth century Nalanda University—will soon have an added feather on its cap: the Dr. Kalam Agricultural College, Kishanganj.

Keeping in mind the tough climate of the location, it indeed was a very challenging assignment for the project team.

The college was recently inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar, on August 10, 2015, which saw attendance from senior ministers of the state of Bihar and notable educationalists.

The sixth edition of the national safety conference, 6th NASCON, was held at the SP

head office in Mumbai, on July 22, 2015. The conference was chaired by Mr. S.C. Dixit and was attended by all directors, regional heads and regional HSE coordinators. Apart from other issues, ways and means to further improve the organisation’s HSE performance were deliberated on at the conference.

The theme this year was ‘Involve to Improve’, and as a path breaking initiative, the idea of an inter-regional HSE tour was mooted by our executive director, Mr. S. C. Dixit. It was decided that regional heads would tour other regions, visiting a maximum of four sites and a minimum of two sites every quarter. They would review HSE standards and suggest solutions for problems during these visits. This, it was felt, would bring uniformity in HSE standards across the organisation. Sites would be selected from the perspective of maximum manpower and high risk probability and initially, one representative from the corporate HSE department would accompany each regional head.

Accordingly, travel plans were worked out in coordination with the regional heads for the HSE tours. Though sparing 2-3 days from their busy schedules exclusively for HSE and arranging for other logistics seemed a challenge to the regional heads, it was easily overcome given their enthusiasm and support. The information about the visits was withheld for as long as possible so as to get a realistic picture of the site. The first round of the tours took place in the third quarter, with a total of 16 sites being covered in various regions—except Gujarat, where the visit had to be

cancelled at the last moment due to the Patidar agitation—in the months of August and September 2015. The whole exercise was a success beyond expectations, due to the concept being novel, the unconditional and whole-hearted support of all the regional heads and, above all, because of keen involvement of the project patron, our executive director, Mr. S. C. Dixit.

Corporate HSE is thankful to the executive director and all the regional heads for their time and valuable guidance in the first phase of this inter-regional HSE tour. We are also thankful to the staff of the visiting sites for extending all cooperation and taking feedback with a positive frame of mind.

and both the auditee and the auditor expressed satisfaction and desire for continuance of the exercise.

Overall, this inter-regional HSE tour was in itself an indicator of the top management’s commitment towards HSE. It also communicated a strong message to all the staff. At the regional level, it offered an opportunity to

evaluate a region with a varied perspective. Project sites have responded positively and this comes as the first direct benefit of the regional heads’ visits. Findings reveal that HSE standards of these sites have improved in response to the visits, including improvements in the labour camps as well. What needs to be done further is maintain the raised HSE standards throughout the project tenure.

In many ways, this ‘Involve to Improve’ concept is envisaged to surely improve the HSE standards of project sites, including contributing to the strengthening of HSE systems across the business

LeAP leaders attend strategic and Tactical pit-stops

Contract management Workshop

LeAP participants attended a three-day intervention programme in Mumbai this December comprising a two-day ‘Strategic Pit-stop’ that unveiled a fusion of two global programmes—‘Why Should Anyone Be Led By You?’ and ‘Helping Others Succeed’—and a one-day ‘Tactical Pit-stop’ covering the finer aspects of ‘Negotiation Skills’.

Why Should Anyone be Led by You? is a potentially life changing programme inspired by the eponymous, award-winning Harvard Business Review article and book authored by Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones. Helping Others Succeed ®

is a systematic, ongoing process of feedback, analysis, planning and action that enables managers to establish and strengthen coaching relationships.

In the ‘pre-work’ stage that preceded the Strategic Pit-Stop, participants were given an online questionnaire. There were three parts to the preparation wherein the participants were able to create their Leadership Profile (a self-view of one’s leadership style and the impressions of those they led); take part in Personal Reflection (identifying personal values that mattered most);

In an attempt to strengthen what has been identified as one of the most critical skills for the organisation, an exclusive one-day workshop on ‘contract management’ was conducted at various regions from October - December 2015. Over 150 participants, including project managers, project coordinators and regional HODs attended the workshop which was facilitated by an experienced IIM faculty. It covered various aspects of managing a contract and included topics like Contract Conditions, Claims, Arbitration, Tort in Construction, Construction Risks, etc. Live examples along with case-studies helped make the concepts easy to understand by the participants. We believe the workshop has not only helped them understand the importance of various clauses in a contract but also appreciate the finer nuances of the contract draft.

Joy of Living Workshop A ‘Joy of Living’ workshop, designed to enable employees learn the fine art of balancing their professional and personal lives was held recently at SP HO. Among the topics covered in the workshop included Working Styles and Effects, Relaxation Techniques, De-stressing, Health and Time Management, etc.

We hope the workshop has made a difference to not only the 130 odd participants who have taken part in it so far, but also positively impacted the lives of those who interact with these participants on a regular basis.

Internal process Workshops Held for alDEpersThe fourth batch of ALDEP, comprising 24 candidates, has undergone a week-long training programme that was aimed at familiarising them with various company processes. Called ‘Internal Process Workshops’, they were held during the third week of December in Mumbai. The sessions were facilitated by senior executives of the company among whom were Sridhar Viswanathan (VP, Hyderabad Region) who spoke on Contract Management; Sarang Tribhuvan (VP–Commercial) who talked about Costing in Construction; Neeraj Kapoor (AVP - Plant & Machinery) who conducted a session on Plant & Machinery; Moosa Khan (DGM – Methods & Planning) who spoke on Formwork Systems; and Sagar Gandhi (DGM - Operation & Technology) who addressed the students on VDC. These apart, a session was conducted on ‘MEP Services’ by external facilitators, constituting modules on topics such as HVAC, Electrical Systems, Plumbing, Fire Fighting and Building Management Systems.

We hope the workshops will help the ALDEPers perform better at the workplace.

‘Executive presentation skills’ Workshop Held for SHIKHAR Participants

‘Health & nutrition Workshop’ Held for Women Employees

With a view to further hone and polish their presentation skills, 30 SHIKHAR participants underwent the Dale Carnegie signature workshop on ‘Executive Presentation Skills’ (EPS) in July 2015 in Mumbai. During the two-day workshop, there were practical sessions on making presentations (whether rehearsed or off-the-cuff). A total of six presentations were held, based on the following modules:1. Creating a great first impression;2. Communicating to inform (facts and data-based

presentations);3. Communicating with greater impact;4. Story telling (incorporating stories to make

presentations better); 5. Preparing for a variety of situations;6. Confrontational questions (how to tackle tough

questions and leave a lasting impression).The participants also received six rounds of one-on-one feedbacks on corrective steps to enhance their presentations.

There is a well-known saying that ‘You Are What You Eat’. We all want to lead healthy lives and develop healthy eating habits. However, our hectic lifestyles leave us with little time to do so. The issue is felt all the more acutely by working women.

As part of the ‘Celebrating Women’ series, 57 women employees from the SP Group underwent a two-hour workshop on ‘Health & Nutrition’ on October 8 at SP Centre, Mumbai.

The workshop was conducted by Ms. Rashida Vandeliwala, the chief counselor and founder of Health Oasis, a Mumbai-based wellness centre that offers diet counseling

The workshop covered various topics such as:1. Combating stress through nutrition;2. Creating hormonal balance through nutrition;3. Creating a balanced meal plan; 4. Healthy packed lunch ideas;5. Healthy eating on the move; 6. Nutrition myths and facts.

It was an engaging session, made livelier by the enthusiastic participation of the attendees. We are sure this will serve as a first step towards promoting better health among our women employees.

SHIKHAR Project Winners

The first two batches of Shapoorji Pallonji SHIKHAR were launched on May 28, 2014 so as to help our existing senior leaders fulfil the future growth needs of the group. One of the important pillars of SP SHIKHAR Programme was the Action Learning Project (ALP) in which participants from different group companies and functions came together and worked jointly.

The ALPs were sponsored by the Group CEOs and were on live business challenges faced by the company. Participants put their skills and experiences together and worked for nine months to deliver solutions.

Every quarter, the Central Program Council (CPC) met and reviewed the progress made by the nine teams.

The third and final review was held at SP Centre, Mumbai, on September 25, where the teams showcased their hard work as well as put forward solutions and recommendations for the ALPs.

In the end, the jury had to struggle to choose between Team ‘EPROM’ and Team ‘Lean Construction’ for the top prize. Ultimately, with nothing to differentiate between the two, they were declared as joint winners.

Project Team ‘Accountability of Group Vendors’ was declared the First Runner-up and the Second Runner-up prize went to Project Team ‘Identify Areas of Business/Markets Where SP Group Can enter/Expand to Reach a Net Margin of Over USD 1 Billion in Next Five Years’.

Workshop on ‘Knowing and Managing Self’

Disha Module 1, a workshop for SP UDAAN 2015 participants, was held in two batches in November and December 2015 at Lonavala. The workshop, titled ‘Knowing and Managing Self’, focused on helping participants understand their thought processes, behaviours and emotions and appreciate the similarities and differences between individuals. The workshop was experiential in nature, combining presentations, videos and activities to drive home and reinforce key messages.

In the ‘Leaders Speak’ session for the first batch, Mr. Ajay Singh, the CEO of Forbes Technosys Ltd., highlighted various parameters of self-management and elaborated them through examples from his personal

As part of the SP UDAAN 2015 programme, a workshop on mentoring was conducted on November 20, 2015. The half-day workshop, specifically intended for the managers of the SP UDAAN participants, was conducted in collaboration with the SP Jain Institute. The workshop focused on making the managers aware about the SP UDAAN programme, including the four pillars of the SP UDAAN journey, viz., Gyaan, Kriya, Sadhana and Sameeksha. The programme also emphasised the role of managers in ensuring the success of the participants.

As part of the programme, we had invited a couple of SP UDAAN participants, one each from the 2013 and 2015 batches. They elaborated on how the programme had helped them develop their personal and professional lives and spoke on the key challenges faced by participants and how their managers could support them. Later, Dr. Ranjan Banerjee, Dean, SP Jain Institute, addressed the audience and spoke about Industry-Academia collaborations.

The programme was co-facilitated by Ms. Daya Sajnani from the Group Centre HR Team and Dr. Renuka Kamath, the chairperson of the Post Gradate Executive Management Programme (PGEMP) of the SP Jain Institute.

How teams can together find solutions to tasks that appear overwhelming to an individual; 2. How questioning our beliefs and learning from the past can ensure continuous innovation; and 3. A leader’s job is to create an environment, where making mistakes and learning from them is part of the culture.

The participants found the workshop insightful and practical and we have received very encouraging feedback on it.

Champions scheme: an sp Quality InitiativeSPCPL has always nurtured an environment conducive to dissemination of knowledge and its application to work. Training employees remains an integral and important step in this endeavour. Hand skills training is one such programme which seeks to improve productivity, controls and the quality of workmanship by augmenting the skills and competency levels of our construction personnel. In this programme, initiated a couple of years ago, construction managers are trained in specific construction activities, with practical demonstrations at project sites; they, in turn, are required to train engineers, supervisors and other personnel in their work areas (as in a ‘train the trainer’ programme).

As an extension of the hand skills training, a champions’ scheme has been introduced this year, its aim being to:1. Recognise skills and competencies of our

construction personnel2. Identify experts and torchbearers for major

construction activities in each region.To this end, a champion is chosen for a designated

construction activity (e.g., floor and wall finishes) after a thorough assessment of the knowledge, capability and commitment of the applicants.

Champions are expected to provide guidance to projects within the region, in their recognised fields of expertise. This would include guidance in setting up right processes, logistics and resources at the start of activity at all projects in the region. Champions are to also visit projects within the region, as directed by the regional head, and help in resolving various queries, issues and complaints regarding executed works, their quality and workmanship, in their identified fields of expertise. In essence, champions are to be prime resource persons for regions. Champions are also expected to conduct hand skills trainings, as and when directed by the regional head.

Efforts put in by the champions will be recognised through certificates and felicitations at the regional annual function. Their contributions will be assessed at the end of the year. The top three champions will be given an opportunity to visit an ongoing project of Shapoorji Pallonji International (SPINT) to study best practices overseas.

In April 2015, applications were invited from construction managers (E Cadre) to identify and select ‘champions’ for ‘Floor & Wall Finishes’, ‘Masonry & Plastering’ and ‘Wall & Ceiling Partitions, Doors & Windows’. The response from the regions was very encouraging and positive. The first stage of assessment involved a preliminary written test and group discussions, conducted by the regional HR & Quality team. This assessment, coupled with the feedback of the regional head, was taken into account in each region

to shortlist and ascertain the eligibility of construction managers for selection as ‘Champions’. An ‘On the Job’ assessment was then conducted by our principal hand skills trainer, Joerg Meyer, which was followed by a written test on each subject. A total of 46 finalists were assessed thoroughly over several months before being selected as ‘Champions’.

For this year, our management has decided to send all champions to an ongoing project site of Shapoorji Pallonji International (SPINT), to study and observe best practises overseas.

After the first round of assessments (over the last few months), the realisation dawned on us that we do not currently have a champion for each activity in every region. But we did realise that we have dedicated employees, who can be groomed and mentored to take up a champion’s mantle. Hence, focussed training programmes have been initiated as a priority. What is now required of all regions is to support and encourage the participants and provide them time to engage in this constructive activity.

All construction managers are also requested to regularly devote time to conduct weekly hand skills sessions for their immediate teams. After all, we are only talking of spending up to three hours per week! And we are convinced that the benefits of such constructive approach would far outweigh the time spent on it.

William Foster once said, “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skilful execution”. Let us, therefore, continue to contribute positively and actively to improve the quality of our works.

The World Quality Day was initiated in 1989 by the Quality Organisations of Europe (EOQ), USA (ASQC) and Japan (JUSE). To make it more effective and functional, The United Nations Organisation floated the idea of ‘World Quality Day’ in the year 1990, with the objective of creating international awareness about quality. This year, the World Quality Day centred around the cocoa industry.

Here’s sharing with you how World Quality Day, 2015 was celebrated in our regional offices across the country.

World Quality Day was celebrated at all our projects sites on November 19, by organising various activities that saw participation from the functional heads, the site teams and workers.

The day started with an inauguration ceremony, together with flag hoisting by respective project managers. This was followed by the following events: • An awareness programme for

workers;• Quality slogan and poster

competitions for workers and staff members;

• A quiz competition for the staff; and• A quiz for workers, ‘Tool Box Talk’,

that went on for seven days.Speeches were also delivered by

World Quality Day was celebrated with great fervour at all project locations of SPCPL, Bengaluru Region on Thursday, November 19, 2015. The event was marked by all-round participation by client representatives, SPCPL project teams, HODs of the Bengaluru RO (at select locations) and the workers.

The celebrations started with a ‘Quality Pledge’ to all stakeholders in Hindi/English. Clients and SPCPL representatives then addressed the gathering and stressed on the importance of quality in construction

We too decided to celebrate World Quality Day (on November 19), our focus being to achieve operational excellence in all activities that we perform, create awareness, applaud and appreciate the quality delivered by our teams at our project/sites and offices.

Even though 2015 was the first time we celebrated the day, the response from our projects sites and offices was overwhelming.

Celebrations broke out all over with hoardings, gatherings, quizzes, quality walks n’ talks, discussions on best practices and sharing of anecdotes and experiences by our senior managers. There was involvement from everyone, the emphasis being to demonstrate commitment, instil quality and place quality above all.

In addition, ‘Best Engineer & Supervisor’ awards, based on the quality of work, were also given out.

World Quality Day was celebrated at various sites of the Chennai region, viz., HLL, RBI-A, BHEL-Neyveli, DLF- Kakkanad, Hexaware, PBEL, Aravind Eye Hospital and IIM-Trichy on November 19, 2015.

The regional QAQC head was present for the quality day celebrations at the PBEL project site. On behalf of the management, he conveyed quality commitments to all the staff. At all project sites, site QAQC in-charges commenced the day by welcoming all the participants and the chief guests. Our clients accepted our invitation and graced their presence as chief guests and shed light on quality. Site QAQC in-charges also put up project quality presentations on important or critical areas and activities, where greater attention is required. They further discussed the correct ways to improve and achieve the quality required.

World Quality Day was celebrated at Bulangir (Orissa site), DRPL (Hyderabad), AIG (Hyderabad), Koraput (Orissa) and the ITC Hotels sites of the Hyderabad region. Posters on quality were displayed at project sites and all necessary arrangements were made at the appointed venue, where our staff members, labourers and sub-contractors gathered for the celebrations. We had invited our client and the PMC.

Observed on November 19, 2015, the day’s programme started with speeches by the project in-charge and the site’s quality in-charge which were followed by a host of other activities like a quiz on ‘Quality’, the ‘Quality’ slogan competition, the best workmanship award and finally the prize distribution ceremony.

This was followed by a speech by the PM/PIC/PD on ‘Motivation and Encouraging Quality’, emphasising the importance of ‘Quality Consciousness’. Senior staff members of sites then shared their views on quality with the other stakeholders and also shared good construction practices to enhance workmanship.

Posters highlighting the importance of quality alertness, provided by regional QA/QC departments, were displayed at prominent locations of the site. Also Tool Box Talk/Pep Talks were held to promote quality consciousness among the workmen and labourers. Quizzes on quality and slogan competitions were also organised by site QA/QC in-charges and prizes distributed to the winners. To conclude, best performers were rewarded so as to encourage them to continue to give their best and middle level performers

The Asansole Hospital project site distributed Quality Day T-shirts among the staffs, to instil the importance of quality at the workplace. World Quality Day was celebrated with gusto on November 19, 2015 at all the sites of the Delhi-1 region. The day was observed as not only an event in itself but also as an opportunity to create awareness and give added momentum and passion to quality amongst the engineers and other staff of the region. Seminars, presentations, quizzes and competitions were organised to emphasise the importance of quality amongst the staff. There was overwhelming participation from clients, consultants and SPCPL staff at various projects which gave the event great momentum.

World Quality Day was celebrated at various project sites of Delhi Zone 2. Staffs from all the project sites were seen to keenly involve themselves with the celebrations. Slogans and posters on quality were put up, banners and hoardings were displayed at project sites and there were presentations on quality by QA/QC engineers, in the presence of our clients. Speeches were delivered by the client, the PICs and seniors on the importance of quality. Engineers involved with various projects addressed the workers how to improve quality.

Our regional head, Mr. Alok Tiwari, focused on prioritising quality and progress to make the company the best in the field. The undersigned emphasised that progress in the desired direction could be achieved if work was done right, at the first instance and together with standard methodology and right material, rather than wasting time and money on reworking at later stages. All project in-charges of respective sites took charge and defined quality in different ways, but with the same goal in mind: achieving cost effectiveness and

saving time. Training workshops were organised for engineers, foremen, carpenters, riggers and masons. Integrated management systems and SPCPL quality processes were highlighted also to create awareness about them on the occasion. Various events and awareness programmes were organised at all 17 project sites by their respective project in-charges. The day was celebrated with great enthusiasm involving clients, PMCs and the SPCPL team. Prizes were distributed to encourage all participants.

World Quality Day was celebrated with enthusiasm in the Pune region in the third week of November. There was participation from the clients, PMCs, our labourers, supervisors and other staff members. Posters on quality were displayed and ‘quality’ themed walks were organised to appreciate good quality and check negativities, if any. In addition, there were quizzes, slogan competitions, speeches on quality, etc., which were followed with distribution

We had embarked upon our SAP implementation journey at SPCPL in January 2014 with the launch of Project BAHAAR (BAHAAR is the acronym for Business Acceleration By Harmonization, Automation And Rationalization).

Mr. Shapoor Mistry, during his inaugural speech (on January 24, 2014), had exhorted the project team to make BAHAAR the best SAP project in India in all respects.

SAP India and INDUS (Indian corporates using the SAP forum) have instituted the ACE award which has been seen as a mark of technological excellence since 2006. SAP ACE has since recognised and honored Indian businesses that have demonstrated the spirit of innovation and leveraged SAP solutions to transform their businesses. SAP ACE continues to keep pace with evolving business and technology landscapes. Integration of the SAP Performance Benchmarking programme in the evaluation process, with independent jury panels, have made ACE the most coveted award in the industry.

We are pleased to inform you that Project BAHAAR has won the prestigious SAP ACE, 2015 Award in the ‘Large and ‘Complex Projects’ category which includes the largest corporate clients of SAP in India. This undoubtedly makes BAHAAR

the best SAP project in 2014-15, across all business segments.

BAHAAR was selected a winner by a panel of eminent industry leaders through an independent but rigorous evaluation process spanning over three months and covering various parameters like Project Methodology, Solution Quality, Business Relevance and Actual Usage.

The project has developed a harmonised SAP template for Engineering and Construction, Real Estate, EPC and CMG businesses, on a single technology platform powered by HANA, the latest and technologically advanced in-memory computing database solution from SAP.

This is a first-of-its-kind project, covering value chains in

Engineering, Construction and Operations (EC&O) domains, on this technology platform. The project has covered more than 180 live projects, 1700 users and millions of records of master data and open items. To support SPCPL’s unique processes and implement all key integrated controls, the team has delivered more than 315 customised developments, all within 11 months of implementation.

annual Day Celebrated at spCpl HoThe Annual Day celebrations of the SPCPL Head Office were held at a gaily lit Radio Club, in Colaba, Mumbai, on the evening of November 20. With the Radio Club perched on a promontory jutting into the Arabian Sea, there couldn’t have been a better location for the celebrations.

The well attended event kicked off with a film celebrating 150 years of the company. This was followed by an inspirational speech by our chairman, Mr. Shapoor Mistry, which he had delivered on August 4, the day of the 150th Year celebrations.

It doesn’t matter whether the jackets on our shoulders are SAFFRON or GREEN, or whether the helmets that protect our heads are WHITE; what really does matter is when people unite under the TRICOLOUR, they can transform the globe.

Being on the land of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a votary of his CLEAN INDIA CAMPAIGN, we the Vadnagar Hospital project team have started cleaning our site all by ourselves.

There is much truth in the saying ‘Charity Begins from Home’. Accordingly, the mass housekeeping team at our site finds itself drawing fresh inspiration from the quotation every Friday.

It all began with a small spark of idea by our project in-charge, Mr. Deepal Vaidya and our HSE officer, Mr. Dipayan Kar, which today has ignited the flame of voluntary service in the minds of the entire staff. We the entire team of Shapoorji Pallonji Engineering & Construction is engaged in this effort to keep our site clean, right from the project in-charge to the workers.

Initially the task seemed challenging for the team, but the inertia vanished as soon as the team got started and then soon after

Healthy living is becoming an increasingly important issue both in society at large and the workplace. In our pursuit to have a healthy workforce, the Eastern region had organised a ‘Health Camp’ in association with Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, at the State Bank Management Institute, Kolkata, on Wednesday, November 4, 2015. The objective of the health camp was to bring about an overall reduction in downtime due to illnesses and thereby boost morale and increase productivity. The camp was attended by 56 employees.

Last but not the least, this clean-up initiative has made every one realise that cleanliness is indeed next to Godliness.

Dialogue in the Dark

Three activities had been planned

1. Coffee in the Dark: We were taken through darkness and made to sit at dining table in a group. Raw material for making tea and coffee were provided. We prepared our own tea/coffee and relished snacks which had been placed on the table beforehand. We had to use our other senses to do these jobs which resulted in maximum team building. It was purely a game of sharing, caring and understanding others’ needs.

2. Exhibition Tour in the Dark: Here, we were taken around a nature trail. There were historical monuments, a market, one could play cricket or work on computer, but every activity had to be accomplished in the darkness. At the market, we had to purchase snacks/beverages just by feeling the currency and receive the exact amount returned by the shopkeeper who too was blind.

3. Taste of Darkness: We were served lunch in total darkness! There were no candles or lights. We had to have lunch right from the soup to the sweet dish in darkness. There were both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, but served separately. A finger bowl was provided too. Everything was served courteously.

We the staff of the Hyderabad RO had organised our employee social at ‘Dialogue in the Dark’. The entire day was spent in darkness! It was the experience of a lifetime and a very different one indeed!

Dialogue in the Dark is a unique and internationally acclaimed exhibition that takes place in complete darkness. It puts us in everyday situations like crossing the road, going to the supermarket, or making tea/coffee, but in complete darkness, awakening the other senses and in the process deepening self-awareness and self-realisation. We were guided by staff who were blind! They took us through an unforgettable journey, opening us up to a completely new way of seeing the world through the faculties of touch, hearing and smell.

In the run-up to the festive season, as always We@SP paused to remember and help the not-so-fortunate. The Joy of Giving Week was back at SP with most group company employees volunteering to extend their support to the underprivileged and contributing towards the cause. Employees and HoDs from different departments opted to chip in by dedicating their time, money and resources—all in a bid to give back to society.

The Joy of Giving Week follows a set procedure, commencing with the announcement of the festival in

The Joy of Giving fest was celebrated across all the regions and by all the sites across Andhra Pradesh/Telengana and Odisha. The staff contributed money, with which items were procured, as per requirement, for the inmates of old-age homes, blind schools, orphanages, etc. The staff participated in all these activities enthusiastically were deeply touched by the overall experience.

A blood donation camp was also arranged on November 28, 2015 at the Pheonix site of the Hyderabad region, where 60 staff members voluntarily donated blood to Red Cross Society. In addition, some of the client’s staff came forward to donate blood as well. The donated blood will be mainly used for children suffering from thalassemia.

An exhibition was hosted so as offer opportunity to various nongovernmental organisations to display their products and craftsmanship. This year, two NGOs took part in the exhibition and the response theirs stalls evinced from the employees was heart-warming. The proceeds of the exhibition will go towards welfare of mentally challenged children and women’s empowerment initiatives.

Apart from this, groups of employees also dedicated a couple of days to visit a centre for slum children, providing the inmates with opportunity to read, learn and understand the moral aspects of good living. The initial shyness of the children soon gave place to whoops of joy and laughter as they started interacting with SP-ites, who, on their part, too joined in with reckless abandon. Games were played, drawing competition held and songs sung, making it an occasion to cherish by all.

sp E&C ahmedabad regionThe Joy of Giving Week, a ‘festival of giving’ was observed across all project sites and regional offices of the Ahmedabad region. The Joy of Giving Week is not merely aimed at inspiring all to give back to society but also to celebrate the concept of giving and derive joy from it. In view of this, staff members donated various items which were distributed among children who are less privileged.

SP RE Kolkata TeamSPRE Kolkata celebrated the Joy of Giving festival by distributing stationary items to around 50 children from Saujatya, a home for destitute and orphan children.

In order to make the event a success, an appeal was made to the employees of SPRE Kolkata to donate whatever stationary items they could, such as pencils, erasers, sharpeners, colour pencils, crayons, drawing books, note books, and so on. The initiative received the wholehearted support of all the employees of SP RE Kolkata RO, the Shukhobrishti and Joyville Howrah sites. The donated items were handed over to the secretary and assistant secretary of Saujatya for distribution to the children.

SP RE Team, PuneA blood donation camp was organised by Team SP RE, Pune to observe the three-day Joy of Giving festival. All the clients were informed beforehand about the event by mail and subsequently reminded over phone. The camp was organsied in association with the Noble Hospital, Magarpatta, and held at the Glass Court in Bld. 2. A team of three doctors, two medical social workers, five nurses and two helping staff were

in attendance throughout the blood donation drive. The Noble Hospital had also organised a well-equipped ambulance, 10 beds and tea and biscuits (for the donors). SPRE had arranged for fruits for all the donors and lunch for all the medical staff.

sp rE - north TeamThe SP RE - North team visited the Desire Society (an NGO for HIV infected children), where besides sweets, chocolates and toys were distributed among the children. In addition, the following items were also donated, as per the requirement of the NGO.1. One stainless steel bowl for fruit and vegetables2. One aluminium kadahi 3. The region’s teams also organised a ‘Diwali Mela’ at SP Infocity, Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon by Prajna Foundation - Koshish. They put up stalls at two locations: one at the reception area and another one at the cafeteria. Further, a second ‘Diwali Mela’ for NGOs was organised at SP Infocity, Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon by India Meets India.

sp E&C Chennai regionWe at Chennai region, in keeping to our chairman’s magnanimous gesture and thoughtfulness, chose to feed the truly deserving and infuse their lives with joy and a sense of caring. The beneficiaries of this laudable gesture were carefully chosen though comprising inmates of old age homes—parents who were once able and loved their children but now have been abandoned. Our HODs and staff members made it a memorable day for them, serving them food (and love) with their own hands.

The next on our list of beneficiaries was Marialaya Home, a home for girl children where they are sheltered and safeguarded them from the wiles of the society. We spent time with them to understand their future aspirations and dreams and came away highly impressed with some of their thoughtful ways and thought processes.

Yet another group with whom we chose to spend time was children of the Arvind Foundation, who are affected with cerebral palsy and are under palliative care. Arvind Foundation was established by parents of a child affected by cerebral palsy. Both being IT engineers have since chosen to devote their time and efforts to help parents with special children, who do not have the necessary economical background to support their intellectual progress. Skillful demonstrations by the children and display of their handwork and craftsmanship gave us joy beyond measure.

Our next was the Voice of Heaven orphanage, where most children are below 10 years of age. They

(the children) came around singing and dancing, their eyes gleaming, searching for a mom or a dad in every face that showed them a little care and concern. The time we spent with these children, who have God as their only parent, was just heavenly; it was like being amidst the fairies and angels of God.

Eureka forbesThe Eureka Forbes team celebrated the Joy of Giving Week with a twist.

It all started on Monday morning with the ‘Wish Tree’ initiative which was brought to us by the Ekam Foundation. A truly unique initiative, a ‘Wish Tree’ was placed at the reception area which displayed a variety of wishes. Our ‘Eurochamps’ had to pick cards and support each wish with nominal donations. The Wish Tree remained in the premises all week and a total sum of R19,100/- was collected through it.

In addition, a first-of-its-kind ‘Master Chef’ contest had been organised at Eureka Forbes, wherein each employee could get food for his/her colleagues in the office. The food had to be enough to serve a minimum of 15 people

and had be segregated into three buckets on the basis of it being a snack, main course or dessert. The response was overwhelming. Each plate was served at a common price of R25/-. We can proudly say that every Eurochamp left the cafeteria with a filled tummy and a big broad smile. Further, a sum of R10,700 was collected by Eurochamps who cooked and sold their food. The entire amount collected was donated to the Ekam Foundation.

The celebrations continued until the internal launch of the Jal Daan campaign which envisages making every Indian pledge to donate 5 litres of healthy drinking water to the more needy.

The total amount donated was R29,800 which made the Joy of Giving Week a truly fruitful one.

FPSO Armada Sterling, which commenced production on April 7, 2013 in the D1 field of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), has successfully completed its fiftieth offtake of crude oil on November 15, 2015.

The offtake commenced on November 13, 2015 in the presence of top ONGC officials which included S. K. Moitra, Asset Manager; P. K. Dileep, Surface Manager; Kalyan K. Roy, Sub-surface Manager; Oliver Bage, Maintenance Manager; and C. Murugadoss, Surface Area Manager. The client was pleased and impressed with the accomplishment of 50 successful offtakes from the D1 field. The asset manager and his team commended the efforts of FBAOL which led the Bassein & Satellite Asset of ONGC to achieve its peak oil production rate in 2015 since the inception of B&S asset.

All ONGC dignitaries and the FBAOL team offered prayers before commencing this fiftieth offtake on November 13, 2015.

FPSO Armada Sterling is the first FPSO working for ONGC. It is located in D1 field, which is 200 km off Mumbai, at a depth of 85–100 metres in the Gulf of Khambhat. The co-ordinates of the location are Latitude: 18º35´17.90” N and Longitude: 71º02´31.89” E.

The most anticipated trip of my life began just two days after my wedding on October 25, 2015. After a lot of netsurfing and networking, we as a couple had zeroed on a trip to Himachal Pradesh to get

away from the hustle and bustle and the humid climate of Mumbai. Finally, we went for a Delhi-Manali-Delhi tour package and decided to explore Shimla on our own.

We took a flight from Mumbai in the afternoon of the 27th and reached Delhi at around 3.00 p.m. We took the metro from the airport to reach Delhi bus stand, where we boarded a bus (a Volvo) for Manali at 5.00 p.m. It took us almost 14 hours to reach Manali. The travel was very pleasant. We had been assigned a car which was a part of the package. The car, an Alto, arrived no sooner than we had reached. The weather was refreshing. The gushing sound of river Beas, the cool wind and the winding roads suffused freshness and calmness that was much required after our big fat Indian wedding.

We reached the Snow Valley Resort, Manali at around 7.00 p.m. Although the check- in time was 12.00, we were alloted the room as soon as we reached. The room and the view it offered were awesome and were just as in the website. The hotel services were prompt and the food simply delicious. The hotel was truly up to the mark and deserved the various certifications of excellence that it had received. After freshening up, we left to explore Manali in the afternoon. The first place that we visited was the famous Hidimba Devi Temple and Gatotkach Shrine. The ancient temple had centuries old stories attached to it. The temple was surrounded by huge and ancient pine trees, a perfect cinematic location. The second temple we were to visit during the day was the historic Manu Temple which again is of great mythological importance. We then went to the clubhouse where we had lunch and proceeded from there to explore the activities and goings on of the clubhouse. The next place to visit was a Buddhist monastery which was in the main market. From there we went to a nearby wildlife sanctuary. After that, we headed back to the resort. The next day started early in the morning when we were to leave

for the much awaited visit to the Rohtang Pass (snow point). After traversing the extreme slope and the wet roads of the ghat for almost two hours, we finally reached the place for which Manali is famous. Surrounded on all sides with snow-capped mountains—the most divine scenery I had ever seen in my life—the song that went playing in my mind was …Yeh haseen wadiyaan, yeh khula aasmaan. Watching and playing with snow for the first time was a whole new experience that I cannot put into words. After playing a lot with the snow and posing for some filmy style photographs, we returned to our car. We then headed to Solang Valley. Unfortunately, it was closed due to certain technical issues, so we explored around a bit and returned to our hotel.

The next day was booked for an adventurous river rafting programme. We set out early next morning after breakfast for the Kullu Manali Emporium to shop for world famous shawls and sweaters. After that, we went down River Beas rafting. With the rafter’s expert guidance, we successfully rowed down the gushing waters of River Beas. This was again a first time experience and it was a divine one too! We felt completely isolated from the chaos of the world, surrounded by tall trees on one side and the lulling music of fast flowing water hitting the rocks. After rafting, it was time for worship. Along the bank of the river was a large Vaishnodevi temple. It is a replica of the original Vaishnodevi in Jammu, the only difference being that it houses many small temples of various Hindu gods and goddesses. After a quick lunch, we headed to Naggar Castle, another major tourist attraction of Kullu. It is an old castle which is now being used as a heritage hotel. With this, our sightseeing for the day was done. The next day was a leisurely day for us—we had a lot of travelling ahead, as we were to leave for Shimla the next day. The stay at Manali was a splendid one with lots of memories packed that we carried back with us.

The following day, November 1, we took a bus from Manali to Shimla—a nine-hour journey and a very tiring one. We checked in at The Snow Valley Resort, Shimla at around 7.00 p.m. After an early dinner, we retired for the night. Eating good food, loitering around and playing chess were

what the day had been about. The day next we chose to go around Shimla and Kufri for sightseeing. The first place we visited was the Jankhu Temple which has a Gigantic Hanuman statue. The view was serene from the top of the temple. The adventure club in Kufri was the next place we visited which offers a variety of adventure sports like bungee jumping, various rides, a horror house—in short a miniature of our very own Essel World, but at an altitude. The view around the top of Kufri was panoramic. Horse-riding was the favourite sport here. The Lalit Café, where we had lunch, was idyllic, situated amidst a small wildlife sanctuary.

The next day was again a leisurely day which we spent packing our bags and lazing around—basically taking in the last of the views of the hill station.

We have made up our minds to visit Manali again for sure, as it definitely is the Queen of Hill stations for us—the place was tranquillity personified’. We took a flight back to Mumbai the next day, November 5, and were thrown back to reality after the dream vacation. There was an added bonus to or trip, as we spotted cricketers Rohit Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the airport and even flew back with them. All in all, it was a happy journey that ended on a happy note.

(P.S: It is not advisable to try chicken dishes in Shimla or Manali, as we were served undercooked meat on two occasions and did not have the courage to try for the third time)

One of the Panchatantra stories is about two friends who were walking through the desert. During the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything he wrote on the sand, “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started to drown, but his friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone, “Today my best friend saved my life.”

His friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now you write on a stone. Why?”

The other friend replied, “When someone hurts us, the winds of forgiveness can blow away the sand and erase the hurt, but when someone does something good for us, no wind can ever erase what is written on a stone.

Learn to write your hurts on the sand and to carve your blessings in stone.
