Tornado Lever 2:Support users’ bi-polar moods
Why does it often fail?

Slide 44
Tornado Lever 3: Push for a Simple Model (1 of 3)
• Customer:– “I need a Knowledge Infrastructure.”
• Technology person:– “No Problem. You need modems, routers.
HTML, ADLS, HDSL, POP, HTTP server, IP addresses …”
• Result:– Confusion.

Tornado Lever 4:Support New Leaders (1 of 2)
Observations:• Leaders work in various ways. (e.g., contribute to mailing
lists; organize various new centers; and bring-in new members.)
• Leaders can be divided into two groups: those who want to advance themselves and those who want to advance the community.
• At times, leaders lack basic skills of organization and management.
• Longer term leaders are hard to find, shorter term leaders come more easily.

Slide 48
Tornado Lever 4:Support New Leaders (2 of 2)
Conclusions:• Leadership takes time; users who lack time are
often prevented from becoming leaders.• Leadership of content is relatively easy (collecting
data and presenting it); leadership of processes is more difficult.
• The new world allows some people to becomes leaders, and prevents others from becoming one.
• The new leadership calls for a different mix of leadership qualities.

Slide 49
Tornado Lever 5: Remember the rise of knowledge management
Data:– Case #1: A bank.– Case #2: Students.– Case #3: My self.
A Sad Conclusion:– People hate to learn.
A Happy Conclusion:– People may prefer to “manage knowledge.”
