They say 'Let the history judge the work of Art'. I am curious to know, who is writing the history & who will be writing history of art?

Ved Nayar, in his creative visual imagery explored number of directions. In the formative years of Indian contemporary art after independence, I feel, Ved was first to begin & evolve number of creative directions now being practiced in Indiancotemporary art. Thought of compiling this book is to register the correct dates of the starting point of these creative visual directions in Contemporary Indian Art .

Expressing in art is an effort for some artists and a simple habit for some.Choosing medium to express is an effort for some artists & an instinctive selection for some. Exploring human form in a conventional way & evolving human form initiatively in a state of creative compulsion.Ved had training to be a painter. To start with, he practiced as a painter for many years to evolve his creative visual expression. Between 1957-70, Ved participated in many group art exhibitions as well as in National Art exhibitions. As soon as Ved completed his art education, his painting was selected in the National exhibition held in Gallery of ModernArt's, Jaipur House. It was the same year K.K.Hebbar's 'Mahim Durgah' got the National Award. Ved tells that he used to go to Jaipur House every day & stand before his painting …. Ved says, perhaps, he was the only admirer of his painting. Ved worked as an exhibition designer for number of years. His experience as an exhibition designer and a short evening course in film making in London changed his perceptions & thought process towards the mediums to achieve creativity. He started exploring & using unconventional matrials to arrive at his creativity ….. the result was the 'Hard Edge' painting series. His 'Hard Edge' paintings were selected & exhibited in International Triennale-India in 1975 &1978. 'Kumar Art Gallery' invited Ved Nayar for a solo exhibion of his 'Hard Edge' paintings in 1975.Around 1976 Ved started evolving 'Human Form' in his drawings as a daily prayer.Ved started indulging in making small sculptures for his creative visual expression around 1977.Ved Nayar discarded the practice of deciding first, how the achieved sculpture will stand or sit before conceiving & making it.Ved concentrated entirely on evolving, feeling & the relationship with the environment of his sculptures. Ved provided environmental placement & balance to his sculptures by providing appropriate pedestals, the way the sculptors of Chola Bronzes provided pedestals to their gods & goddesses in bronze. In the word's of Ved Nayar, 'My art is my personal creative visual expression, with a concern creeping in. Programmed in me, I carry compulsions of my cultural identity. I am an aggregate of my local, regional and global consciousness'.Installation-1: 'Mankind -2180' with a growing 'Paddy Field' as base, as environment concern & as an environmental support & as environment expression in 1982. Installation-2: 'Mankind -2180( An alternative) with a sand field as base, as environment concern warning & as environment expression in 1982.Both, Installation -1, 'Mankind -2180' & Installation -2, 'Mankind -2180(An alternative) were displayed in Triennale- India in 1982 & earned a commendation certificate frm the international jury. There were many eye brows raised, at that time, against 'Installation' as a form of creative expression in art & there were also some eye brows raised for acceptance of 'Installation' as a form of creative expression in art. Ved's small bronze sculptures with large associated other attachments of materials & concerns created difficulties for absorption to some conventional artists of that time. Later, Ved's use of colour pigment as 3 dimentional sculptural form, also created difficulty for acceptance by conventional artists & art writers of that time.Ved's indulgence with the diffident materials in his journey on different roads, paths & pukdandies to reach his creative visual expression made him different from others. The art writers of that time could not find references to fit & explain his works vis-a-vis established norms. He was not only making 3 dimensional works of art, he was adding to them a 4th dimension of thought & feeling. They say 'Let the history judge the work of Art'. I am curious to know, who is writing the history of Art? I felt the need for this book to establish & record sequence & the

dates of creation of the works of art in the contemporary Indian art scenario.'Buried Consciousness'…. Critical interpretation of the multi layers of the Indian Myths. These shaoe, form, concept, & content are expression his art.
