Beauty Culture Training

24 girls received diplomas in Beauty Culture

this year. Their six months training syllabus comprises of threading, bleaching, waxing, facials, manicure, pedicure, head & body massage, bridal make-up, hair cutting/styling and henna application. There continues to be great enthusiasm for this course. The women and their families benefit from their acquired skills besides providing them with an earning from their door to door beauty parlor services.

Jyoti Instructor Beauty Culture Course students

Mehndi Application Course

We also ran a three month Mehndi Application Course which too was very popular. 20 very keen to learn underprivileged girls completed this course. They enjoyed learning the art of applying Mehndi and it also became a mode of generating employment for them during festivals where they were in great demand.

Computer Centre

Our Computer Centre at Govindpuri continues to function despite shortage of resources and second hand computers which often break down and need constant repair. Therefore only the Basic Computer Course can be taught. The course duration is 6 months. 30 students were enrolled this year out of which 16 students successfully completed their course, passed their exams and were given diplomas by the Govt. testing agency – Jan Shiksha Sansthan. We plan to apply for a DAP Grant from the Australian High Commission in the next F/Y for computer infrastructure, in order to meet our target of making at least 200 slum dwellers computer literate annually.

Play/Pre School, Kalkaji

We started a crèche with 20 children in 2007 which gradually grew into a regular Pre/Play School, with the number of children swelling to about 100 this year. Several factors have contributed to this: The School’s proximity to Sudhar Camp Slum which is home to most of the children and the quality of education imparted. The children are admitted to our Play School when they are 3 years old and after spending 4 years with us, they get admission into regular schools. This year 31

students scored Grade A and 7 got admission in regular schools. We are proud of their good performance. We celebrate religious festivals like Diwali, Eid, Gurupurab X’Mas, in the school every year by organising activities and cultural functions on these occasions. The children look forward to this. At the same time we explain to them the importance of diverse cultures and beliefs. National Days are also observed to help children learn about their national history. Picnics and extracurricular activities are also organized.

Play School, Govindpuri

Our Play School at our new Centre in Govindpuri, which caters to 16 slums in and around Govindpuri, enrolled 40 students this year. A big plus point is that the kids can walk down to the School. They enjoy coming here as the School is pleasantly decorated with Chhota Bhim, Jaggu, Choti, etc. They have fun learning through blocks and charts and have lots of toys to play with. Picnics and outings are organized for them.

Primary & Secondary Education

The number of urban slum children sponsored for Primary & Secondary Classes has gone up to 142. Most of the children go to Deepalaya School. Others go to Sanatam Dharam Vidhya Bhavan, Gyan Mandir Public School, Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya and Radico Welfare School in Kalkaji; Sant Nirankari Public School in Govindpuri; Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in C R Park; DTEA in Lodi Road; Aman Bharti Modern School, ST. Soldier Public School and Indraprastha Modern Public School in New Ashok Nagar; Le Apex Model School in Kondli. PSUs like ONGC, PDIL & EIL, State Bank of India, Corporates like IREO and G & D Incorporation and Individuals - Indian Nationals, NRI’s & Foreigners are sponsoring their education. Like preceding years, our students studying in Deepalaya School, Sanatan Dharam Vidhya Bhawan and other schools have done very well in this School Year 2014-15 too. The results of children who have scored high marks are as under:

Shanti Sahyog Tuition Classes

Tuition classes for our sponsored students are held in our Play/Pre School premises from 3 pm to 5 pm daily where they are helped with their homework and prepared for class tests. This is of immense help to the students as their parents being illiterate, they do not get proper guidance at home. Apart from our regular Staff, National Social Service - NSS volunteers from Lady Shree Ram College also help with the tuition classes. We are trying hard to enforce discipline and instill responsibility in our children.

Computer Training Program:

100 women/girls were taught Basic Computer Course and received their certificates after the successful completion of their training from Jan Shiksha Sansthan, Ministry of HRD. Cutting &Tailoring Course:

This is a very popular course for women as this helps them in saving money by stitching their own clothes and is a source of earning by tailoring clothes for others. This year we have trained 100 students who have received their certificates after clearing their final exams conducted by Jan Shikshan Sansthan, HRD Ministry.

Advanced Cutting & Tailoring Course

This year we trained 30 women in our Advanced Cutting & Tailoring Course, funded by NRI’s In Australia. They were all given sewing machines at the end of the course so that they are empowered towards economic independence.

Four Night Shelters (Begharon ka Apna Ghar) Shanti Sahyog continued to run 2 Night Shelters this year at Sant Nagar under the aegis of Delhi Urban Shelter

Improvement Board - DUSIB. In addition we ran 2 more Night Shelters in the winter months at Nehru Place. Each

shelter provides refuge to 50 homeless persons every night–but nearly 70 seek refuge! There are separate shelters

for men and women. The shelters are a great relief for the poor especially in the chilly winters and the monsoon

season. Blankets, mattresses, quilts, first-aid kits, drinking water and toilet facilities are provided.

Public Meeting under SSGRC Awaz Uthao Project

On 24 February 2015 afternoon, a public meeting was organized by SSGRC under Awaz Uthao Project, at Hungama Park, Navjeewan Camp, Govindpuri, Kalkaji, New Delhi. The Chief Guest was Rashmi Singh, Executive Director, Ministry of Child and Women Development. The Guests of Honor were Judge Lovelin of Saket Court, and from Mission Convergence - Pradeep Kumar, Nodal Officer and Nisha Katheria, Project Manager. The pandal was full with about 400 men, women and children which included Collective Members, Stake Holders Committee and Beneficiaries from our catchment areas. Dr Suman Khanna Aggarwal, President, Shanti Sahyog, welcomed the guests and asked the GRC Staff to present bouquets to them. Mrs Kamlesh Prasad, GRC Project Co-ordinator anchored the program. Addressing the gathering, Mrs Rashmi Singh encouraged the women to rise above their myriad daily challenges and work collectively towards providing a safe environment for themselves and other women. Giving the slogan: “Awaz Uthao Hum Ek Hain”, she concluded by saying that the time had come for women to make their voices heard - not individually but in unison because in UNITY is strength. Violence against women is a great challenge today and we have to fight it together. She also assured all help from her South Dist. Dept. in this regard. Judge Lovelin, reminded the women of the laws and mechanisms to deal with women safety. He alerted them that until and unless they come together to address this issue and openly discussed their troubles and shared their experiences, they will not be able to stand up against being exploited. Pradeep Kumar, and Nisha Katheria explained how women should identify men, and youth who can be part of

the collective, conducting safety audits with community members and relevant authorities like the police and transport authorities. Training of both male and female representatives is necessary to monitor the community for cases of violence. The Objective of this Meeting was to reinforce the aim of the Awaz Uthao Project: A purely community led initiative, focusing on attitudinal and behavioral change towards gender issues through community participation, community contribution and community responsiveness. The attempt was to raise awareness

about women rights against violence and women safety through songs like Saath Chahiye and Chain Gharon Ki Duniya Me Milta Nahi and skits by the Collective Group Members. In the end of the session appreciation from the honourable dignitaries boosted the morale of the Shanti Sahyog GRC team. After the meeting, the participants took out a rally starting from Navjeewan Camp, through Bhumiheen Camp, Nehru Camp towards DDA Flats for putla dehan or burning an effigy symbolising violence against women.

Finally we would like to thank our Supporters: Corporates, PSU’s, Govt. Bodies &

Individuals – Indian Nationals, NRI’s & Foreigners
