Northwest of Downtown Houston: A neglected site along Buffalo Bayou re imagined to provide a physical link and much needed services to several adjacent neighborhoods that are rapidly growing. S.P.U.R. is the missing link. Radiating outwards to connect downtown with adjacent districts, providing a unique place along the Bayou where housing, entertainment, public space and employment are provided for a range of demographics. S.P.U.R. is a transferable toolkit - a collection of ecological, economic and social solutions that could be deployed elsewhere along the Bayou.

The school of architecture and landscape architecture (SALA) is growing. Lasserre, the existing building, is outdated, undersized and isolated from the rest of campus. The UBC Ecotone is a place between places. It will demonstrates a richer makeup than either single community on its own. It blends and connects places, knowledge, and people with one another to create a more vibrant , resilient and dynamic learning environment.

designBridge is a student organization committed to providing design and construction services to groups and individuals that would otherwise not be able to afford them. Initially the client asked for a shading devise to help cool their second story offices. The designBridge team identified a need not only for shading but a safer and more welcoming outdoor transition space. The solution provides a functional gathering space, a well defined entry path and honors the memory of loved ones who have been lost to HIV/AIDS

Contaminated water is a problem for over 50% of the world’s population. In many of the locations where this problem persists, housing security is also a concern.TARO Kit is a catalyst, a kit of parts, and a response to the challenge of improving water quality globally. It offers a versatile housing solution for displaced or impoverished people that cleans water through phyto and bioremediation. It can be deployed anywhere a shipping container can go and a wetland can grow.

MODIFIED CONTAINER: SHELTER

OYSTER BEDS: CLEAN PHASE

WETLAND BEDS: CLEAN PHASE

SOLAR PANELS: RENEWABLE ENERGY

Modified shipping containers found in abundance, EMPTY, in ports in numerous first world countries. They are adapted for living using affordable, industrial grade parts, insulated, and finished with durable interior materials, solar panels and cleaning beds are packed inside and the KIT is shipped to its destination worldwide.

Just enough to power lights at night and cook a meal.

Second, WETLAND BEDS, absorb excess nuterients produced as a result of agricul-tural runoff, industrial practices, and human waste. Heavy metals and PCBs not filtered by the oysters will also be absorbed by the wetland plants.

As the TARO kit begins to propagate along the shore it will create a network of floating, constructed wetlands that will increase flood capacity, improve water quality and connect fragmented coastal habitats.

First OYSTERS filter out particu-late matter from the water. These oysters cannot be eaten due to heavy metal accumulation, however the toxins can be elimin-iated through incineration . Oysters are also reef building animals, meaning that these beds will clean water as well as provide habitat for native aquatic animals.
