Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the victory of a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over the mighty forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people in darkness. The miraculous victory - culminating with the dedication of the Sanctuary in Jerusalem and the rekindling of the Menorah which had been desecrated and extinguished by the enemy-has been celebrated annually ever since during these eight days of Chanukah. The lighting of the Chanukah Menorah has also become a symbol of triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness...and of G-d's ever present Miracles. It is a timely and reassuring message, for the forces of darkness are ever present. Moreover, the danger does not come exclusively from outside; it often lurks close to home, in the form of insidious erosion of time-honored values and principles that are at the foundation of any decent human society. Needless to say, darkness is not chased away by brooms and sticks, but by illumination. Our sages said, "A little light expels a lot of darkness."Let us pray that the message of the Chanukah Lights will illuminate the everyday life of everyone personally, and of the society at large, for a brighter life in every respect, both materially and spiritually.Happy Chanukah!

CHINESE CORNERTopic of the month: “I’m Jewish”. 我是犹太人。Wǒ shì Yóu tài rén.

SCORE!!! GOAL!!! The weekly soccer games of the BOYS’ SOCCER LEAGUE

is going strong in its third year. Warm ups, skill practice and challenges are some of the things our kids enjoy each week. And of course, it’s a great time-out for parents too!

Soaking up the sun while hanging out on the field with their friends is not all there is to it. The dedicated coach, Elliot Gerstler, takes their training seriously and even engages the children in games with other teams who are sometimes older in age. And our kids do marvelously! It is one of the highlights of their games.

Jacques Sebban, father of Mikhael who has been wi th the league for t wo year s now, believes this is great exposure for

the children, as they are taught vicariously to learn how to be comfor table with their environment and relate with other kids. Aside from that, it is also a positive way in which children can release all their energy.

But it's not just the kids who are having fun on the f ield. While they are immersed in their game, the parents at the sidelines also enjoy a few hours of relaxed time, chatting and catching up with friends. For Philippe Masliah, father of Alex and Thomas, this is another thing to look forward to. The fact that the league is another opportunity to get together with the Jewish community makes i t a wor thwhile outdoor ac tivit y for the entire family.

Though some parents opt to take a more

a c t i v e r o l e i n t h e l e a g u e , t r a i n i n g a n d coaching the team, the fun element is the same for everyone. Families gather once a week, every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 in the morning at the Shanghai Soccer World, to come together and have a bit of fun under the sun!

To register your son, please contact Elliot Gerstler or Rabbi Shlomo Aouizerat.

feature story

What is Shabbat? It is "an island in time" where tranquility, awareness,

family, Jewish identity, and truly restful sleep abound. "Imagine a day in which the world stands still, a time when you connect to your inner self, your family and G-d." This quote comes from the Chabad Jewish Center of Pudong, and it is a beautiful and accurate description of the Shabbat experience. The amazing part is, it's actually what many people experience Shabbat to be. The experience is special enough that Jewish families are dedicated

to keeping it week after week, and month after month.

Weekly and Monthly

At the Chabad Jewish Center of Pudong, you can find weekly Shabbat services and meals that are open to the public (a reservation in advance is appreciated). The attendees are mostly guests or tourists, singles living in the area, or passers-by in search of that island in time; a place to renew their Jewish

identity at the end of each busy week. At the Pudong Center, they participate in the prayer services and the Shabbat meal that comes afterwards.

But for most of the community, weekly Shabbat is an occasion that is celebrated at home. It is an important time of the week where the family can come together, invite friends over, and share a delicious meal with one another. In part, celebrating the mark where time for work comes to an end and time for true physical, emotional and spiritual rest begins.

Shabbat truly is a lot about family, whether it is your “Shanghai family”, or your biological family, as the Perez family from Pudong would gladly share with you! For Sharon and Reouven Perez, preparation for Shabbat begins as early as Wednesday, when Sharon does all the grocery shopping. Thursday is when most of the cooking is done, and Friday is when the children really know that Shabbat is almost here. It is then that they see Mommy popping in the yummy challah in the oven.

However, as special as the weekly celebration at home already is, there is something else the community members, especially the children, look forward to! This is the Pudong Family Friday Night Service. Once a month, the community gathers to

share their Shabbat experience with one another.

You can say that community is important not only for Shabbat but for Jewish life as a whole. There is a different kind of joy and validation that comes from celebrating something that you hold dear with others who feel the same way as you do. It is also as a community, that children learn about what it means to be Jewish. Not necessarily through formal teaching alone, but more importantly through example, through what they see happening around them.

For the Perez family, as well as the other families in the community, these are the more important reasons why they continue to look forward to the Family Friday Night services. It is not only a social event, it is a time to uphold why they love Shabbat, together as a community.

Community Shabbat is Fun

The Rabbi and his wife ensure that the community is always actively involved in each weekly and monthly Shabbat service. Last year, each

monthly Family Friday Night service had a special theme of food hailing from different locales. Members were encouraged to volunteer and take care of the Friday night meal, introducing to the rest of the community special Shabbat recipes they have from back home. Each month was a festival for the taste buds that everyone still fondly recalls.

This year the theme of "Jewish Super Heroes" is making the children especially happy. Children services are centered on a Jewish Super Hero. Stories and activities are prepared to keep the children entertained and excited to come back next time when they will know more about King David or Joseph with the colorful coat.

I Love Shabbat

There are a handful of reasons why Shabbat in general, and the Family Friday Night service in particular, is cherished by the community in Chabad Pudong. As Sharon puts it, "I love Shabbat because it is a time for family, whether you have one or not." And that family can be your relatives or the community in which you belong.

I love Shabbat...because it is a timefor family, whether you have one or not.

Every day at Ohel Moshe Synagogue, home of the Shanghai Jewish

Refugees Museum, I discover something different, whether it’s the way the light slants in through the windows in the morning, or how the acoustics are different at various times of day. It certainly is a privilege to work in an old building, especially one that has so many historical layers.

Yesterday, I ventured onto the third floor to do some exploring. The third floor, in its current reincarnation, is host to a temporary art exhibition. The artwork was donated by artists from Toronto, Canada about two years ago. The theme of the exhibition is to represent the historical friendship between the Chinese and the Jewish people. Many of the pieces use

Chinese materials with Jewish patterns or concepts, while others merge symbols from the two cultures to symbolize their shared history and similarities.

The exhibition as a whole truly manifests the theme. It is evident how each artist

approached the theme in his or her own creative and individual way. The artists are Jewish and Chinese, sometimes collaborating with each other to produce a common piece that represents both cultures. Other times, the piece reflects an individual artists’ world view.

There are plans to change the exhibition early next year. So take advantage of the winter months, get a tour at Ohel Moshe, and spend some time with Chinese-Jewish art.
