When exploring the road safety issue in Shanghai, we noticed that there were lots of cars stay in front of the school gate when the school day started or ended, and parents were dropping off or picking up their kids. The hugh amount of cars caused the blocking of the street. With so many cars and parents keep crushing in front of school gate, are there any potential safety hazard? That's how we start our project.

Based on our observation, we design a questionnaire to investigate the road safety from children’s perspectives. Fifty five students participate in this survey. We highly appreciate their cooperation,

Results and Analysis 1/3

Among the students, most students come to school with their classmates. They normally choose to take subway or take the school bus to school. The survey results show that many students do not have the awareness of road safety. Although the transportation they choose is relatively safe, the awareness of road safety cannot be ignored. Schools should enhance the corresponding education.

Results and Analysis (2/3)

Based on their observation, most of students choose school bus as the safest transportation. In China, most school buses have been changed since there were some serious school bus accidents in the past. Nowadays, school bus is a good choice. Children’s behaviors are normally shaped by their parents. Most of students will choose to stop their parents when their parents try to break the law. Especially, some students indicate that their parents never break traffic rules. Some parents really build models for their children.

Results and Analysis (3/3)

The aim of this part of survey is to explore students’ inappropriate behaviors on their ways to school. There still is a portion of students who listen to MP3 or play their cellphones on their ways to school. These behaviors are very dangerous. It will not only cause road safety problems, but also lead to other problems, like it is much easier for thieves to steal things. Students should pay attention to these behaviors.

Conclusion from the Questionnaire

• Not all the students were picked up/dropped off by their grandparents. In our survey results, it’s 0%. Maybe because we are the international school, but the results do explain we were wrong.

• Seldom students would choose bicycle as their transportation to school. In our survey results, it’s 2%. Maybe because they are in Middle School, but the results also explained something.

• It’s good to know that 81% of Middles School students would stop their parents are trying to break the rules, while 81% would prefer not to stop the strangers who are trying to break the traffic rules. Because we could choose to influent the adults by educating their children.

• Over half (60%) of the students would listen to the MP3 on the way on and off the school, while almost half (45%) of the students would play cellphone on their way.

• 13% of they students were hurt by traffic accidents, which proves accidents do happen around our community.

Interview (Further information by traffic coordinator):•Elementary school students are difficult to control when they try to cross the street because they are little kids and they always want to follow their own rules.•Most of the parents who take their kids to school by car also don’t follow or listen to my instruction. There are mainly two reasons, one is that they are too far away from me so it’s useless even I try to stop him. Second one is that they don’t want to follow my instructions, they just want convenience.•Middle school and elementary school students rarely look at their phones when they cross the street or ride their bicycles. (According to what I see in lunch time everyday.) But there are always some students (not from fudan school) look at their phones when they are riding bicycles.

Analysis of the Interview Results

According to the information we got from the two kinds of interviews:•The main safety problem is that some parents never listen to guards' instructions to park their cars. Even there is no accident because of this, some frictions between parents and other parents happen sometimes.(Most of parents use cars to take their children to school and most of middle-age parents don’t listen to the guards.)•Most students cross the street by walking through zebra marking lines. There are some students like to hold their phones when they are crossing the street and riding bicycles.

• When we observed the street in front of our school, we noticed university students who look at their phones when they ride their bicycles and those parents or grandparents who send their children to their schools by either car or bicycle.

• It was not only those university undergraduates who look at phone while they ride on vehicle, but also those parents and grandparents of elementary school students. Considering the road safety and the lives of students, we needed to convince not only those parents and university students, but also those innocent children to stop using phones while they drive their cars or ride bicycles. Children must not be misguided with wrong education on road safety.

• A paper book or paper story is a good and appropriate medium that we can use to convince children of right way of using phones. Our targets are not only the parents and university students. A story with pictures ill interest and attract children and those elementary school students who are allowed to use smartphoens nowadays.

• Admonishing children of the use of phone while driving a car, we can let them reflect upon the behavior and actions of their parents who drive cars to send their children. We hope young kids can understand the consequence of using phones on traffic road and tell their parents about when they can use phones and when should not.

Video Game (Going to School)By Kelsey Hu

• Going to School is a puzzle game operating on IOS platform. It basically requires players to correct characters' bad habbits on thier way to school and make them arrive at school safely. The level of difficulty is low in this game.

• The game is primarily designed for teenagers to prevent behaviors that could lead to great damage and be aware of potential road satety issues. The full game is planned to come out this summer.

Report on WeChat Public Platform

On May 12, 2015, we use the WeChat Public Platform to release a report written by Yaomin Peng in Chinese.

151 people reads it and 7 people praised it (Which can only be seen on Cellphone). Although they are not big numbers, all the members of the Group are excited.

To be continued in future

• We can suggest:– Schools could design special courses to improve students’ awareness of road safety or

held lectures for parents to stimulate their awareness of road safety. By changing parents’ behaviors, students’ behaviors may change as well.

– Schools invite traffic policemen to have a lecture to educate those children and improve parents's awarness by encouraging students to correct their parents' mistakes.

• We can hold:– Poster design competition within the school (Theme: Do not listen to music when people

are walking, especially students)– Posting poster campaign in the community of students they live, to improve peopl

e's awarness of the endanger of playing phones while crossing the street or riding bicycles.• We can continue:

– With more paper stories about traffic safety issue to educate little children.– With full version of video games of “Going to School”.
