The RWM on 28th September, was an informative session by Dr. Arnab Gupta - Director & Professor, Dept of Surgical Oncology, Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute, Thakurpukur, Kolkata. Through an excellent presentation, Dr Gupta not only shared some alarming facts about cancer but also emphasised that cancer is curable if timely detected. Facts show that cancer is on a rise in India - this deadly disease may probably affect 1 in every 8 persons. Indians seem to be aping the western countries and this lifestyle change, is one of the reasons for the increasing cancer patients in the country. However, the biggest cause of cancer is smoking. Dr Gupta informed us that there are 4000+ compounds (including nicotine) in a single cigarette which are the cause of cancer. Among women, breast cancer is common can be treated by early diagnosis and a vaccine can prevent cervical cancer if administered timely.Dr Gupta shared details about Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute - which was built by his father. The hospital is doing a lot of research on cancer and is giving special care to child patients - they have a toy train on the premises and a beautiful play area too. If was heartening to hear that Kolkata has an advanced yet affordable medical facility with state-of-the art machines for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.Dr Gupta ended the session with a couple of songs - on the members' request. Blessed with a melodious voice, he kept the listeners enthralled! It was a great RWM - a very informative and eye opening session. We also celebrated our Secretary Rtn Pranay Agarwal and Editor Mrs Nisha Padia’s birthdays which were in the same week.
